The Good

Contested ball

Stoppages

Intensity

Jordie, Magner and Jones in tight

Jones' and Bartram's goals

Tom McDonald matched, and often beat, Reiwoldt

Morton

The Bad

Trengove's pace

Watts lack of physicality

Missed easy goals

Dunn centring the ball that led to Saints goal. Neeld would be furious.

St. Kilda subbing that new bloke off. Marking and Kicking was superb. Worst sub ever and the excuse of "he had a twinge" was spin.

The Ugly

The missed holding-the-man free kick to Morton.

The worst goal video review that we will ever see.

Unpressured turnovers (again)

Missed easy goals

Moloney's in the third was a shocker, and Howe should have converted in the second from straight in front.

Conversely, we managed to kick the difficult ones.

You've got to take your chances when they come

I thought Davey's forward pressure was really good. A couple of times he hasselled saints players into fumbles that resulted in Melbourne goals.

You can add Moloney to the uglies tonight. He made some howlers.

Really? To me he was about the only player who ran the ball out of the middle and wasn't kicking snaps out of clearances, even managed to handball a couple of times! Not out best player tonight, but hardly in the "uglies" catergory i thought

Fairly spot on although it's time to put Watts and Trengove into The Ugly for mine.

The Good

- We still have Frawley, Clarke, Sylvia and Jurrah to come into this team who are in our best 10 players. Sylvia counts because he was a sub coming back from 6 weeks off footy

- We know that Watts, Trengove and Tappy are quality youngsters. They struggled last night, but we know they're going to be fine players for our club.

- We still have Gysberts, Blease and Strauss (not to mention Cook, Jack Viney, pick 5ish and pick 12ish next year) to add to the mix. Plenty of potential there.

The 21+1 that played last night played with great effort and desire, but I think the above proves that we are very very very far away from our best mix of players.

Does that give us hope?

do we?

watts is really lacking the appetite for the contest at the moment, does not look interested

trengove is struggling with the C next to hiss name, not sure if he is putting too much pressure on himself or if he has a niggling injury

tapscott desperately needs to finish a full pre season and get some continuity in his footy

do we?

Yes, we do.

Watts was one of our best performers first 3 weeks when it was too tough for everyone around him. Wet and greasy night was not going to be the night for 196cm forwards- just ask nick Reiwoldt. Watts has steadily improved, can't wait till he's 100kg and 23 years old.

Tapscott is quality. He has been put into the side without a pre-season. He'll be on the back foot the whole year bc of that, but we know he's capable of being a strong bodied and skillful player.

Trengove is the player to worry about the least. he seems to be carrying an injury and is underperforming, but he's 20 years old. Dustin Martin has struggled big time this year, doesn't mean you question his ability. Trengove will be a great player, no doubt

The Good::

The players who excited us last year with talent or promise, yet had dissappeared early this season, are starting to show something again.

- Bail's run and spread and fearless attack on the contest

- McKenzie doggard determination to negate the oppositions stars and win or draw contested situations

- The Jamar-Moloney combination has shown signs of a resurrection

- Garland's poor form is showing signs of abating

- I think we've seen a flicker of what Davey used to have (some might disagree)

(not including Jones and Howe here, as they hadn't disapeared)

The Bad::

Disposal from the half back line continues to be our undoing.

- Grimes returns with 27 touches (yay) of which about 20 were delivered straight back to the opposition (boo)

- Joel Mac continues to struggle to hit the side of a barn under no pressure at all

- Tom Mc struggled, especially early

- Even Tapscott, who is a renowned good kick, was off in a big way

The Ugly::

Watts showed no signs of making any impact in the conditions. Needs to put the same endeavour that he puts into running, into competing when the ball is up for grabs. Added nothing this game, and should have been wearing the red vest. (I'm a fan though, and reckon he will hit back next week.)

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
