GOOD Friday....

Recommended Posts

Your original comment spoke of an imaginary friend. You questioned his historicity. Compared to other historical figures the quality of documentation of is far superior and more prolific. You do not know the subject well enough. I am not stating the others are not historical but there is absolutely no questioning Jesus historicity and the documentation to verify it. I grant you the freedom to do with it what you want, burn it spit on ityour privilege. But imaginary?.silly,

No idea what you are talking about Harrison. I never mentioned anything about imaginary friend

You have mixed me up with some other poster

Oh, and you are starting to rave like a zealot. Take a deep breath.

Harrison, you are entitled to your opinion but you go overboard in suggesting people adopt your "way" or intimating that you have some knowledge or awareness of the spiritual realm that others do not.

I've said nothing about non Christian people doing anything. You are the one pushing football loving Christians to play, support, administer, coach, whatever? on this one day. You have 5 of the 6 days holiday (4 of 5 in other years) already playing football. To me that is so unneccessary.

You're kidding aren't you ... People have choices. If there's a bad movie you don't like playing at the cinemas, don't go and watch it. If you get invited to your mother-in-law's for dinner but can't stand her, don't go. Likewise, if there's footy on Good Friday, exercise your democratic and religious right not to show up. Get it?

The previous poster is right, you are sounding more and more like a religious zealot with each post.

Bit of a challenge taking on several at once. Sorry if I mixed you up with someone else. Don't you like someone speaking up for what they believe in? I never started this 'Good Friday is boring so lets fix it with a game' thread.

P.S. The documentation of Jesus of Nazarene compared to other contemporary figures of history could hardly be described as being superior in quality or of being prolific. The date of birth and death are not recorded, nor is his age or most of his life.

I think your the one who doesn't get it. Your examples are all individual experiences. Football is a communal happening, which includes players, through officials, administrators and supporters. Supporters can make the choice, but others participating cann't. You are wanting to tell them what to do.

Essentially that's the story of evolution, which I and many Christians support.

Yes and why i will always say you are involved with imaginary friends until the day my energy expires. The "Good Book" as it is referred to is so badly written, you believe it because you are petrified of impending mortality. A rock is not a human, it is a rock.

The best way to pull apart a certain belief is to know a far bit about it Harrison, so please do not infer that i do not "understand" your (and many others) passion. I look for facts, which the Book does not have many at all. It is the greatest Fairy Story of all, and sadly will ultimately be the downfall of this human race, but in the meantime the Demons & the Saints must play some games on "Good Friday" night,

I am far more interested in raising funds for the RCH as i spent many years visiting there.

Actually, I think everyone in this thread loves that. Only one person started this thread, but we're all participating in it, which I think is great. Nobody's forcing you to "take on" anyone. We're not ganging up on you. We just all happen to have similar opinions, even though they're different from yours. As an aside, do you think it's wrong for the NRL to play a game on Good Friday?

EDIT: WYL - that's not cool. Harrison's free to believe what he wants. Why would you assume you know why he believes in the existence of God? And religion won't be the downfall of the human race; extremism will be. The Bible has facts about good ways to live your life with others. It may or may not explain why we're here, but it does provide a great way of bringing people together in support of one another (but only when those people are sensible enough to see when dogged belief is dangerous). I may agree with you about Good Friday footy, but I don't agree with your disrespect for Christians' relationships with God.

And as for Little Goffy, were you offended by the movie Angels and Demons? Religion is part of our culture, and belongs to no-one. How is using the concept of the battle between good and evil so that money can be raised for charity and people can have a good time "cheapening" anything? The day is sacred to some people, but not to others. Regarding the "just as bad as" quote, what you and Harrisonrules are both doing is forcing your beliefs on others.

You may view religion as something sacred that must be respected at all times. I view it as a part of human culture that can be responsible for a lot of positive things for individuals and society. I'm supporting a day where people can be happy for a few hours raising money for a great charity. This just happens to tap into one aspect of culture that a few people believe they "possess."

There we go again with me apparently being offended by everything.

Should I be proud that in the same thread I've copped flak for being an 'atheist who is offended by harmless personal beliefs' as well as for being excessively sensitive about preserving the integrity of personal spirituality?

Let's see if I can illustrate my point again;

- I have no problem with personal beliefs.

- I dislike the imposition of particular religion on secular events.

Combining the two, I don't feel that a pretty trivial God-themed game would be an appropriate event. My grounds are;

- that I feel that this representation it is a little disrespectful of the intimate relationship some people have with their faith at this time, acknowledging that Easter is by far the most important event in the Christian 'spiritual calender'.

- and that having a Religious-themed imposition is quite irritating for those who have experienced other people's religion to be a continuous pest intruding into their lives.

Anyway, rather than Angels and Demons, what really offends me is the later movies in the 'The Mummy' franchise. I mean seriously, sure the first one was an nice enough amusing little adventure romp, but really, Scorpion King 2? And Tomb of the Dragon Emperor? Why would you make a movie if you aren't even going to try? Lowest-bid special effects, cliche lines that don't even reach the heights of a dialoge, and the casting... dear oh dear. I mean, both movies deliver like nobody bothered developing anything more than the 'story-board' sketches, and just walked through the paces to get it done.

What I'm trying to get across here is that while I am putting forward an opinion, I am not sitting here sweating blood from my stigmata about it.

I like to picture Jesus in a tuxedo T-Shirt because it says I want to be formal, but I'm here to party.

I like to think of Jesus like a dirty old bum. He's comin' up to me, and I'm 'bout to sock him one, cause, you know, he's a dirty old bum, but then I say, "Wait a minute, there's something... I don't know, special about this guy."

I like to think of Jesus like with giant eagles wings, and singin' lead vocals for Lynyrd Skynyrd with like an angel band and I'm in the front row and I'm hammered drunk.

Stadium Christian Rock i always find a great dichotmy!, although i am sure that Joyce Money Bags from the Hillsong church would always aprove.

Well Well look at this, one of the Fat Controller's new love interests wants to play on GOOD FRIDAY!!! What a suprise.....So Vlad's Main Religion is in fact not christian but it is as i thought the Religion of $$ CASH $$, which is probably understandable considering that these 2 new soulless Franciase's will cost us all a fortune for the rest of my life and beyond.

If there is a game to be had in sydney, then the Demons & Saints should do the same down here.

GWS want Good Friday....

George Pell would revive his junior boxing career and step in for bouts on Good Friday for the kind of money at stake in GWS!

Which is ok, because the Bible, in guiding people's way of living together, as far as when to play football or not, only says to put people to death for working on the Sabbath. I think Good Friday is still in the clear. Christ I'm glad we don't play any games on Sunday, eh?

And that is the grand total of all objection I'm going to raise on that book, except to point out that what you'll find in there for 'living well' is either cliche and platitude or borderline psychotic. "And he who refuses to take hi brother's widow as his wife shall have his sandal pulled off, and be known thereafter as 'he who has had is sandal pulled off'"

Right. I'm over it. All good. Sorry 'bout that.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
