So you think that Melbourne cannot position itself as a facilitator of some of the potentially large trades that get held up due to not being able to work out a 2 way deal? I don't see him saying anything about us doing favors for other clubs, MFC wouldn't do anything that was not of benefit to themselves, but we have some powerful chips on the table that we can use in many different ways.

Being a facilitator in trades can actually net us something that might not normally be on the table in trade week, but because the desire of the other two parties is significant enough (ie GC really want Tippett, but will not give up pick 2 to Adelaide, and they know that they can't secure him with a player and a second round pick... GC know that Brisbane might be prepared to offer their pick... which is assumed to be pick 8. For GC to trump that who do they have to bring to the table? Us or the Dogs or Port... The fact that we have 2 picks like the Dogs do, means that we could be more likely to negotiate or discuss things. Given we might have an interest in Caddy, and also don't really want to be forced to secure Viney at 3, can you see that it's in theirs and our interest to negotiate in good faith?

Take a look at Essendon's attempts at trade week, they seem to want to secure players from other clubs... pay absolutely nothing for them, then whinge that the other party isn't playing fair (Caddy last year with mediation as a prime example) The fact of the matter is that most trades get done because both clubs can see benefit in doing the deal. Rarely will one club be able to shaft the other.....

If you can't see that then I can't help you I'm sorry..... but for the sake of my credibility should I propose that we pick up Franklin and Ablett to assist our midfield and forward line with pick 3 and 4?

Yes i understand that, though F/S is after trade period so it would be quite difficult to facilitate trades prior to F/S period under the table. Especially when the teams he suggested 'Adelaide/Collingwood' are playing finals footy.

Though reading your post does raise the issue that the Bulldogs could do the same as insert the clause that GC do bid on Viney :/

Isn't Tippett a free agent?

Nope.

I think his trade value would be 5-10 personally. Anyone paying more would be cray

No, Nominations are before trade week, and bids are 10am on the first day of trade period. I think you need to check your dates again. Otherwise we could just trade away pick 3 and secure Viney with a second round pick.

The dogs find themselves in a great position as well, but the fact that we have Viney in the mix, as well as our mid round pick of 12 or 13 or whatever it is, perhaps makes us stronger, but does not for a minute mean that the dogs couldn't involve themselves in a meaningful way.

Sorry typo. Trying to post in between things at work. Your right, F/S is before, which is why i was arguing it would be hard to facilitate prior to F/S bidding.

I think pick 13 will ultimately be our trump card in a trade

Dont' think anyone is disagreeing with you... but thats exactly why the GC need to work something out with another club with a pick in that range (incidentally Brisbane have one) in order to secure Tippett if they want him. Hence the reason a third party comes to the table to work something out. GC have Caddy and Toy potentially wanting to move back to Melbourne.... who are the clubs in Melbourne that might have an interest in Caddy and / or Toy that have appropriate picks?

Good, I hope were right. Just make sure we have a Vice ready, & rotating vice.

I'm sure we will be trying to work with Gold Coast in a fair and equitable way - where we can all walk away happy. My comments maybe just highlighted my Demons bias - but at the end of the day the best outcome should be sought by all parties. As I said earlier in another thread - hope everyone gives a bit.

No probs,

Pick 13 would definately be our starting point I would think as well.... but if trades involving Tippett etc start eventuating, then a lot of movement might occur.

Free Agency will create a bit more movement in trade week as well I reckon... For example if Cloke leaves... and Tippett hasn't been secured by a Qld team... What happens if Goddard moves. Losing a 'franchise' player creates a huge amount of free cash that has to be spent...

Dogs are in a nice position, but we can still beat them if we had too. Also in a strange sort of way, we can also keep them honest if we do retain pick 3 & 4 for GWS or Gold Coast to obtain. If we are out of "any" race Dogs might be able to put a lesser deal on the table. Very interesting times ahead - just hope the planets line up for us.

Issue with pick 13 is that their are alot of good players on the table in the draft at that point still.

Would be a shame to see it go for Caddy :(

Gold Coast also have Jolly wanting to return to SA - as another poster pointed out. Could easily be the missing piece in the puzzle.

What interested me is if Gold Coast lose Caddy, Toy & Jolly WTF would they seriously commit pick 2 in a draft for another potential massive headache in two years time?

GWS are in a similar boat talk is already going about Patton & Tyson, WTF would they seriously commit pick 1 in a draft for another potential massive headache in two years time?

Who really is doing the bluffing here? Again throw Tippett into the equation for Gold Coast - geez tough call for them to make.

What like Gysberts & Cook - geez our record is not good with kids out the TAC cup around that mark - huge gamble for us. Maybe we are learning from elsewhere sometimes a ready made with upside is a lesser risk for us. But, things change.

'Melbourne Football Club' isn't a recruiter so our past record of recruiting players in the first round is largely irrelevant. Mark Neeld, Neil Craig, Todd Viney and co. are the ones who will be selecting players, so pointing out Dean Bailey and Barry Prendergast's past mistakes is a naive thing to do.

Give Neeld and his men a chance to do their thing before assuming they will stuff up.

We cant be scared to draft and develop forever. It is the key to a successful club at the end of the day. If we constantly farm off other teams talents then the source will eventually run dry

It might be naive to think that Bailey & Prendergast where the sole reason for the "mistakes" - why not blame Daniher & Cameron - maybe the real problems are deeper than many perceive - but thats another debate.

The key to a successful club is obtain players from all parts of the recruiting process ie Trade, Draft and now free agency in the right years - not put all your eggs in one basket. Have we learned nothing? Obviously not.

huh!? "Have we learned nothing? Obviously not." does that mean we've learnt a lot?

I suspect we might have learned a lot - but it would vary from the thinking of most around here. Obviously many in here know more than the now professionals at our football club - shivers you just have to ask them ie posters in here. Just a thought.

He is 203 cm, 25 years old, normally plays between 18-22 games a year, kicks around 40-50 goals per year, maybe bit low on his accuracy, reliable to take the number one defender every time, Adelaide paying him around 600K per year - but he is "inconsistent"????

I would have thought he might be poorly understood in Victoria - but highly sought after in Queensland - strange. Geez if this bloke played in a Collingwood jumper and was a Victorian, there would not be a club in Victoria that would not be after him.

Here have a look at his stats by game - he's pretty hot and cold imo.

As wellas that he often goes missing in big games, and the two finals this season are proof of that.

I would like to think that at some stage in the next couple of weeks that an article will appear in the Hun/Courier Mail stating the Melbourne have made a massive play for Tippett, with a potential trade of our Pick 4 being put up. If Gold Coast want him, they will have to come up with a better deal, and really reconsider putting up a dummy bid for JV.

Of course, my suggestion of Pick 4 for Tippett is all smoke and mirrors, just a ploy to get in to the heads of the other recruiting teams.

Tippet doesn't want to come to Melbourne, we talked to him last year, he was coming over to speak to us because of his respect for Neil Craig but rang back and said he just didn't want to come to Melbourne, not the club the city.

Won't have to worry about that with us...

Yeah, Nathan Jones (pick 12, 2005), Jack Grimes (pick 14, 2007), James Frawley (Pick 12, 2006)...........what a bunch of spuds.

I'd take Tippet at the right price. What that price is I don't know, around $550,000 - $650,000 sounds right, then throw in a 3 year term

Jones heaps of people around here wanted to trade not so long ago, Jack is fine bit injury prone until new fitness regime, Frawley awesome.

If you throw in Bate are around 8 --- So its a 50/50 punt - Geez how much of a gambler are you? Wonder if we can improve the odds Dr in a "game" all about probabilities.

There are always two sides to the coin I agree. But if we can "load" one side a little more - bingo

When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
