As so many have said -- hindsight is just a wonderful thing.

I can't be bothered trawling through all the post draft posts when $cully was recruited, but maybe you can, and can find and repost your response stating that is was so obviously wrong to pick up the lying, deceitful, di$loyal, mercenary, de$stabilizing, undermining, $cumbag as number 1 ??

Many of my $cully posts going back were actually deleted because it was said i was "stirring the pot" or PC words to that effect.

I wasn't as sure as Range Rover but not far behind. His demeanor and Body Language were never right.

That said i am glad i saw the Bulldogs game final quarter when his talents were on show. The kid can play. He just doesn't care where or how he gets there.

Who made a mistake? A mistake implies some kind of neglect of duties to me. It wasn't a mistake you are using the wrong word when you refer to this guy.

You can soften the word if you wish, but it only covers up reality. Considering it was a number one pick in a solid draft after 2 years of "list management" to be shafted the way we were. Blindsided completely. Neglect of Duties is a fair call i would say. LEARN FROM IT. GET BETTER.

There's a lot of carp about "the signs were there" and other revisionist rubbish.

Just see it as it was.

An unfortunate combination of events and circumstances that led to Scully getting an offer he couldn't refuse.

And a lot to do with timing.

If GWS hadn't entered the competition when they did, you'd still be canonising Scully's loyalty, work ethic and professionalism for the next decade.

There weren't any tell-tale signs we should have picked up on.

He is not inherently evil or disloyal.

In fact, that's probably something worth noting - although they are both often championed by all and sundry, LOYALTY and PROFESSIONALISM are in essence conflicting ideologies.

Not having a go at you monoccular, but I really dislike this expression. Hindsight is a pointless and futile exercise that achieves nothing. We need to be looking forwards, not backwards.

Edit: It's not so much the expression but the frequent use of it on these forums, no point driving yourself crazy over things that have already happened.

If it was an offer to good to refuse, which i suspect it was. Just say so. And do not openly lie for over a year.

You may see it differently and that is cool, but i do call that disloyal. Particularly when other team mates are fronting the journalist vultures and defending his integrity.

I couldn't do that to someone else. But $cully could. It takes a certain cold calculated persona to do that.

IMO that is where the mistake lies, and i am not suprised we missed it. Most would. But the end result must ensure the club becomes wiser going forward. I think that has already started so i am pumped. But to me $cully will always be remembered as a big mistake.

Those long Dustin Martin bombs do get me thinking "what if..."

All good and well if you're in a position of power within the club. We are supporters and have no input in recruitment. If people feel the need to beat their head against a rock about what could have been then thats their choice. the day we drafted him i turned to my housemate and said "i can't believe we just used our #1 pick on a kid with a pre-existing knee condition..."

seemed like a mistake at the time, and at the end of the day he's played a fraction over half the games he would have been available for if not for that same dodgy knee. that is the only real mistake i can see. who knows,

i don't like the fact that he lied all year, and i think that the business with his dad was beyond sickening as was demetriou's reaction to it, but if i was him and was offered 6mil knowing that my knee could give out at any moment i'm going to take it.

the general consensus seems to be that if we hadn't taken scully we would have taken dustin martin instead and whose to say sheedy wouldn't have gone after him in the same manner?

If Neeld took over in 2008, perhaps we would've got more wins, or less wins, and therefore different draft picks... so maybe we would've have got Trengove, or not been able to trade for Clark, taken Lucas instead of Gysberts... it goes on and on and on

Maybe having Bailey not do so well, and having the Geelong result, was actually a good thing for the club - a kick up the arse.

Lets just deal with our list now (which i personally am very happy with) and see what Neeld can do with it.
