Beams signs for 3 ... Cloke edges closer to Dees?

Featured Replies

The term has been used a fair bit recently so i'll have a crack. Blind Freddy can see when we win the midfield battle on the day we have no forward structure. I say get cloke+ viney+caddy+toumpas/boak and we are good as gold.

The money is not an issue - Green gone frees up $400-500K/year as will Moloney or Sylvia if either of them go. Davey has one year left and is on $500-600K/year. We have money to burn for the next couple of years might as well spend it rather than pay 92.5% of the cap or give it to players to beef up their contracts when they dont deserve it.

Cloke playing 40-80metres from goal leading up to the wings with Clark playing 0-40 out and being dangerous around the goals will be great for our structure.

Only half of Green's contract counts in the salary cap though.

The money may not be an issue for the first couple of years, but I'm not sold on the 3+ years after that.

Let's not mention the marketing and focus that would come to the club. It creates a ripple.

The last time I queued for tickets was 2000 - I want that feeling again.

You would have to ask if Cloke is actually worth the money mentioned he certainly hasn't had a stellar year. In Tonight's game against North he has racked up 10 possessions for 3 points at 3 quarter time.

Dawes has 6 possessions for nil score at the same time.

Not exactly the twin towers they were supposed to be.

Goes toward answering why Collingwood lost.

I want to go on record, I just don't want Cloke, not for peanuts, he will be far

too bloody old when we are in contention, if we get there at all. get a couple of guys younger

that will fit in !!

Starting in 2013 - Vets get max $100k outside the cap.

Based on the Swan off field issues and the Cloke distraction all year Cloke has to go now. If he signs on at the end of the season it will only be forgiven if they win the flag this year. Otherwise if I was playing with him I'd be very dirty on the distraction it's created all year and the undue pressure he's placed on himself and the team.

I'd say he's a certainty to leave now, and I think the Pies know it.

Is he down to commanding Maccas wages yet? If so sign him up.

I don't get the "he isn't worth the money" point of view. The contract would be Heavily front ended to the point when Cloke is 30 he would be on bugger all. Right now we don't have many players who command high salaries and Jones,Howe and Trengove are all signed up so no one will be pushed out by Cloke's wage. The aim of front ending the contract means if we are any good in 5 years time we will still have cap room to pay our good players. It's all gravy baby!

Thought Cloke was a complete sook last night, albeit pretty average disposal to him at times, his character hardly shone through when needed....give me the Mitch Clark style of approach to the game any day of the week.

Do remember Clo

He is also the bloke who nearly won the grand final on his own last year kicking goals from 60 metres out.

We need 1-2 big bodies in the forward line. So who do you target if it isn't Cloke?

A new club with Neeld & Leigh Brown might be what he needs.

He is not a dud. But his days at the Filth look over to me

But that was last year. We don't need a prima dona - which is how he has been recently.

We need more team players not soldiers of fortune.

I think you could be right in saying his days with the Maggies are coming to an end. Being with Neeld and Brown might help him, but will he help us, or just crack the s**ts when things don't go his way. He's not another Tony Lockett who was so good you could forgive him. He's not even in Barry Hall's class either. Right now he's playing like a big sookie baby. Is that the sort of "big body" we need?

Think I'd prefer Leigh Brown to don the boots instead.

But that won't happen. And who else is out there. He can bomb them from 65. I don't take too much from his 2012. All is not right. A change could be just the thing.

Yes it is a gamble. But Clark needs help.

Guys, have been advised that Cloke is gone...I doubted he would leave this whole time, but have been told to the contrary. Further collingwood resignings this week. Happy to take bets if you don't believe. Very very reliable source within the filth.

They have any idea where he's going?

Gone where is the question?

He has no idea. But you will see resignings happen again this week. I never thought he would go!!!!!!!

I personally believe it will be Carlscum. Strong connections with a M.Malthouse should he take the reins. Although same can be said with the ex Filth officials we will have working for us both now and in the new year! ;) keep your eyes on the last bit.

I think what many are saying is that we could perhaps get 2 very good players for what we would be paying Cloke, regardless of front loading. Over $1mill per year is speculated as the asking price.

I think you will find that MFC know what they want and now that Neeldy has a painted canvas he now knows what type of painting he is after. I don't believe we will get Cloke but rather look for another forward "cheaper option" and spend the money in the guts which is where we need it. To date the new management team has highlited what we all see which makes me comfortable in trusting them in doing what's right.

Hence why there will be a large turnover. I think we all agree there is plenty of dead wood at our club.

Fair point i'll take that. If there were two good mids available I would take the mids over Cloke no doubt. When Beams and Sidebottom were both un signed I wanted us to offer them 500k a year each for 5 years. But it doesn't look like apart from Boak that there are many mids available.

And Cloke is a FA, so he'd cost us no picks or trades, in theory.

But that's a lot of $ for one player. Would make him in the top half doz highest paid players, I'd think.

How bout Montagna and Sewell, instead, as FAs? $550k p/a each (or similar rated FA mids). Would they be better than Cloke for $1.1?

These discussions are reminiscent of primary school swap cards. As if these players would up and walk across to the MFC just because a poster of an unofficial supporter site raises their personal bid. As Austin Powers would say, "I'd like a gold-plated toilet seat, but it just ain't going to happen".

If the money was equal for Cloke or two quality mids I would take the mids any day of the week.Sewell just signed with the hawks and I'm not sure about Montagna but at least you are having a crack. Most would just type mids, mids, mids.

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
