Matthew Warnock wants out

Featured Replies

I still think he is underrated. I would rather keep him than Rivers. Taller, Faster, can actually play on a forward. Imagine how Warnock could play if he had the luxury of not having to be responsible for a direct opponent like Rivers often does.

I'm struggling to see your point re: Warnock playing as a loose defender. His best attributes are his size and strengh, and he's a poor to very poor user of the ball (significantly worse than Rivers). Not what you'd look for in the loosish defender role.

Not trying to be a smartarse here - but does the fact that Rivers played 20 games this year and Warnock 4 make you wonder whether you've missed something?

Good luck to Warnock. I say we give his number to Jack Viney (it can collect dust for a year).

Is it Myles? To be confirmed...

Yep Myles Sewell it is.

I'd love to have both the Sewell brothers on our list.

Myles is looking a good thing to win the J.J. Liston Medal this year after another good year with North Ballarat.

He's turning 24 next year so still plenty of good footy in him.

Matthew Warnock has told melbourne he wants to be traded. I dont blame him. He is obviously frustrated with his lack of opportunity in senior level this season. He has only played 4 games. But I think our backline is something we have got right and is pretty settled.

Anyway best of luck whereever he ends up. Cant we send him to GWS as our only player they can have instead of scully.

Along with Bate & Dunn, a casualty of DB's reign - always first to be dropped after a loss, seemed to be the scapegoat for DB's complete lack of defensive strategy - I wish him well - he will get a chance elsewhere.

Interestingly, Chance Bateman is in a similar boat at the Hawks. He's struggling to get a game and could find himself out of the finals team given the form of some of the youngsters. What are the chances (pun intended) that we could do a straight swap?

Spot on Nasher..........Warnock hasn't been playing because he hasn't been the best available, and others have gone past him.

Can understand him wanting to move on, but really surplus to needs for us apart from depth.

I'd Just like to say thanks Matty.

He's been fantastic for the Dees and a great clubman. Maybe he should have gone last year, It may have been better for him.

I wish him all the Very Best.

chance bateman will be 31 nxt year, i think he will be considering retirement!!

Wow. I hadn't realised he was that old already. I guess we can rule him out then.

More logical that he goes to Carlton. He's as good a key defender as anyone they have and it would reunite the two brothers.

Straight swap for C. Judd.

Win/win.

lol.

Maybe they'll offer us an inside midfielder... McLean perhaps? :)

Wonder how much we here at Demonland will overrate Warnock? Anyone suggested Warnock for Judd yet?

Yet another Daniher duster ready to go.

Ba-bye!

Wow, really?

I think Rivers (along with Frawley and Garland) has been great this year.

I think Rivers is the most overrated player that I have seen in three decades of watching football. How he has played more games than Warnock is beyond me. He plays the easiest position on the ground yet he rarely stars.

He rarely is responsible for a direct opponent and he provides almost no attacking value. I can’t think of any other player in the league that has it so easy. I think Rivers would struggle to get a game at any other club.

He won the raising star as an older mature player in a weak year, and has been getting selected off it ever since.

Most weeks he plays loose because he cannot defend one on one. He is not capable of playing on a tall, a strong or a fast player. It was plain to see during the few times when he is given a direct opponent this year opposition teams isolate him because they know even in a poor side he is the weak link.

He has poor disposal, I believe that it is on par with Warnocks. He offers very little run out of the backline. He is not a marking target for kickouts. Opposition teams do not man up on him like other loose backman because he is no attacking threat.

The one thing that Rivers excels at is courage, he is not afraid to run back into a pack.He plays a loose man to help spoil and be the third man up. I believe almost any other player on the list could do this role, however they may also be able to defend or attack. Without being able to offer anything else, he is a liability in the team. I believe that Warnock could play the role Rivers does, but Rivers cannot play the role Warnock does.

So would I.

But you pick your battles. This may not be the trade to get us some mature bodies.

Warnock's currency is rather small...

Sorry RPFC but with the hand we have at the table I reckon his currency is high to very high. Big strong bodied defender who dominates at AFL level, did well against a monster in Tippett and has played some very handy games for us. If the Hawks want him IMO a trade for either Sewell,Birchall or Suckling would be acceptable. All non key position and the Hawks have heaps of them. Leave Ellis and a few others alone , one of these three would be ok. Otherwise let the bidding begin.

Xavier Ellis? Can't think of too many other decent hawks they'd be willing to give up.

I think we would want way better than that for Warnock.

Good luck to Warnock. I say we give his number to Jack Viney (it can collect dust for a year).

No, No, No and hell No!

#1 is a poisoned challis. It should be retired forever! It can collect dust forever!

Warnock would have been better of sticking to his original number (whatever it was)!!!!!

Xavier Ellis? Can't think of too many other decent hawks they'd be willing to give up.

I'd love Xavier Ellis but Warnock doesn't even get close in trade value.

He struggled under pressure, poor decision making and not flash below his knees...probably the same as 80% of all AFL players.

I would be happy to trade him to Carlton for Hampson and maybe swap our third round picks.

Always knew this would happen. He can command a regular spot in many other teams who need a big defender who defends first and foremost.

People asking for Ellis need to think again, do we need another outside player with average skills who is not bog bodies or tough?

We have many holes to fill and Ellis is not going to fix any of our issues.

Need some bigger bodies midfielders like Sewell, but cant see him leaving Hawthorn or someone with great skills or a key forward. Not sure who we can get though.

Haha was thinking the same thing.

If only we didn't stuff up that Ferguson trade!

I dont think it was us that stuffed up that trade. I hitnk Sewell was happy to come it was Ferguson that refused to leave. More fool him. That was a stupid decision.

I think this is one example (there would no doubt be many) of where a mid season draft would have been beneficial for both parties.

I can see the reasons for leaving him out. But at the same time i think he at least deserved a 3 - 4 game run leading into the West Coast game to see if he'd improved or matured a little from his many games with Casey and to match him up on those teams we were up against late in the season with multiple talls. Maybe the recall could have been spasmodic to suit who we were playing, but i think he should have been given this chance IMO just to be sure he hadn't improved in some areas before he parted ways.

I would also be worried if Frawley got a serious injury next year as to who we would try to bring in to cover. Matty had the mature body and enough experience to cover in the short term (ie., not another rookie), without the run, skills needed and poise of course. But I certainly didn't see anyone on Saturday who would be up to it either, with the exception of maybe Mohr, but i don't think he's on our list.

Had a good look at Matty on Saturday and he played a reasonably solid game without standing out, although he wasn't alone there as the Scorps defense was put under immense pressure. Was always going to be a tough day once we started losing the mid field contest.

Seems like a good club man and appears to be in good nick and very fit. Might be a handy pick up for GWS for a few seasons as a part time defender when the young boys are being rested etc. Good luck to him wherever he goes from here.

We have young McDonald and Davis as our back up defenders, who need the opportunity to play and develop, we dont need Warnock for depth.

I'd love Xavier Ellis but Warnock doesn't even get close in trade value.

Economis - Supply - not a lot of big key defenders available, far more medium type on ballers. Demand - Most clubs need big key backmen from the GWS/GS through to some top clubs who need players of this type to fix/finalise their structure. B and C grade midfielders like Ellis are a dime a dozen. Confirmation of this is close at hand.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
