Brad Green's Retirement - It's Official

Range Rover

Recommended Posts

Clubs in every sport 'retire' players. We do it and the fans are handwringing.

Brad was dropped and had injury issues and probably would have been told what the boys that have their contract talks on hold until October were told.

This way he gets to control his destiny and we get to applaud and thank him for his service and the club can get on with what we ultimately want them to do - improve the list and get us on our way.

Yes, Junior was retired too early. Doesn't mean that we should allow every good player to finish the way Neitz finished.

Brad did not retire on his own terms. Very disappointed if that is the case.

Why is it disappointing ?

Football is littered with past players and plenty of champions that were forced into retirement. Some older examples include Michael Tuck, Peter Daicos, Doug Hawkins, Budda Hocking and more recently Luke Power, Milburn, Cornes and plenty of others. It's actually unusual that a player retires on his own terms and if they do it's more often than not a premiership player. Fletcher and Harvey keep going because they're easily holding their place in their respective teams. The key being they've maintained their pace. But their situations aren't the norm. And rest assured if their form suddenly tapers away they'll quickly get tapped on the shoulder.

Footballers always think they've got another year, but clubs have to keep developing and improving. It's incumbent of them to do what they perceive is best for the club. I wouldn't want it any other way. I don't subscribe to the theory that a player should decide his own future because of past exploits. A player is the servant of the club. They're not owed the chance to bow out on their terms.

Players at poorly performing clubs are in an even more precarious position. Outside of the two development clubs we're the worst in the league. We need to get some young or mid age (FA) talent on the list. We're no longer winning games with Brad Green running around. I'd rather be losing and developing sustainable talent than losing with slow veterans that may have a year left.

I understand that clubs need quality senior talent to help nurture the young, but even so judgment calls need to be made. Brad's time had come.

It seems like yesterday I was watching him killing off Carlton's chances in 2000. He's a great guy, I thank him for many great memories and wish him well.

Heard today in an operating theatre (often a great source for footy news and gossip) that Brad did not retire on his own terms. Very disappointed if that is the case.

Funny, I thought he said himself after discussing matters with his family and friends that it's "the right time" to go out. I just went and checked the press conference again. I was right.

You are correct, I saw this as well. I also saw an interview a few weeks ago where he stated he would like to play on. I hope my source was wrong - he is an anesthetist so maybe he has been inhaling too much nitrous oxide and was confused!

I meant that I hope Brad retired because he wanted too - I would be disappointed if it was not the case. I personally hoped he would stay on another year - but that's just my opinion.

Hi DC after much thought I suggest we give a dual winnner for WOW ( changed it from WOD )

But I have read almost nothing on weekend as I am out of the country.

I could not seperate jimmi C with "dickwittery" and RR with "miscontextualizing"

What say you?

Agree OD it is hard to separate two outstanding worthy winners

However watching the Olympics and seeing winning being denied by 1/1000 of a second I think we have to apply a countback basis to arrive at a winner

On the basis that Rangey posted approximately twice the amount of square metres of raw text in the week than Jimmi, giving him an unfair advantage, I have to declare Jimmi the winner with "Dickwittery".

This decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into by the judge (moi).

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th
