Vacant Player Numbers

I strongly disagree

If numbers meant nothing then why would Grimes wear 31 , Watts wear 4 , Trengove 9 and so on

You might not think so but the Club obviously does

17 at the Tigers

3 at the Dogs

14 at the Swans

5 at the Cats

4 at the Saints

23 at the Hawks

Club history is really important

That was under the Schwab regime.

History is out of date under this regime.

They think of the Now and the future

Bernie Vince #12, Dom Tyson #3, Viv Michie #23, take #33 off Dom Barry and give him #36 (give it too the next big indigenous player), give #28 to Daniel Cross, Pick 9 (hopefully Nathan Freeman or Dom Sheed) #18.

33 was the wiz, Barry can keep it

Dom Tyson will probably stick with 29.

Dom Tyson will probably stick with 29.

That would be good. See if he can match Hassa Mann's achievements in the same number.

No pressure !!

Number 30 should be retired out of respect for club champions Simon Godfrey, Tom McNamara and James Seller

I accept that club history is important. But each of the above numbers became famous because of the player(s) who wore the number at the time. I'd like to see our players create their own history. So far we (arguably) have 31, 9, 2 and 11 accepted as numbers of historical value. I'd like to see more numbers valued in the same way by current players making a name for themselves in whatever number they are randomly given. I'd be just as delighted if Jack Viney could make No 7 famous for all time as Jack Fitzpatrick in No 48.

In short, I'd like to see players given one number for their whole Demon career; and I'd like new players not to be burdened by the expectation which comes with wearing a legend's former number.

Only my view but honestly I have little to no interest in what number a player wears.

Just play well and win some games they can wear 24.5 for all I care

I'd like to see a player buck the trend and ask for a high number....say 71....or failing that, maybe 127....low numbers are so passé.

Love it Bingo what about 99?

I will donate $100 to the player who wears 99 for all of 2014

I think #3 for Dom would be a nice little bit of synergy in the Garry Lyon coached him a Jnr..

or maybe throw a decimal point in there somewhere

how about Michie to have 2.1 in hope that he becomes the next Nathan jones?

i have a vague recollection that the AFL imposed some draconian rule about numbers having to remain low (ie, below about 55) after Robert Mace wore 60 for a while.

For the people that like this thread that would mean he is already an improvement on Nathan Jones.

OMG!

Loosen up dude, just a thought, no need to be over the top with the Dramatics.

Why is it I find that easy to believe

That'd be great if it was the case

I've still got 24 from LJ on the back of my guernsey. Hope whoever gets the number gets a game, dunno how you get a number off a silky jumper

Why do they even need numbers? Why not just put the player's name on their back and be done with it... easier for commentators too (well, the those of them that can read).

Club help the boys decide. Club doesn't tell boys. Fans ok with that.

3 Cross

16 Grimes

18 Vince

23 Michie

29 Tyson

30 Matt Jones

31 Terlich

Draftees to fill the numbers from the lowest up.

Why take Grimes number off him?

Three problems with this suggestion:

Can get a bit hard with players with the same name. And before someone says "just add their first initial", how would you separately identify Gerard and Greg Healy?

Can also be difficult for long names such as Cockatoo-Collins.

My eyes (numbers can be hard enough!)

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
