James Gwilt

He'd be an upgrade on Terlich but I think you have to be naturally wary of a player who gets delisted by the wooden spooners. My recent recollection of him is as a bomb it forward type. We desperately need some composure down back so that search would continue.

Collected a few comments by Saints fans to throw into the mix. Seems to be a recurring theme re his knee injury. Be your own judge:

"Youd think Gwilty might get a trade bite."

"Gwilt busted his guts for years. I think he will be at the Crows next year"

"Circumstance dictated that Gwilt had to play as an undersized FB, in his later years a role that he was not cut out for due to his lack of height. A good player before his knee injuries, a lovely kick in his prime and someone who never seemed to drop his head considering the crappy roles he had to fulfill."

"And Gwilty, I think his career could've been something much bigger then what it was, when Goddard left I thought he'd become our go to man as an avenue out of defense but then had to play as an undersized KPD because of our depleted KPD stocks for years."

"Was amazing until the knee injury occurred and seemed to rob him of his agility and power."

"Gwilt is the most likely to be picked up by another club given his age and versatility."

"Leading up to him doing his knee, Gwilt was becoming one of our most damaging players. It's a shame he hasn't gotten back to that form, and that he was mostly made to play out of position for the last couple of years."

"Jimmy Gwilt, my favourite player. Ultimately could only be considered a solid player but his 2010/2011 (before knee reco ) he was very very good. Anyone who disagrees go and watch the 2010 finals series. Minimum of fuss and did it against the odds. Really great kick? Sadly, hasn't been the same player since he injured his knee and it's been hard to watch him as as shadow of the player he was. All the best gwilty."

(A lot of comments along the lines of "almost a premiership player" and "but for a bad bounce would've had a flag". Poor buggers. So close yet so far and it still haunts them)

Out Clisby in Gwilt via PSD. That's a win for mine if that occurs.

Delisted FA, mate.

Save the PSD pick for someone who doesn't qualify for FA and won't be delisted.

I'll put a little caveat to this by saying that I've not seen Gwilt play that much.
But I happened to be tuning into St Kilda last game of the year against Adelaide.
Gwilt did 2 egregiously bad turnovers in a row which led directly to goals going the other way. Jack Grimes-esque.
Really don't know how much this guy will improve our team.

If we take him as a delisted FA it will dilute our Frawley compensation presumably

That's what I was presuming. We'd be better off offering a low value pick than attain Gwilt via free agency. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Please god no! I would much prefer georgiou

Correction: delisted FA would not affect frawley compo

Bit of a shame, he met with Roos a few times so I'm guessing there was interest there.

Guess the Bombers have run out of players to bring in except delisted ones from the wooden spooners.

Guessing the bumblers gave him more years and more cash too. A ss covering time.

Plugging up gaps ( soon to be gaps !! ) cant say its silly.

As I said in the original James Gwilt thread, I've liked him as a defender for quite a few years.

Would be very happy to acquire both of Gwilt & O'Brien to play on opposite HBFs.

Agree, mate. I think they're better options than Howe, Terlich and/or Grimes off HB. Incidentally, I don't see there being a spot for Howe next year. It'll be interesting to see if they put him up for trade.

Yeah, I'm not sure.

I think Roos will keep him, but I don't really know what Howe's currency is like.

He's well-known for his aerial acrobatics, but his value as a player..?

If we could get something really good for him, I'd make the move.

I'm just not certain that's the case.

We would be silly to trade howe. a little off thread topic, just replying to those last few posts.

Howe is one of the best defensive intercept marks in the game.

His leap allows that extra hang time that works a treat in the back line.

He also has a keen goal sense. The guy has tremendous upside.

Jezza shouldn't be going anywhere.

I don't understand the hate on Howe from Demonland posters. He's an amazing mark of the ball, decent kick with a turn of speed - he does need to take a second after he marks before giving it off but he's genuinely talented.

Howe is not a decent kick, he's bloody awful!

I agree and you're probably right about the lack of currency.

IMO, he's an average to ordinary kick when coupled with his decision making. He also offers very little beside marking prowess, which is undoubted. I wouldn't say he's quick either. He's an upgrade on Grimes or Terlich, but that's not saying much.

I think Howe would be a good fit for Sydney. They love that kind of flash

Pick 12 and Howe for Mitchell

lol essendrug

in other words, no other team wanted him

IF going really cheaply, Gwilt could be a handy pick up and would fit quite easily into our existing back half, but IMVHO he is not worth any sort of high pick.

It's always funny when people clearly haven't read the thread.

At the very least, people, skim over the last page before posting. It really doesn't take long.

There's another a bullet we have dodged. I'd rather have brought Cheney back.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
