Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

As someone who has floated this - I have not heard anywhere that the AFL sanctions this type of behaviour. And as it is new to AFL (if sanctioned) it is fraught with danger.

If Essendon sign a RFA and then a club meets that contract and says 'here we will trade him to you' - I bet you the Bombers say 'nah, don't want for the price' and that club is stuck with a player they don't want and who doesn't want to be there.

I don't believe that a sign and trade will be at all possible with any free agents.

Yes, it happens in the NBA, but I am of the understanding that there is a rule about trading players who have only recently signed - a minimum amount of time that must pass once signing before they can be traded.

Some sort of safeguard against teams signing a player, then trading them a couple of days or weeks later.

If Blease were in this draft I would take him with our 3rd rounder at the lowest.

If Blease was on the market, he would easily be worth a top ten pick.

So, YDKSAF.

No i don't think so. He went at no 17 didn't he when first drafted? Do you think he has improved on that,? I don't. I mean he only played a handful of games, suffered a very serious injury, is not great defensively and has really only played one or two really good games.

Don't get me wrong, he's good and will get much better but if he did nominate for the draft (which has been previously mentioned in this thread that is unlikely ie if we couldn't come to terms and forced him to go to the draft he's more likely to go thru the PSD, assuming of course his suitor is GWS or GC) i reckon he'd go late first round at best.

I think he's gonna be upset when we don't draft the entire consensus top 10, and then trade Morton plus pick 872 for Beams.

Because they are free to sign with whoever they like.

What exactly would you be trading?

With normal trades, when a player is out of contract but not a free agent, his team still owns the exclusive right to sign him unless he goes in the draft. That right can be traded.

With a free agent there is no rights to trade, as every club now has that right.

Ok, so if we have restricted free agent, and that player wishes to go to club A. We are keen to keep him or drive the bargain so match the offer. If club A says fine we'll trade you pick X for player and player B, wouldn't that still be acceptable?

I understand the value of trading players who are free agents is illogical, but it sounds like people are saying they won't be traded under any circumstances.

I don't think the AFL have had much thought of a 'sign & trade' scenario, and since it is new to the AFL (if it is allowed) I don't think it will be prevalent.

Any club that matches an offer without an agreement already in place is just waiting to get dudded and have a contract they don't want and a player that doesn't want to be there.

I think the only option an RFA has is go to draft and hope that certain club is going to pick you up.

Huh?

You are assuming his club can afford him, wants him, and that the player doesn't want to stay.

This would be incredibly rare.

Rare to the point that I don't think it will happen.

Wow, fair bit to keep to keep track of.

There happens to be a 11 day overlap between free agency period and trade period. My head might explode trying to work out scenarios.

At what point is a restricted free agent officially unattached? Commencement of free agency period I presume?

...

I believe that a player must serve at least 12 months of a contract to stop just that sort of shenaniganary.

Also RFAs can be traded* , but UFA cannot.

* From http://www.afl.com.a...09/default.aspx:

3. A player has served eight or more seasons of AFL football at one club, is one of the 10 highest-paid players at his club, and is now out of contract for the first time since reaching eight seasons of service.

The player is eligible to field offers from all rival AFL clubs.

If he wishes to change clubs, the player must decide on the best offer of his choice from one rival club.

His club has the right to match the presented offer.

If the club matches the offer, he may choose to remain with his original club, seek a trade or enter the Draft.

If the club does not or can not match the offer, the player can move to the new club of his choice.

His original club will receive a compensation pick for the loss of the player, on an AFL-determined formula to apply where clubs lose more free agents than they gain in any single transfer period.

Great spot.

But that isn't quite a 'Sign and Trade' with the emphasis on 'sign'...

If the club matches the offer, he may choose to remain with his original club, seek a trade or enter the Draft.

The player may stay and sign the contract OR seek a trade OR enter the draft.

Essentially, if Moloney for example, has a contract met by us, he can say 'nah' and ask for a trade, or 'nah' and enter the draft. With the latter more likely.

In US sports, a RFA who has an 'offer sheet' met must sign that contract. Here, we can offer a RFA the same contract but he can go into the draft if he wishes...

I guess my point has evolved into - you can try and trade RFAs but you have to ask yourself whether they will make it to that club through the draft anyway, in which it might be moot.

Jungle Dee = Grun Dee?

Another player who supported the MFC as a junior and went on to do bigger and better things at other clubs?

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
