and we picked the wrong ones.

kinda simple really isnt it

mate..is a bit like the first 5 rows of a grand prix.. there may be a second between 1st and 10th. its not much and it can be invalidated in the first 500m

The draft is often mocked as just this side of a lottery for good reason. Roos reckons its worth even less.

So much is seemingly placed into this somewhat subjective contrivance and history suggests youd be better off throwing darts at a board.

The point is the club picked the wrong kid. It's criteria was obviously flawed. ( but hey nothing new there )

These experts proved again they are very good at getting much wrong but for reasons unknown many then use their subjective ideas as testament to why certain blokes went at this pick or that.

It can't just be luck that we took all the wrong picks.

There are without doubt kids who are better than others but its more like theres 10 A' a dozen B's and the rest. Lots of journos are getting paid for making shlt up Id suggest

and we picked the wrong ones.

And you missed the whole point of the post.

I quote from the Steven King film Christine " you can't polish a turd" and our club for many years has been one steaming pile.

I need to confess something, please don't laugh!!!

I'm good mates with Ollies father Tony, at the time we were a shoe in to pick up Ollie before Toumpas slid and Ollie really wanted to play at the Dees.

But the worst thing, based on the information above, I bought two border collie pups, called one Jack - after Viney & yep, the other Ollie... still got Ollie but it'll haunt me forever and Port fans think its hilarious! Why MFC why!!

Ouch.

So basically you have a constant, daily reminder of it.

Unwise my friend. You are in a safe place here.

You got an amusing story out of it. There are worse names for a dog than Ollie.

Just be glad we weren't in the frame to draft Kamdyn McIntosh. That would take some explaining

Fantastic intro to this thread and crying image adds to the effect.

I can cope with Gysberts, Cook because basically we got the players we wanted (albeit not up to it) and did not appear influenced by outside factors.

I can also cope with Scully and Trengove because we got great compo for Sculls and I still have some hope for Trengove - provided he employs a sprints coach off-season.

But the two most damaging choices in the past 10 years are doubtless the change of heart non-decisions - Nic Nat and Wines.

Nic Nat would have been the most marketable icon we could ever have taken - he would have been our Richo. Jim Stynes was keen on him and so were we we, all season, until JW took a mark to win the U18 champs and tested so well that we switched tack. I would love to have been a fly on the wall at the draft meeting where our wise guys swapped - my belief is that Prendergast pushed for it, but I'd love someone to confirm that.

Then we were into Wines and loved his ethic and altered because everyone seemed to be rating JT higher and he was an outside player that we also needed and Neeld wanted. Todd Viney was overruled and the rest is now history.

The moral of the story is go for the player who you like - it's a lot easier to rationalise if it doesn't work out.

Hey dont complain we have a lot to thank those in Power at the MFC for

For instance if they [censored] up again on any Draft Selection just think we can clearly say, why dont you " get us another Wine this time"

'It has some sobering connotations

It what most of us would like when watching how our Draft selections unfold anyway

Why couldn't you change the story to "fearless pig dogs" instead of Border Collies. Would've had a better ring to it.. :(

Poor game from Ollie. Same from Chad except for last 10 minutes. Westhoff disposal poor. Polec scared could have kicked 4 goals in the first. Cornes disposal very poor.

I thought the Toumpas vs Wines debates were just parodying the ridiculous nature of judging a kid before he matures.

Now it seems that they're authentic.

First post on this topic and I pigeon hole this sad episode to the era in the recent past where every recruiting gambit was a [censored] up on top of [censored] up. I hope since Roos has come it it wont happen again. Last seasons recruiting was very encouraging. I hope the line in the sand is permanent.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
