The Tom Scully Saga

Firefly was so beautiful...and it makes me sad just thinking about what might have been.

I have a gut feeling we haven't seen the last of the Firefly/Serenity universe.

Look it doesn't matter where he plays if he wants to be rich, all being well, he will be rolling in cash when his footy is done. It would be better to remain with us , get a premiership or 3 and push off to another club and cash in, fresh challenges etc etc ala Ablett. Just like Barrassi really!! his numbers sake!! But he would have already earned a truck load with us anyway with more sponsorships available here in melbourne.

Having said all that, I wouldn't blame him for grabbing the loot early on in his career and playing in front of a few thousand at the very famous!! Rooty Hill but personally I think he would want the big time at the G !!! well, I'm hoping so anyway!!

Let it go. It is gone. It will never return. Too good for this sinful earth.

I didn't hate how that all ended up. The movie was really a very good adaptation of the TV show, and gave us what we would have seen had the show just stayed on... only in a bittersweet two hours instead of 4-6 years.

Jeez. How did it come to this? Isn't this a Tom Scully thread?

The movie was only done after the fans outrage of the show's sacking, the producers were basically forced into going back and finishing the story. The series had everything a Sci Fi fan could ask for, the last episode was brilliant and I was devastated that it didn't even last the first series. I'm amazed how a show of that quality gets axed will others like Farscape go on for series after series.

/sigh

Back to topic, there's been a lot of discussion about the fact that Tom has already signed. I want to stop that crap for good, have no idea what he will do or if he has signed a HoA but he definitely has not signed. My source you ask? The AFL, have a look at he rules...

Team GWS to have capacity to sign up to 16 uncontracted players. Maximum of one player from other AFL clubs, unless a club agrees to trade more than one player to Team GWS. If the club does not sign 16 uncontracted players after the 2011 season, it can sign the balance of up to 16 players at the end of the 2012 season.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/86738/default.aspx

GWS can't sign up players until their current contract finishes, that's the rules set by the AFL.

As you were

Scully and Trengove will win a few flags together I reckon. And what will that make them?

Big. Damn. Heroes.

This article really worried me.

I was either reading between the lines with Sheedy's comment, or ready too much into it.

After saying that GWS has signed the midfielder that they were after...

""I've never met Scully but sooner or later I will. I wouldn't know if he's what we're after," Sheedy said.

"That's the job of the recruiting department"

Ignore the belligerent, cheeky, conniving ways of Sheedy. Seriously. Otherwise you'll do exactly what he wants you to - think about what he says way too much.

Bear in mind that they are not able to sign anyone right now. There was a specific window last october when they were able to sign players. Otherwise, they have to wait until after the season. If he's claiming to have already signed someone, then they signed a contract last year. Since Tom strikes me as a man of significant integrity, I do not believe that he has been lying all this time when saying that he has not spoken to them and has not signed anything. Therefore they are not able to sign him until after this season and any claim otherwise is just hot air.

What's Sheedy going to say?

"We've actually struggled to get the guys we want, but we're sure we'll manage to find someone good..."?

He can hide behind the fact GWS can't name someone even if they have signed.

It's all about drumming up interest and creating a perception.

And some are obviously more easily fooled than others...

Could be a heap of people, funny this comes up after Scully supposedly wants out....of his heads of agreement thing etc

Could just as easily be Daisy or anyone

love that the coach hasnt met a prime "marquee" type signing lol if its Scully

Last October as In when Scully cut short his China trip to rush back home?

This actually made me feel good. As people have said - Scully wouldnt be blatently lying if he has signed. I dont think its a marque player but a hard in and under player - one that they couldnt get by drafting kids.

But the speculation will be interesting over the next few weeks.

Schwarz just said on Gameday that he's heard from the right people at Melbourne that Scully is gone.

I got the impression Mark Robinson thinks Melbourne's still confident they can keep him.

Not sure how much info Schwarz actually gets from the club anymore however. In his book he says himself he hardly has any friends left at Melbourne.

Edit: Added last line.

Schwarz on Gameday, ch 7

"I'm 98% sure Scully's gone. I've heard from the right people that I trust."

Bit of a worry that a Melboune man says that on TV. If he's gone I don't want to see him in the red and blue for the rest of the year.

Yeh seemed convinced real worry

Schwartz is seriously the worst person at predicting things, plus he is hardly ever around the footy club anymore plus what didnt Scully say something like he wants to be a one club player plus Mr Trengove said last night on before the game he belives Scully will stay in the Red and Blue!!!

Just listened to Schwartz's comments re: Scully being 98% "gone" balanced by Mark Robinson's opinion that Melbourne confident he will stay. Anyway, the thing has Sheedy payback written all over it for being rejected for the Melbourne coaching job. Otherwise why poach a player who is still a 'potential' champion?

Don't see how Schwarz could possibly be "98% sure" Scully is gone. That, to me, would mean Schwarz knows for a fact that a contract has been signed. I doubt that is the case and Mark Robinson (who would know more about it than Schwarz) seems to think he will stay.

Having said all that, it's not much fun hearing the constant rumours that he is a goner. Lots of media people sharing their thoughts on the matter saying he's gone - hopefully it's just pure speculation and nothing concrete.

if he can "trust" them and they are for melbourne you would expect that they can "trust" ox not to going spreading it all over live tv. Load of crap I reckon.... any one with half a brain from the club who actually had real info would know not to tell him. As someone stated in the beamer reinstatement thread, it seems as though we are a well run club who don't leak things. Why would we tell a prominent media person who is known to make up facts?

Tom Scully is gone.... He signed a major deal with GWS when he went home, midway through the china trip. Tom Scully is a Liar, it's a done deal.... :(

There's no reason not to get a deal done with the MFC if he plans to stay.

The constant speculation takes his focus away from his football more than contract negotiations would.

What else is he going to say other than he hasn't spoken with them?

If he came out and said he signed he would be treated like a leper at the club, and probably wouldn't be playing seniors.

Very easy to come out and say at the end he wanted to stay but he couldn't say no to the money on offer.

He's gone, and as Schwarz said, time to turn the attention to compensation!

So he is calling Scully a liar? Forgive me but I'll take Scully's word over Andy Maher or any of his "impeccable sources".

I'd like the journalists who keep saying Tom Scully has signed and is going to GWS to stand in front of him and tell him he's lying when he says he and/or his management haven't spoken with or signed anything with GWS. Try telling him to his face he's lying.

I really, really want Scully to be a man of his word.

I wish their was some more evidence to say that he is.

If Schwartz had come out and said, "I have good evidence to say he is staying, I'm 98% sure" we would all be saying thank god...

This sucks.

  • AFLW REPORT: Port Adelaide

Well, that was a shock. The Demons 4-game unbeaten run came to a grinding halt in a tense, scrappy affair at the sunny, windy Alberton Oval, with the Power holding on for a 2-point win. The Dees had their chances—plenty of them—but couldn't convert when it mattered most. Port’s tackling pressure rattled the Dees, triggering a fumble frenzy and surprising lack of composure from seasoned players.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.
