A good article about Jack - Former No.1 draft pick Jack Watts ready to step up under Melbourne Demons coach Paul Roos

I think playing on wing and Roos as coach is going to make the difference with him.

Only ten bucks? What a cheapo!

In all seriousness, good luck to him. I'm glad he stayed, and I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do under a coach he likes.

Me too. I've always really liked Watts.

I still think he'll prove to be a much better pick for us than Nik Nat. Over the entire journey, that is.

id be interested to see the game time stat from Watts on the weekend, i feel like he played only just over 50% of the game and had 22 touches.

I very much like how the idea is to get the ball to him as much as possible, i wouldnt be surprised to see him get tagged throughout the year due to the quality of his disposal. The thing i was most impressed with was his determination to try and get the football, especially in the first quarter, he was diving in for the footy a couple times and had a want that i had not seen from him before

22 possesions is not a bad start for someome playing his first game as a midfielder.

He didn't really play much in the second term, and wasn't great early on in the third, but his first and last were very solid.

It wasn't just the 22 possessions, it was the 8 marks. He ran to present time and time again.

I think we put a lot of pressure on these young guys and tend to forget that there only humans.

That story about the little girl is pretty cute, I'm glad he stayed.

I hope the same girl writes a letter to chippa with the same effect, seriously though, i reckon Wattsy is ready to explode and show everyone why we took him ahead of Nic Nat, 22 touches for Wattsy is worth 32 from any other player on our list besides Vince

I'm already drafting it

very good, might get my nephew to draw something in crayons, he is a hawthorn supporter so it might do more harm than good

Nic Nat averages about 11 possession per game. With lower effective disposal %. He looks flash but it is fools gold. If it were my choice today I would still pick Jack Watts. At the end of their careers he will be seen as the better player. PS. NN said he would go home after the first contract anyway.

Yeah i would certainly prefer to have Wattsy, even if he doesn't improve we know we have a bloke with elite disposal who can play forward, midfield, back, ruck all at a solid B grade level, most certainly in our best 22 and mountains of room to improve at just 22 years of age.

Watts is also a year younger than NicNat.

No sarcastic comment yet? I can do it this time.

Ahem.

Gee...just what we need, another Watts thread.

Okay, now we can move on.

Good luck to Wattsy this year. The new role is going to do wonders for him. Very happy he has stayed.

Watts only 22 big tall kid yet to fill out ,got lots of abilty will be an absulute champ still think center half back will be his spot in the future.just like hardeman run fast kick long with skill.

and by the way stuff nic nat the one year wonder

I know he had to get fit, that's priority one to play in the midfield. And of course he'll be mainly an outside player. But Watts looked very thin up against the Geelong guys. Stevie J's quads are double the size of Watts'.

But he's been at the club for years now so his body can't be an excuse.

But he's tall and black and sleek looking, like a PANTHER!!!

So, who plagiarised the Chris Grant story? Jack Watts or the Melbourne PR department? Mind you, if he plays as many games as Grant and of the same quality, I'll be very happy.

(If you don't know what I'm talking about, read here - para 7)

Do you criticize Robert Murphy for the same thing?

Honestly are we really reduced to comparing the size of his quads to someone with a completely different build.

I bet there are stories like that from sportsmen all around the world. I reckon at least half of them are true.

He lacks so much physicality around the ball.

Imagine him in a cut-throat final at the G. He'll hardly get a kick.

I know he's precious to many of you, so here's hoping...

Bob Murphy's play does the talking and he's never backed out of a contest or had trouble laying tackles.

Let's just see with Watts. I'm still expecting plenty more growing pains based on his first hit out. He's not an elite runner and he's not a solid build. Ok he's tall and fast which is nice but in itself doesn't give him a huge advantage.

There's a lot of things to recruiting like character, leadership and personality. But probably the 3 biggest things for the best footballers are:

- Athletic talents

- Hunger for the contest

- Skills

I'd give Watts 5/10 athletically. He has to build his tank and add some muscle whilst keeping speed to be higher than that. I'd give his hunger for the contest about a 3/10 and his skills an 8/10.

Jack's move to the midfield is about utilising his skills and given his pace and skill an opportunity to shine. But he's still not an amazing athlete and his one preseason game showed that he was working hard to get the ball but had work to do at contests still.

Everyone expects him to go from an unreliable forward or defender to quality midfielder. It's not going to happen over night.

He is a ruck man and they peak much later than other positions.

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.

  • CASEY: Sandringham

The Casey Demons rebounded from a sluggish start to manufacture a decisive win against Sandringham in the final showdown, culminating a quarter century of intense rivalry between the fluctuating alignments of teams affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and St Kilda, as the Saints and the Zebras prepare to forge independent paths in 2026. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, the Demons went on a goal kicking rampage instigated by the winning ruck combination of Tom Campbell with 26 hitouts, 26 disposals and 13 clearances and his apprentice Will Verrall who contributed 20 hitouts. This gave first use of the ball to the likes of Jack Billings, Bayley Laurie, Riley Bonner and Koltyn Tholstrup who was impressive early. By the first break they had added seven goals and took a strong grip on the game. The Demons were well served up forward early by Mitch Hardie and, as the game progressed, Harry Sharp proved a menace with a five goal performance. Emerging young forwards Matthew Jefferson and Luker Kentfield kicked two each but the former let himself down with some poor kicking for goal.
Young draft talent Will Duursma showed the depth of his talent and looks well out of reach for Melbourne this year. Kalani White was used sparingly and had a brief but uneventful stint in the ruck.

The Demons return to the scene of the crime on Saturday to face the wooden spooners the Eagles at the Docklands. Who comes in and who goes out? Like moving deck chairs on the Titanic.
