POST GAME - ROUND 1

Featured Replies

I was stupid enough to renew my membership today. For the last time after 58 years of membership. Never again!

I think we will be 0 - 11 at the midway period, we are that bad and I can't see us winning a game in the first half of the season.

The coach has to change the game plan or we won't win a game all year and he will be unemployed.

Also get rid of the "not so right player" and play the ones with some sort of future.

I actually agree. Even though we play GWS & GC in the next few rounds. Both look like they never give up, and Gazza Jnr, will smash us single handed.

This football club is officially a joke. We are absolutely dissolving into irrelevancy, actually no we already are completely irrelevant. I just hope the players and coaches are bleeding and hurting as much as the supporters. Words just can't describe what a rabble we are!

I think half the VFL teams would walk all over the MFC. Not AFL standard at all.

And how long were we going to wait before Blease came on?

In his career or just today?

When you bring in average players, expect average results!

N.Jones was tagged by Cornes but Cornes killed him the other way.Jones, when you get tagged, you are responsible for your opponent,I was at the Suns-Saints game last night and when the Saints had the ball,Ablett was shoulder to shoulder with Sam Gilbert, his tag for most of the night.

We still don't man up when the oppositition have the ball and with that, you won't win a game of football ever.Port kicked the ball to unmanned teammates all day resulting in easy goals.I was disgusted when Frawley wouldn't chase-couldn't be bothered.

The recycled player experiment will be a failure on Michael Voss proportions.

The absolute bottom line is we don't work hard enough when we don't have the ball. The only way this MIGHT be rectified is recognise the worst offenders and send them to Casey for 3-4 weeks and keep doing that all year if that's what it takes.Sooner or later,we will learn which players will bust their arse when they don't have the ball and the ones that don't can play the rest of the year in the VFL,because their work ethic is nowhere near AFL standard.

Sam Blease should never start as sub again,he came on and had more disposals than 4 team mates that played full games and showed more desperation than most.

Congratulations Jack Viney and Matt Jones, both can hold their head up very high.

To only lay 54 tackles when we had so much less of the ball is a DISGRACE,that number tells me everything I need to know about our application & attitude.

If nothing changes,Bombers and West Coast will hammer us by 100 points and maybe even the Giants in Round 4.

I was on such a high watching the Suns beat the Saints at Metricon last night and now it doesn't get much lower.

Our attempt at "zoning " was disgraceful. Protecting grass flat footed doesn't work. You need movement. I thought Neeld was focusing on defence??

The lack of desire from the players was unwatchable.

So many players not AFL standard. Neeld stuffed up by picking his recruits instead of players who were in form and showing the fundamentals.

why was Blease sub? he came on and had more of an impact in his first 5 minutes on than some others did all game.

Geeze it must be frustrating for Clark to receive such poor delivery into the forward line all the time.

I can only put it down to fitness, other than that, no idea.

Gillies needs to go, he was top of my list of worst on ground.

Today I saw something I thought I'd never see. I saw Nathan Jones drop his head and give up in a contest that lead to a Port goal. Nathan Jones gave up.

Neeld seems to have killed any kind of passion or pride for the club the players may have ever thought of having.

Renewing my membership will always happen.

I went on my own today and stood on the steps. The familiar faces are not there so much. My son has jumped ship.

Old rusted on supporters I expected to come across, I did not see. I'm bitterly disappointed.

Im prepared to cut the new players some slack for now but Jamar, Tapscott, Frawley, Dunn, Watts, Nicholson, Garland, Sellar are pure liabilities, that is five out of 6 defenders, gillies would be there but first game. Jamar what a disappointment, id rather play Spencer at least ge has a crack. Time to bring in players with heart starting with Jetta.

Gillies was moved to full foward! Why?

Gillies was moved to full foward! Why?

Why?

Easy, the ball was not going forward, and up there he could do less damage.

Would at the very least like to see us stop making the game complicated and just play man on man, just worry about beating your opponent and just run hard into space when one of your team mates is looking for an option.

A few observations:

1. Wines V Toumpas - we have huge trouble getting our hands on the ball first. Wines, like Viney, does this exceptionally well. Toumpas would be an excellent addition to a good side. He reminds me very much of Scott Camporeale, who was often the icing on the cake in a very good Carlton side. Toumpas will struggle in this side until we get better distributors. Wines would have been a more astute selection given our development.

2. I can't recall a time when a struggling side recruiting players surplus to needs at other clubs has worked. It smacks of St Kilda in the 80's. Good sides can afford to top up. None of our experienced additions who played today would get a game in any other side in the comp. I thought Byrnes tried hard early and at least applied a bit of forward pressure, Rodan was OK in patches, Pederson and Gillies were both very disappointing.

3. At the end of 2011 I strongly advocated Mark Williams for the coaching gig. In 2008 I thought we made a major error in not going for an experienced coach. I have seen nothing to make me change my mind.

4. Viney is going to be everything we hoped for. A stunning debut given the circumstances.

5. I am looking forward to the spin the Club administration put on this one. At home and more experienced than Port, we should have been far more competitive. The Coach and his panel has had 12 months and this is now his "team".

6. With every passing year Neale Daniher is looking more and more like a coaching genius.

What was it Mclardy levelled at fans thats upset some.??

just curious

A sad sad day for the MFC.

I think McClardy comments now have managed to upset both fickle and non fickle supporters alike.

I have to admit being fed up with Old Dee's comments lately but gee whiz he's looking to be an astute and wise man indeed.

Left 10 mins before 3 qtr time. Threw my scarf on the ground. Forget it I'm not wasting an afternoon on that crap ever again.

This club is officially in danger of folding.

I have NEVER felt so ashamed, disheartened, devastated, demoralised and shattered.... Sorry but Neeld and the rest of the Coaching staff resposible for the Shambles I saw today have surely "fallen on their swords" After all, Neeld has put his neck on the line by saying we expected improvement and that he couldn't wait for today's game......I am sick to death of hearing how Members like me should be patient , give them time etc.,etc.. I have listened to these kinds of comments and read that sort of absolute crap for far too long.... Sorry but my Membership is being cancelled this year affter what I saw today... I am now broken Hearted and just as "interested" as players such as Watts (bloody soft disgrace) Frawley (Far too slow) Garland,, No Idea how to read the play or make a clever decision, Tapscott (prancing around like a mini Arnold Schwarzenegger and just as big a Show Pony) Sellars (no football brain) Dunn ( should have been traded) Sylvia( No Zip) Many more players of the previous NO Heart Ilk from Years past... Only shining lights VINEY, BLEASE (why the hell was he the Sub ???) Sack the selectors who made THAT decision WHATEVER their reasonong !!! Jordie McKenzie (battled his guts out) Nicholson tried hard, Jones Gave his all until exhausted !! All our new players tried bloody hard but could hardly have shone on their debuts in a team that gave them no support !! No more Excuses !! There ARE none left... We were unguided with absolutely NO idea how to execute anything that remotely resembled a game plan.... Pity Help us going forward... We simply CANNOT tolerate this current obviously uninspiring Leadership.... How embarrassed would people like Ronald Dale Barassi be Feeling ????? I am too upset to continue but I could write many more words if I could only bring myself to continue ..... Such a sad Day... p.s. I am in my 60's and have supported Melbourne Footy club for nigh on 50 years !!!

I was at the game today (left at 3/4 time like everyone else) and besides from the impressive debuts of Viney and M.Jones (both 22 touches), I'm struggling to find many positives from this game and I'm usually an optimistic type of guy. Our backline was woeful as was our delivery into our 50. Gillies takes my vote for worst player on the ground. Looked slow and didn't present any hunger towards wanting to play. Jones and Grimes played their usual parts while players like Howe and Clark may present the only reason for supporters to turn up to games this year.

Other notes

- Jamar looks much better.

- Older recruits Byrnes and Rodan had their moments but both need to push harder

- Why? Oh why was Blease subbed on so late? Could've injected some life at 1/2 time

- Watts...Sigh.

- Neeld had better be careful where he treads from here as he's already standing on thin ice

- Why was that mark paid to Schultz. Clearly over the line

- Terlich and Kent better get excited. They're going to play next week.

- Fingers crossed for Clark. Hope his injury isn't serious.

- Congrats on Dunny for 100 games.

I think McClardy comments now have managed to upset both fickle and non fickle supporters alike.

  • PREGAME: St. Kilda

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
