Jack Grimes to wear #31

Featured Replies

Great decision MFC. #31 deserves to be honoured again. Couldn't think of a better option than to give it to one of our captains.

Jack will truly do it proud! I can see the 13th premiership cup being held high by #31.,,what a beautiful day that will be!

Well done Jack - Congratulations.

And to the great man Ron - fantastic little clip on the web site of you handing over the baton to the next premiership ( Co-) captain !!!

that's awesome.

my guess is the story isn't meant to be 'out' yet, but this is what happens.

thoguht it might be viney that got it, but very happy to see someone such as grimes don the #31.

break the curse, jack, break the curse.

I'm probably alone, but I don't like this. Let the man make his own history in his own jumper number. 16 was Jack Grimes, in my mind.

Yeah I'm not a fan either. Hated it when Jurrah did it.

Totally with you. The last guy that had the number caused so much anguish, so much damage to our brand. In the club's own words he was a 'dark cloud'. What ever 'sacredness(?)' was ever in that number is as dead as Dillinger. Leave it alone at least for a few years. Sixteen was already a decent number with Chopper Lovell and Johnstone, let Grimesy forge ahead with it. WTF melbourne

and he hardly fired a shot after that happened

and he hardly fired a shot after that happened

(allegedly) took a swing or two though.

I can undertand the club wanting to close the door and put the full stop on the Scully debacle, but I disagree with this move for reasons stated.

Club has got to respect it's history, and by giving the great Number 31 to one of our Captains they are doing this.

I like it. Go Grimes.

I normally don't like number changes - but at least we can be sure that the person taking #31 will be (and already is) a great player for the club. At least we are not jinxing a new recruit with it.

Pretty unhappy to be honest, why honour barassi now when it'll be Grimes' 6th season and his 2nd as captain. He's a 23 year old who I'm sure has already popularized 16 among supporters and made it his own. To be honest, it's just an excuse to take a picture, shake his hand and have a little article written. Why didn't we give him 31 from the start? Oh that's right, because the number was occupied by Paul wheatley who was an underrated handy player who no one compared to Barassi.

Nasher and co. - Grimes has done little in 16. It's still TJs to me...

I couldn't think of anyone on our list that would enjoy the imagery and spirit than Grimes.

We highlight past achievements too much but you just can't run away from Barrassi.

Grimes will be 31 in no time.

I lived the clip - RDB and JG made it very clear that the number doth not make the man, but nonetheless it is a well deserved honour.

Lets hope he will be the next Premiership captain and when so then we can bump this discussion.

As an aside one #31 since RDB did win a premiership - unfortunately not an AFL/VFL or even a footy one, but the (I think) immediate successor to RDB became Premier of Tasmania, Ray Groom.

I'm not old enough to appreciate the significance that comes with #31, but from comments and the sentiments of the video, I believe they've made a good choice. Love the video, whoever is in charge of the Dees Social Media is really stepping up...

And this video is also a nice 2-fingered salute to he we don't speak of...

i dont mind when new players come in and they are given a number a high number like 49 or something then a low number become available and they change to it, but i dont understand it when players change there numbers upwards, if your given anything under 30 it should just be kept! 31 should just be retired

I think the jumper is so revered that the club is trying to lift the curse that has plagued it since RDB made it so famous and return it to its former glory - a bit manufactured for mine but there are so many other things going on that are exciting this to me is a bit meh.

Me too, it's a great video.

This is simply another element in Mark Neeld's strategy of re-establishing a great culture at this club.

Jack Grimes would take a bullet for this club. He's a Demon through and through, and Mark Neeld has just acknowledged it, very publicly, in a way that is a massive compliment to the young man.

That being the case, what do you think the new draftees will think when Jack welcomes them to club and they see the passion in his expression and actions when he talks about the joint?!

It's probably much the same as new draftees to the Cats would've thought when they first met Cameron Ling.

We're setting up a good, tight club culture here. It's no longer about show pony individuals - it's about team and club. And Mark Neeld is convinced that Jack Grimes is the man to lead the charge.

Perhaps a slightly left field thing to do, but I reckon this is what it's all about.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
