Almost every time there is a big trade the club that wins the services of the player appears to pay 'overs', long after mfc have dropped out. I would be happy to appear to pay overs in this case.

Can you trade next years first round pick to GWS as part of a deal. Even if we don't know what the pick would be, what is there to stop us having an arrangement that we give GWS our first round pick next year and they give us say their 4th round pick whatever it is and we give a compo pick and pick 12 this year and they give us back a slightly later pick to get O'Meara. Then we give pick in round 2 to get Viney being our highest pick as long as we have traded other compo pick or don't activate it until following year. Convoluted isn't it?

Doesn't work like that unfortunately- MFC will have to nominate Viney as F/S prior to trade week. Other clubs are then given the opportunity to also make a bid on JV, therefore if one club says they will take him with a 1st Rd pick then MFC will have to match it with a 1st Rd pick of their own, or risk losing him to the other club which has made a bid.

The bidding system is deliberately set prior to trade week to stop these sorts of dodgy deals from happening...

Pick 12, both Scully compo picks, Morton & Bate.

For both O'meara & Crouch??? Could work.

Let's throw Warnock in whilst we're at it! No, i'm serious!

Effectively Scully picks + Warnock for O'Meara, which has been mentioned before

Pick 12 + Morton + Bate for Crouch

The only downside to this is that we are going to need to wait a year to reap the rewards.

WIth Viney coming in along with O'Meara and Crouch, all we would need is to boost our tall stocks. We have plenty of cap space, so go after them in trade weeks to come, when we are really pushing for a serious tilt. Who knows, by that time Watts and Cook might be firing and Frawley, Garland and McDonald (of the Tom variety) might be holding down the fort very nicely.

No we have to give our next pick after the one offered by the other club. Clubs don't nominate for Viney until next year.

Imagine the change to our team if we added the names O'Meara, Crouch, Viney and maybe Stretch in the next couple of years. Sounding exciting when you remember who we got over the last few years minus one of course.

I don't think we could add "both" O'Meara and Crouch. We would only be a chance of snaring one Redleg.

Yeah but "having an arrangement that we give GWS our first round pick next year" doesn't actually trade the pick until trade week in 2012 which is after F/S nomination

Not true. Have to offer your next pick after whatever another club offered (which could be in the next round)

A ha.

We should ask the AFL for a one off exemption on the F/S rule, given the highly unusual and never happened before circumstance of our priority pick being taken by a new club with the AFL's imprimatur on the deal.

While you're in that asking mood, mention Bev and Nicky

Yeah, but if Viney would likely be a top 5 pick in the 2012 draft if it were not for him being available as a F/S selection (as has been widely predicted), then what are the chances that the MFC will be able to snare him with a 2nd Rd pick?

A club is bound to bid for him with a selection prior to MFC's 1st Rd pick, meaning MFC will have to match that bid with our own 1st Rd pick... You just need to look at what happened with the Bulldogs in both 2008 & 2010 with Ayce Cordy & Mitch Wallis, where bids from other clubs forced WB to use their 1st Rd picks- clubs aren't going to give MFC any more of an advantage in getting JV than we are already getting (by having access to him as a F/S pick) by letting us get him with a 2nd Rd pick...

Im fussy on this but believe daisy cutter is commenting on a situation in which we have traded our first round pick, and our next pick/ first pick is our second rounder.

I dont know if you can trade you first rounder in this case,

Would imagine it would have happened if it was allowable

Yeah that's what I was getting at with my first reply to Redleg- as the F/S nominating and bidding process from rival clubs happens prior to trade week, MFC will know whether or not they will have to use a 1st Rd pick on JV before trade week has even started.

That being the case, and assuming a rival club makes a bid for JV prior to MFC's first selection, MFC cannot then trade out their 1st Rd pick in an attempt to get JV with a 2nd Rd pick (even though technically that 2nd Rd pick would be MFC's 'first pick' in the 2012 draft).

Redleg, com'on, you've got Both, O'Meara and Crouch??? How are you going to afford both of them? We'll be lucky,,, In fact I doubt it, I suspect we won't push for O'Meara, but may look to the second local option, unless O'Meara goes for less than expected. Unlikely.

We may Bid, but won't get. Just watch and see.

Crouch or other?

I think we can, hope we can, but we'll still likely to use our comp' picks next year anyway. (hopefull) It gives us a good little buffer to spread our age group,,, with a second wave coming. Age wise between the bulk of our kids.

I started the post with"imagine the change to our team if" . I am not saying we will get one or both, but rather what it would do if we got both.

Herald Sun article sunday says O'Meara likely to go to GC, with us as only realistic alternative.

It is interesting as GC pick 4 this year in a compromised draft after 17 year olds have already been taken makes pick 4 worth about pick 14-16 in another year. Our first compo pick in next years draft for example will be 11, the pick before the eighth team. We also have pick 12 this year and another compo pick after our first pick in another year. IMO we are far better placed than GC to deal and get O'Meara and even Crouch.

We have two compo picks, pick 12 this year plus later picks and some big bodied players like Warnock, Bate, Dunn etc to play with.

Yeah, i had a look through the ladder to think of all teams likely to have something competitive to offer for picks against us and I also found surprisingly few likely to better us and Suns.

Since when was every 17yo GWS listed a top 10 prospect?

Posted

The advantage that we have over all the other clubs is that our two comp picks can be taken at any time over the next 5 years, allowing GWS to 'stagger' their draft picks more. Other clubs may also have a compo pick but I believe that we're the only one with two as Geelong used one last year.

Posted

Cant keep him, but have to trade 4 picks for 17 year olds over next 2 years and can choose to not trade picks this year, keeping him in next year's draft pool.

GWS does not select the player - the team receiving the pick chooses who they select (provided they are within the age bracket & have nominated).

Posted

Just to clarify, GWS must trade O'Meara? They can't keep him?

Apologies, I am late catching up with this Mini Draft.

They have to trade the four picks for the 'mini draft' sometime over the next two years, it could be two this year and next or all four this year or all any other combination you could think of. If they don't trade any of them this year they might be able to pick O'Meara up next year in the draft as they'll most likely finish last unless Port get a PP before them. Of course he might not even be the favoured no.1 choice next year, a lot can happen in 12 months.

But to clarify they're trading picks not players.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
