A lot of people wrote him off when he was injured, rivers as well, both have done bloody well to come back and become important members of the team.

The more I think about it, the more I convince myself that Beamer may just be perfect for the captaincy role. He has proven through is ability to rebound from what must have been a very humiliating experience with his demotion, that he can up his performance in the face of adversity (or in this case, the weight of captaincy that hit Green) and being a died in the wool Dees supporter all of his life, it MUST be his dream to lead the club and I am sure that would drive him to perform well above his current level. (he could have Jones and Garland as his deputies)

Despite the ups and downs, 2011 was a pretty good season for him overall, and statistically he was clearly our number 1 player over a number of key categories (clearances, disposals, contested possesions, tackles etc) . I couldn't be happier for the bloke... Yes, he is officially my favorite player at our club and has been for a number of seasons, because of his physical, bustling style and his great attitude and love for the jumper. At the moment he's our heart and soul on the field, but he badly needs more support from the likes of Green, Davey and Sylvia, and for Trengove, Gysberts and McKenzie to continue to improve, and quickly. More importantly, as our 'best player' we need Beamer to improve, and hopefully not stagnate as a player. I hope now that he is a club champion he doesn't just sit back and think "my work is done, i'm as good as i can be". I'm sure he won't, but i'm just saying... It's only just the beginning and we need him to lift and continue to carry the load until those younger guys can step up.

I believe next season, possibly as captain, there is no reason that Beamer can't come out a better, more consistent leader under Neeld's newer, harder-edged defensive game style. At the moment he's a very good player; an A-grader even. I believe his pace and acceleration has improved to the point where he is able to break free from stoppages on a fairly consistent basis now. He wins more clearances from ruck stoppages than any other player in the league. When left unchecked he can run riot and gather 30+ disposals fairly regularly, which few players on our list have been able to do in recent times. So he's a good player, our best even. Some areas need improvement though.

To become the damaging, dare i say "elite" player and strong leader we need him to be, he needs to get the ball more often (up his average from 24 to say 27-28 disposals per game), meaning running harder to provide options for uncontested possessions and marks, more consistently, and to hit the scoreboard. He kicked 9 goals this year, 3 of which came in round 23. He needs to double that. He needs to play better against the good sides and the gap between his best and worst needs to improve. No more disappearing acts. (Although it was interesting to hear him say in his interview with Matt Burgan that during his quiet patches at times he was playing a defensive team role and was freeing up other players.) He needs to learn to break tags effectively by pushing forward and being a dangerous option.

BM is apporaching what would now be his 3rd or 4th consecutive injury-free pre-season, meaning he's just about to peak. Some don't believe there is much improvement left in him, but I'm of the opinion he is only going to get better under Neeld, and if injury free, we'll see him up his output significantly over the next few seasons. I say this as when Collingwood and Hawthorn were like us, their better, mature players now, at the time (Swan, Mitchell) had seasons that mirrored the kind of years BM has had over the last 3. Averaged mid-low 20's disposals and only kicked a handful of goals. Then the team gets better, collectively things 'click' for many different reasons, and the output from those better player suddenly goes through the roof. If/when we improve next year and beyond, it will coincide with BM taking the 'next step' as a player. I suppose the same could be said of Jones or Sylvia, but despite lacking the marking ability and goal kicking of Sylvia, and the elite endurance and boldness of Jones, i think has a better understanding of the game or 'feel' for the game than both, better reflexes in close, strength, balance, and equal courage. He's the one who will blossom in my eyes. Although I hope all three do!

Once again, congratulations Beamer! You deserve it for the journey you've been on so far. I look forward to seeing you lead us from the front in the journey ahead.
