Dayle Garlett

This is just too obvious, it smacks the WC bad boy trick all over again.

Wouldn't they have drafted him if it was a trick?

Good point, I am in the no, no and no camp but if he winds up at a WA Club we'll revisit this often in future.

It's truly a sterile world now when someone who is 18 cannot have one beer and one cigarette without being pilloried by hand -wringers .

Sure it's dumb to put it on FB while the draft is happening but FFS-all of you who have written him off for life over this photo should get a grip on reality .

he may be naughty but if its the same Garlett that played rep for WA then he can tear teams up .

Thats all that I care about .

Oh he smokes! Oh how terrible!

Harden up!

Not just smokes and alcohol....it shows he has nothing upstairs.

He also got kicked out of draft camp.

Does anyone have links they can post to him doing illicit drugs or is it known that he definitely did? I can't recall this happening.

The photo of him having a dart is quite old, saw that mid season I believe. Yes its an awful look but let's not forget he is only 18 and has a very challenging upbringing most likely without a decent rolemodel/mentor that so many kids go through the system get.

From all accounts he is a great kid and quite likable. The best thing for this kid would be to get out of WA and try a fresh start.

Really hope he makes it somewhere but the MFC is probably not the right place at the moment to take on a full time project like this when we are really only just rebuilding ourselves

Yep-there is no mention anywhere of drugs and the photo is four months old probably posted by a "mate".

This is the kid that stood out in the games I watched on Fox .

He slotted goals in finals for Cales new club , Claremont .

Some people can never see beyond the obvious .

To the hand- wringing goody-goodies I say "Let he who has never had a beer and a smoke be the first to cast nasturtiums upon the young gun".

The photo worked-watch him star for the Bummers now .

Remember this is a footy club ,not a church group.

If a player has a beer ,we can handle it ,we will live through it .

the silver tails wont live through it, thats been the main problem for the last 40 yrs.

We have to create a strong culture of mind and body.....no loose cannons please.

The FD has set a high bar for the type of characters they want. You don't then go out and get a new recruit who has a reputation as a DH and slacker and say if he goes of the rails we'll just have to we suck-it-up. It's got nothing to do with the supporters, it's about the type of environment you want your players to develop in and who you want them to develop with.

with the culture revamp that has occured in the last 12 months.. i think our culture should be strong enough to steer an impressionable mind the correct way... i know it wont happen.. but its a yes from me!

Does this kid actually want to be an AFL player? Cause his attitude certainly doesn't seem to show it.

Really?

Really?

We cut a couple of non-hackers from the list and suddenly we've overcome nearly half a century of clueless culture, and it's fine for us to bring morons into the club.

You're easily impressed.

CarrotTop ... What about my 'one-strike policy' rookie list suggestion? Bring him in entirely on our terms and boot him if he stuffs up even once.

If he does something dumb, it's all on him. If he makes a go of it, the club comes out smelling roses and we have a seriously good player on our hands.

I just think we've got to be careful not to hang, draw and quarter what is essentially an 18yo boy before he's even had a chance to redeem himself.

I'd like to get him on the basis of talent alone, but MFC isn't in a position at the moment to take a punt on him. If he is rookie listed by a strong club with a solid culture and good role models like Sydney (Goodesy), Essendon (Nathan Lovett Murray) or Geelong (take your pick), I think he'll succeed. He'll have to demonstrate to all and sundry the required level of discipline and commitment before he gets near a senior list.

We are not doing anything of the sort - nor are all the other AFL clubs - he doesn't seem to have the where-with-all to comply to an elite environment.

Our leaders are a good group but they are young and don't need someone who could prove a distraction.

We need hardworking tyros all pulling in the same direction - now more than ever.

Exactly. Does he have the wherewithal to be an elite, professional sportsman and all that that entails?

Why bring in someone who's not prepared to do the hard yards? Which would seem to be the case here.

Ok, so apparently the 'silver tails' explains why we don't want to touch him. But why did 17 other clubs not even want a bar of him with any pick. If anyone thinks this is about a couple of beers and the odd [censored], you are delusional.

To me the thing is it's not so much that he's a bad boy but the fact he's so far from a good boy and he doesn't get it.

Even at his worst Ben Cousins would still train the house down and go out there and give it his all (before doing drugs for a week or whatever). Garlett is obviously unfit which means even if he's a gun he wont get a kick in the AFL for most of 2013 season. Plus from that interview it doesn't look like he had any insight into what he was doing wrong. Oh yeah I need to stop drinking and going out and I'll do that now. Sure buddy!

Posted

You'd reckon he'd only make it on one of the four pillars - football talent.

He's a miss on character and physical attributes ( endurance) and probably on competitiveness as well. Unless they have a different set of criteria for the rookie list ( which they won't!) he's not even worth thinking about ........................ not even close.

Posted

The most worrying part is in other photos he's drinking UDL's... what kind of man drinks UDL's?!?!

Talent will only get you so far

In a team enviroment character is a really important attribute

The kid definitely needs new management. It's amazing that after what's happened the last few days he's still got public facebook photos!

Surely they would have told him to get that stuff set to private or removed entirely?

Anyway, we won't go near him. He is the opposite of Neeld's mould, and would contradict the culture we're attempting to build.

And if he stuffs up in February and we've sacked him before the season even begins we're left with only three rookies and one less player on our list.

High risk, high reward which we're not in a position to entertain.

To use a cricketing analogy. It's Day 1 of a Test Match at Sabina Park and we've been sent in to bat on a green top with Curtley Ambrose and Courtney Walsh steaming in.

If they pitch one up on a good length just outside off stump we need to let that go through to the keeper and take the shine off the new ball before playing any extravagant drives through cover and risk edging it to the slips or the keeper if you get where I'm coming from......?

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. BLWNBA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I arrived at around 1015 and the squad was already out on the track. The rehab group consisted of XL, McAdam, Melksham, Spargo and Sestan. Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
