Should we have hired Sheedy instead of Bailey?

In Hindsight we could not have hired a worse coach than Bailey. Mad Kev was certainly well considered for the job but we passed. Would the likes of Green, Davey, Moloney and CO been better players with Kev at the helm or would they still be soft mamby pamby types and have forced Kev to resign out of frustration? Could our draft choices been more astute?

No.

Sheedy was well and truly cooked when he finished at the Bombers.

Just look at a pic of Sheedy then and a pic of Sheedy now.

He looks a hell of alot fitter now than he did then.

He needed a long break.

i must admit i was surprised when we didnt go for kev.

mind you i was impressed with bailey at first

we need one of those what if episodes like they did on scrubs to see what would have been the best path

Yes i heard him say not long ago he has had to get fit for the job again.

Still the "sliding door" thought has crossed my mind. Sheeds & Bailey?

I don't think Dean was the problem. I think the FD was totally dysfunctional, and any coach would have struggled. That we matched the Filth in 2010 was a credit to Bails.

Can someone please explain what happened between round 17 2010 and 186?

That was the day we were leading Sydney by 96 points and playing a premiership standard of football.

What the he'll happened as I honestly thought we were on the right track with Bailey!

Possibly/probably!

IMO Sheeds would not have built the list as quickly, but would have done more like we recruited @ the 2011 draft.

So IMO the Culture would be addressed & stronger by now. But we would have Less talent on out list that we still have to teach to become AFL players.

Welcome to Demonland.

No different to all the other discussions, like why didn't we draft Martin etc. Get a life.

No.

I said it was pointless.

I would love to hear your counter argument to "it's pointless."

Touche.

I think those posts were, at some point, a waste.

But they were very pointed. Naive, perhaps, but pointed.

Desiring a coach that we didn't get two coaches ago seems a stretch...

My god, imagine what Sheedy would have done. It would have been like Carlton when they topped up with midcarders. We'd be about two years behind where we are now - not entirely Bailey's fault that the drafting was pox as well - at least the Blues eventually got it right and managed to lure a star with dodgy money.

Things might not be up to much chop now but I can do without having enjoyed a stint of Aaron Henneman if it's all the same with you.

You'll find a number of 60+ point wins between those two points, and the same number of 60+ point losses. We were probably a finals side this year had the team not exploded against Geelong. What pushed the players to not care so openly and obviously essentially cost the man his job. We played some great football last year, and some absolutely horrendous football. I can't remember a team that has been so far ahead and so far behind at the same time. I think we were 3rd or 4th in average winning margin. It was there, but I feel it's been lost now. The club truly is a shambles.

Sheedy's strength has always been in motivating and managing people.

He is not a great coach by any stretch of the imagination, but that's why he has Choco Williams there to be the real coach.

He has always had a great team of assistants to do the coaching for him.

Mark Thompson, Mark Harvey, Dean Bailey, Matthew Knights, Terry Daniher, Neale Daniher, Robert Shaw, Alan Richardson, Gary O'Donnell, the list goes on.

Not all great head coaches, but at the very least accomplished assistants.

And really, that's what Malthouse has done too, although I think he knows the game better and is less of an accomplished spruiker.

Sheedy wasn't the right coach for us because we were a club without the profile, the resources and the money to give him what he needed to succeed with MFC.

Nor was Bailey, obviously.

Then again, maybe Sheedy would've been able to better sell tanking to the league, MFC supporters and the AFL public?

Since we were stuck in a position where that was the only option.

Making him the right coach, maybe?

In any case, pointless retrospection.

So we would be third last with no wins instead of fifth last with no wins.

Sheedy would have never acted in our best interests, only his own.

He wouldn't list manage and we wouldn't have had all those early picks. That we stuffed up some of them, is irrelevant. We would be 6 years behind if Sheedy took over, with an aging list of has beens and an outdated game plan.

Bailey, regardless of his win-loss record, acted in the best interests of our club, to take full advantage of the draft system, as he should have. He also developed guys like Martin, Garland, Petterd and Jurrah. He did the best he could under horrible circumstances of disunity at board level coupled with a garbage list.

He was never going to be the long term premiership coach, but he did his best to ensure we were half way there.

Neeld may not have inherited gold from Bailey, but he would have inherited a lot worse from Sheedy.

Bailey was on a hiding to nothing.

Unfortunately ,good games were celebrated on the turps by the senior guys and the next week we would be shocking .

There is no more nightclubbing under Neeld I imagine .

Good teams really dont need coaching-I've seen them before and the older guys do the coaching because they know their time is fleeting and they pull the youth into line .

I wonder if Sylvia and Beamer will look back and say "we could have been anything but we got a lot of skirt instead" .

Or have they had their crisis moment .

RDB? Not for us.

As I posted earlier

Could he have produced less than Bailey?

At least it would have been more entertaining over the trip.

Sheedy would have been worse IMO.

DB gave us a decent crack at list renewal; Sheed's track record suggests he would have persisted with older players and traded in recycled players.

Sheedy reportedly had a poor relationship with the players at Essendon, particularly the younger guys, and we wouldn't have been getting him for his game nous.

Apart from 'entertainment value' - and I don't want a Coach to play the role of jester - I can't see why we should have hired Sheedy instead.
