Matthews laughed off suggestions he would pursue the job and enter a 21st season as an AFL/VFL coach.

"No one's asked me and I'm not applying," he said.

"I've had my time as coach and I'm happy to live the rest of my life without the coaching cap on."

Sounds pretty definitive that he is not keen but until u ask him u never say never I suppose.

Sounds pretty definitive that he is not keen but until u ask him u never say never I suppose.

I would say definitive would be like, "No, I'm not interested in coaching anymore", like someone who's retired might put it...

that would be convincing... so until then, never say never !

Anyone whos anyone will be given a call and sounded out. For no other reason to say it was done. That and you cant always predict what reactions might be.

That said I dont think Lethal has any passion for coaching now. He seems very settled into media. There's no risk there, just a nice cheque.

In 2012, he said he was interested in the MFC position, but was not contact by the club. It was on 3AW for everyone to hear. I know Gerard Healy was surprized to hear that, as I think all the listeners were surprized. 1 big royal [censored]-up.

Where did you source or hear him say he was "interested in the MFC position" Tone? Totally contradicts my memories of his responses during that period.

He may not have been contacted by the club but i recall him being asked twice about the MFC coaching role prior to Neeld being appointed. When asked on the first footy show panel (Chanel 7 Sunday Footy) if he was interested i recall him throwing his head back and laughing "No no no".

Then i think it was 3AW he was asked again about 5 days later (Friday night game i think), he said there's no way he would coach us "with the present imbeciles that were running the show there. There'd have to be an amazing change at the top" or something along those lines. The word imbeciles was definitely used. Usually not a sign of confidence in an organisation you might be considering joining.
