Personally, as a rule of thumb I think of it as being in the top 1%. There are roughly 800 players in the AFL so I would consider being in the top eight or so players as "elite".

Yes but what puts them in the top 1% Are you going to separate out different positions from one another, rather than lump all into the one group of 800. eg elite ruckman from elite back man

I suppose it's possible that there will be positions that have no elite players in the competition; for example, there may be no full back who could be considered as being in the top 1% of all players in the AFL.

That's open to interpretation, but I define an "elite" player as who I think is in the top 1%.

My point is, people are using the word "elite" when they are simply referring to a good player, I am saying that I would only reserve the word for the absolute very best in the competition.

By that definition, compared to the worst player in the competition, every other player is elite.

So if we define elite by the top 1%

If I go with an average of 40 players on a list, means we get 720 players or 7.2 so-called 'elite' players - I will round up to eight.

For me it's the All-Australian side and a handful of players on the fringe of it.

Well, the MFC doesn't really have to worry about the word at the minute...

One exception: Moloney was an elite clearance player in 2011 in my view.

Top 1%? I don't know.

All these measurements are subjective even if you can agree on parameters so in the end - who gives a flying?

You could argue that just to get on an afl list you are already elite, since the rest of us aren't good enough

Whilst the late Trevor Barker frequently took spectacularly high- flying marks , he played for most of his career with sub standard St Kilda sides , so to be honest , i don't think he regularly " influenced game results".

Elite players cannot be tagged out of a game.

Elite players can destroy an opposition single handedly

Elite players are rare.

There would be less than 25 in the whole comp IMO. And we don't have any.

Have we any that could be elite?

Sylvia could. Frawley could. Jamar could. But they're not.

The others its too early to tell.

Trevor Barker always gave his all like Robert Flower. He was elite. The Saints weren't.

Pretty close I reckon.

Basically an elite player can win a game for his side. Last elite player for us was Garry Lyon, who could win us a game by himself when he needed to. And I'm not talking about kicking a bag of goals.

The magnificent 1956 Melbourne Football Team was definitely ELITE.

For me it's the All-Australian side and a handful of players on the fringe of it.

In fact I'd narrow that definition down further and say two AA guernseys proves it's no fluke and puts you in the elite bracket.

ELAN comes before ELITE in the dictionary. Produce the former then the later will follow.
