Structure/Game Plan

I hear structure and game plan being thrown around a lot this year. Acknowledging we had no game plan last year what do you think will be our 'Structure' and 'Game Plan' for 2012 and beyond?

The structure will come, but first Neeld's plan will be to have a very fit side designed to be the hardest team to play.

Of course we had a structure & gameplan we were trying to get to over the last couple of years. But when building from the ground up, a side usually doesn't have the quality & experience to adhere to the plan and to maintain Focus and concentration all the time.

Now we are another year older and more games into young mainstays. And OUR focus clubwise is fully on starting the climb. Instead of just the rebuild part.

Now we are out of the Rebuild phase and fully into player development, & game structures IMO will be more important this Year, But Next I think will be really charging Into the Eight.

So to say we didn't have a game plan is being unkind to the people who gave their all.

Does the Lions have a gameplan? Does Port have a Gameplan? Does the Suns have a gameplan? Do the Crows have a gameplan? Or is it that they just weren't good enough, Yet?

Its very easy for Neeld to talk up "structure" and "game plan". He's also quick to say he doesnt know the players and what they can do yet. I find this somewhat alarming, because surley a structure and game plan revolves around the capabilities of a group of players? For example, i actually liked dean baileys "plan" when he used Aaron Davey behind the ball as the "designated kicker" , becasue he had superior footskills to the majority of the list at that time.

Neeld may know how he wants his team to play, but its yet to be seen wheather our players are fit, smart, talented and commited enough to play the way that he wants. If we arent, then Neeld will have to find a plan B for a year or two?

Basically i'll reserve judgment on Neeld until i see us play, but its one thing to talk tough and another to deliver on that talk

In the end it is not him and the coaching panel that runs out on match day.

I will keep my opinion on him till at least June however we have the same basic cattle as last year so I am not expecting a hugh improvement.

Just no more 31 goal losses please and few less 10 goals losses would be good.

More forward pressure, more skills and high percentage kicking and less of the high-risk high-reward half back rebound stuff I'd say.

Fair call, I agree that comment was un-fair and I retract it. I would say a different game plan and hopefully a more successful one. Good post.

Great to see positive posts like this on Demonland Shirtfront and Dee-luded.. We sometimes post thoughts and observations which can change when we consider others ideas as well. Good to see two mature posts without all the personal jibes and sad name calling that occurs on Demonland sometimes when people have different views. I disagree with the tenet of your view.

Neeld knows how he wants his team to play and will train the group accordingly. Why should he compromise his beliefs based on the players current capability ? If they can't or won't be able to implement his vision they'll be moved on. I'd much rather a poor year next year in preparation for real and sustained success than a coach that compromises his beliefs based on the players at his disposal. Besides, there's no reason the players won't be able to play the way he wants in time. It will take fitness and a dedicated mindset. If that's a bar too high then we may as well give up now.

And I still don't understand what you find "alarming". It's understandable that he doesn't know the players, or what they can do as he's only been there a minute. He's come to the club knowing how he wants us to train, how he wants us to play and how to get the best out of individuals. Do you expect him to take 3 months working out the strengths of his playing group and then set about working out his game-plan ? Young players are malleable and I've faith that they'll quickly ascertain what's required to deserve a game and more importantly keep getting picked.

I'm also led to believe that while Neeld's game-plan will be far more competitive than Bailey's it will also be easier to understand and implement.

''Right now the game plan, if there was such a document, is sitting in the top drawer. We will get that out later. This is about right now challenging the players in all aspects and getting them educated to understand that as a coaching group this is what we want,'' Neeld said.

''What is my broader philosophy? I was told with the media training whatever you do don't make a big statement, and so the first thing I said was 'I wanted to coach the hardest team to play against', so I failed media training. I want to coach competitors, I want to have a competitive team. So does every coach, I am aware of that, and my role is to instil competitors in the player group and to back it up with selection.''

The instruction is not one that favours open and attack, shut down and hold, boundary line or corridor, long kicking or fast handball. It is a broader football philosophy that the game is predicated on earning the ball in every contest.

''Watch the grand final,'' Neeld said. ''There was not a player out there you would not describe as a competitor. There is no room for non-competitors on grand final day. Contested ball is king. The ability to make quick, correct decisions under pressure over and over and over again happens on grand final day.''
