Sydney chairman Richard Colless slams Paul Roos for trying to lure emerging Swans prospects

Featured Replies

The Paul Roos curse struck its first victim tonight way out in Subiaco.

In future Mr. Colless, don't interfere with our business or the karma bus will get you every time.

Didnt Colless retire from his position? threatening legal action when he isn't part of the club.... or very soon will not be smacks a little of Kennett IMO. Can't really bear to be out of the spotlight.

Colless has been a great chairman for the Swans but like Kennett is a blowhard and needs the attention on him. When will these types learn to retire gracefully?

Richard - you have done a belter of a job with Sydney now shut up and stay out of MFC business. Paul Roos has every right to go his hardest for his new employer and he is paid very good money to do so and the MFC is entitled to PR doing everything in his power to improve this club.

Lately there are too many AFL Club Presidents having too much to say about the MFC.

Go Dees.

i think it would be fair to say that one " g healy " was worth an extra goal or 2 in that prelim in 87..

would fate creep in & save all the angst on jimmy.??

I'm fairly certain anyone is/was able to sign up NSW scholarship kids as part of growing the game in NSW. Collingwood grabbed their next ruck Witts that way. Same as taking overseas guys - we have a New Zealand lad this year. Unfortunately for us our resources, recruiting and development haven't warranted one up until now. There will probably be more for us now with Roos on board (and ???? Stone as well)

I've posted a couple of times on other threads that George Stone IS coming to the Dees, and now their season is dusted, I imagine it will be announced in the near future. Can't reveal source due to confidentiality.

cant wait to hear Colless cry like a [censored] when we officially announce George Stone to the MFC

Forehead plus the letter L

Which players on Sydney's list have alreday come from this academy?

I believe Craig Bird is one.

A notice to Colless and all his ilk. We are no longer anyone's whipping boy. In fact we now have a rather handy whip of our own and intend on using it.

Get used to it !

This guy is a drip stop complaining.... In business people move jobs for new challangers & more money etc

The good organizations & footy clubs will always find good replacements & ensure their internal development culture see people develope to move into these vacant roles.

Geelong lost Hinkley,Sanderson to other clubs & Costa was rapt he is part of a club that has developed senior coaches.

He's already well aware it is coming.

That was a carefully timed pre-emotive strike.

Now when it happens he says "see? It was already bad enough, and now this!"

Just add a bit of perceived credence to his claim.

Good for you Dicky, good for you.

The reality is that George Stone lives in Melbourne, and travels weekly to Sydney. He's been doing this since 2005. He and Roos have an experienced professional relationship, and GS is keen to do less travelling. It's not an issue of pinching him from Sydney or any choice AGAINST Sydney. If Colless tries to make it an us and them story of theft and subterfuge, he's kidding no-one.

I am surprised by this, this being that Stone commutes from Melbourne, and the reports that Maxfield does the same.

I can understand doing it occasionally, or that frequently for a short period, but since 2005?

Now that's commitment.

Above and beyond what Colless should expect.

In fact, Colless should be grateful it has been that way for so long.

Think it's great the swans academy in Sydney is working in a place dominated by rugby. School systems are nowhere near as strong as Victoria. Sydney need to accept that they can't always get a free kick

Matthew Lloyd just said that Perris doesn't want to be on the rookie list as part of the Sydney NSW acadermy policy. Said that the kid thinks he is good enough to be in the national draft. Reckons theres clubs that are ready to draft him including us.

Lloydy did say that Colless had it all wrong and chairman should stay out of footy sidw of things. Had a chuckle.

Why wouldn't the kid rather be on a senior list, with a coach he knows, and the very real prospect of serious game time? The swans know they have it good, and are just trying to maintain the status quo! Come to the dees, young fella!!

The real problem is that 18 other clubs will want to pick him up aswell. Unless he comes out and say he wants to ONLY go to the dees and no one else.

18?

Which is why I think he'll stick with the swans scholarship. But a bit of pressure from our part might force them to use a primary list spot and not a rookie list spot.

If Roos says he's good enough to be drafted in the main draft then most other clubs would take note at least. So I'm hardly getting my hopes up that we draft him. But I can certainly see why the kid would take the chance and get better pay and a primary list spot.

It's different because he's a scholarship player not an academy guy. But Roos' job as head of the academy was to get his guys drafted, so in a lot of ways he's actually still doing his job for Sydney!

I read somewhere that the collywobbles was where he was going.

Sorry cant remember where I read it must be old age!

Send him a box of Kleenex and get it made specifically with the Dees logo on it.

I would also put a photo of a smiling Roos with the caption "up yours Richard" and the two finger salute.

That would do it I reckon.

If Perris is only being offered a rookie contract, then there is nothing wrong with Roos telling him that his AFL club would put him on their senior list.

Just to clarify. He is a Swans Academy player not a NSW Scholarship player. About 5 years ago the AFL set up an inducement for the Swans and Brisbane to put a big investment into the Greater Sydney region and the equivalent for the Brians in Qld to identify and develop young school age players I believe as young as U9's from areas where there should be lots of talented players but who have no contact with AFL and therefore go to Rugby etc. The inducement was if they trained them up in their Academy they could have them with their last draft picks. As an example the Swans paid Roosy according to that article $300,000 a year for the past 3 yrs and a bunch of other coaches and staff to train over 500 juniors through the Academy in the hope that at the end of that enormous investment of money, resources and time they might pick up a player. I don't believe they have picked up one yet out of probably over 1000 players who have gone through the Academy. So if Perris is one of the first, or "the" first it isn't surprising that the Swans are just a bit [censored] that the guy they paid $300,000 a year to oversee their investment, right at the end when it's about to bear it's first player, try's to knock the player off. This system is entirely different to the NSW Scholarship system which doesnt' involve this type of investment.

Personally I find it hard to believe that someone of Roosy's calibre would do this. I find it much more likely that the scenario above is correct and the player has already said he won't accept going on the Swan's rookie list and on that basis Roosy has then said to him, he might be interested in taking him at Melbourne. Colless has probably got this wrong.

If he goes into the Draft and he is an untried Swans Academy player, I'm not sure what pick we would give up for him and whether some other team would get him before us anyway. Roos can't control that. So the inducement is hardly saying to him just agree to come to us and we'll take you.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
