Jackson is his superior. He reports directly to him about what is happening in the football department.

Then like any manager in a talent field he is in charge of administration in this case of the football department and oversees recruiting, list management, sports science etc. He's the go to man regarding organising the department and organising where the money goes. I'd say Viney as head of player development, Roos as an experienced senior coach and Jason Taylor as head recruiter are specifically involved in list management decisions but Mahoney would oversee the money aspects and contracts.

Already he has signed up Watts, Gawn and Fitzpatrick.

Personally I like the move of not overspending for a Walsh or otherwise for this position. Roos as the senior coach doesn't need someone to get in his way, he just needs sound people in list management and recruiting and we've got them in Viney and Taylor. After that we need a capable administrator to be Peter Jackson's deputy and it seems Mahoney has proven he can do it.

Wow.

People in jobs they are suited for. With clearly delineated responsibilities. Newbies being supported by experienced heads.

This must be that professionalism thing other clubs talk about...

Roos has said that once his successor takes over, that he would move into a "Director of Coaching" role, and I'm guessing will still report to the CEO with the senior coach reporting to Roos.

I imagine he sees this as being the natural evolution of a football dept, much like a "Manager" in EPL.

Just my opinion.

Sounds as if the experience requirement of the role was downgraded after luring Roos. Lucky break for Mahoney as it means his relative inexperience counted against him less than it may have otherwise. To draw a footy analogy, he's a top 10 draft pick rather than an established star and he's being given a chance to shine.

Depends what you mean by "experience". Josh has the "experience" of actually working at the MFC for a number of years whereas an outsider with experience in football operations does not. Keeping on someone who has MFC experience to assist a new coach who has come from outside seems sensible to me. Only, of course, if he has the capability to do the job, which I assume Peter Jackson believes he has.

Yes.

GMFO & DOC, similar to how it set up now once the senior assistant is in place.

In fact, pretty much identical, except the SA will officially be the HC.

And perhaps, as you speculate, the current HC moves into the DOC position. I'd certainly go for that. Anything to keep Roos around for as long as possible.

If Roos stays he certainly wont take over Mahoney's role. Mahoney is an administrator. Sure he has to have football knowledge to the do the job but the best way of looking at his role now is CEO of the footy department. And he manages all his sub departments like recruiting, list management, sports science. Except he doesn't have extensive managment of the coaching and development because Roos has far great expertise there.

So if Roos does stay in then yes I expect it to be a director of coaching role which will see him continue to provide leadership and insight to all the coaches.

Most clubs are now heading away from hiring a coach as their director of footy ops and hiring a person with administrative skills. Such as Dan Richardson who seems to have done a wonderful job calling Dustin Martin's bluff at Richmond.

I was wondering if anyone who has the facts and the skills could draw up one of those (?algorithm type, if that is the word) trees showing our club management current structure, and the gaps.

I am sure the role of some of these positions and where they fit in are a bit of a mystery to many of us plebs.

    Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze.     With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals.
