Restoking a rivalry: Melbourne v Geelong

Apart from that main fight against the Filth, I believe we should try to rebuild this rivalry. It's a bit tough, what with the AFL scheduling us down at the Cattery every year without fail (can anyone remember if we ever HAVEN'T played them in Geelong? I certainly can't) but the two-cities battle is a good one, and one that really could resurrect based off the history of the clubs. Build it up every year as the Victorian city rivalry or something like that.

On a related note, if you drive down to Geelong, about a half hour before you get there there's a BP servo on either side of the freeway. They have there 3 flagpoles, aligned parallel to the road. The Geelong side has the Cats flag - a brand new one with the latest edition of the club logo. The centre one is the Australian flag, and the right one is a MFC flag - which looks like it's about 10-15 years old and is fairly battered (it's the one with the red and white face, the one that was used before the plain square). How would we go about getting the club to replace this - perhaps in the buildup to the clash this season?

I remember round 6 2006 when we beat them at the G on a cold friday night. Flash kicked a super goal from the boundary members side.

Dunn played well in his first game and kicked 2.

The next time we played them at the G was round 3 2007. Tommahawk ripped us apart. I was sitting with my mate in general seating and sat next to two of the most feral women I have ever come across. They even gave me [censored] about how the demons couldn't get a decent crowd.

It will be hard to restart the rivalry when we are on opposite sides of the development phase. We are coming up while they will be coming down.

Rivalries occur in September. You can't build them. That said the Cattery visits always jack me right off!

i would say that the tigers are a recent/modern rival despite the fact that we've both been out of the top 8 for years. i would say collingwood is a massive rival due to the Queens birthday match rather than meetings in september (the 50's was a LONG time ago).

the cats, even were they to free-fall would still be better than half the teams in the comp and i'm not sure if the dee's were to play up to expectations could say the same. this is a great rivalry that i personally have with my geelong supporting housemate. living on the gold coast he is always cut that he has to admit to potential league converts that MFC is the oldest team with Geelong 2nd despite the recent form of each side.

we always fly down each year to watch it live and its always a pity to see how few red and blue flags are in the crowd. so charter a helicopter to avalon, jump in a town car and slum it for a few hours and hopefully see the dee's get within 200

Queens Birthday is entirely a rivalry from that long time ago. Other "fad" rivalries come and go.

it's so much more than that now though...the rivalry has to build on itself, and grow otherwise you are quite correct they do fade away.

most importantly rivalries are made from close games, the draw a couple of years ago against the pies was one of the most hollow moments i've experienced watching sport. and that made last years showing so much worse, but makes me excited to see how we're going to bounce back this year.

when we play down at the cattery this year it should be dubbed as our lazarus game. our 2hours of redemtion, proving hopefully that this is a new era and shake off the ghosts of the past. you could link this to the age of the two clubs and a prodigal son style storyline. this would all lead to a well hyped pressure cooker environment where the most "skilled" team doesn't always win. give our kids a chance to prove they have ticker and can handle the heat well before any potential finals games.

Realistically our genuine rivals these days are our lowly peers like Richmond and any other lowly performing side. We have a long way to go before any top side would consider us genuine rivals. The Collingwood games are an anachronism with most filth supporters thinking that we are just a big yawn. Any real rivalry there is almost as distant a memory as our last flag. And it is a joke to consider the cats as rivals when we continue to play with tails between our legs against them and they punish us accordingly.

i agree buts its pretty hard to have a big rivalry at the Cattery when only 500-1,000 MFC Supporters can get in to the crappy ground!!

I remember going to the Cattery mtg up with some friends (demon fans) who bought seated tickets and they had to leave their seats due to threats as they sat amongst cat supporters at half time. We had drinks in a bar afterwards and witnessed a group of demon fans be beaten by cats fans and the security guards. The dee fans were not the aggressors yet the security guards still beat them. We noted the the security numbers on their shirts and made formal complaints and the GFC refused to hear us.

Will never go there again!!! It was like being a Muslim in South Carolina

Reckon any win against the Pies is no.1 . Closely followed by Essendon ( and not just because of 2000 ) . We have played them in a number of Grand Finals and it's always a great feeling to beat them . We have beaten Essendon in 4 Grand Finals .

In a year where we didn't have too many highlights (2011) that win against the Bombers is a standout for me . Their fans were all very confident before the game ( as usual ) and we beat them quite comfortably .

Demons/Cats rivalry ? Maybe , if as 'Wyl' alluded to , we play them in finals . I reckon the Cats will be in the 8 for a few years yet so it could happen .

We will have rivals i have no doubt, i just want them to be organic rather than set up. I think our main rival apart from the Filth will be Richmond and Hawthorn. But lets beat anyone in September and see who it is. Carlscum victories are as good as sex.....!

Ha ha ha ! And not forgetting the 2 GW$ games this year of course . Eagerly anticipated by all and sundry . 10 years of victories against that rubbish might satisfy Demon fans .

GW$ will be a different one. Traditional rivals are that because of hard fought blood and close victories. GW$ are just theives bankrolled by the Governing Body. I hope some of them lose their lives on the ground. Don't care who they play. That Gu$$y Allan I/V that was on the footy show still riles me.

When did we ever really have a rivalry with Geelong?

Back in the 1860's and 1870's . How quickly fans forget !

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k
