Watts v Hurley

Range Rover

Recommended Posts

I dismiss watts first 2 seasons because the 1st one he was still doing year 12 and then a another season to settle in.

Im sick of people putting the kid down. I know he will be a good player but fowards need development. Its because Nic Nat isnt doing much so the media think who can we compare Watts with next.

I will tell you another reason why I want Watts over Hurley. Watts would never assualt a taxi driver.

That is certainly true. Reading some of the tripe on here thought I think he'd be ready to strike someone.

I'd rather a player that has a mean streak about them and puts fear into the opposition than what we're getting at the moment.

I seriously cannot wait for how satisfying it will be in 2 years time, bringing up all these threads.

And once Watts breaks out, and becomes twice the player Hurley is, the guys who payed him out endlessly will say they've learnt their lesson, until the next unsuspecting teenager 'earns' their wrath haha.

Watch Watts go down in the same category as players written off to early- including Frawley, Garland, Bail, Sylvia from our team... and players from other teams including Dawes, Goddard etc. At least he'll be in good company.

For someone who occasionally posts well that's a silly post. We all wish Watts well and hope he'll become a great. No-one would be disappointed and we've all seen the talent. I was an advocate of drafting him having seen him play live a number of times at the u18 champs.

He's coming from a long way back. Not so far back that he won't be a good player, but I'll be amazed if he becomes the star the club earmarked.

Hannabel I agree 100% I am just hoping for good player now!

Gerard Healy on 3AW suggested that MFC would be derelict in their duties if they didn't seek out Brereton, as a mentor for Watts.

He suggested that Watts talent was undeniable and that should he not make it, it would be a mark against the development team at MFC rather than the recruiting team. Again reiterating his call for MFC to call on Brereton.

Watts was being given a game on potential rather than form was also mentioned.

Spoke well on all fronts and it is obvious that someone like that is needed for Jack. Agreed with all he said.

Totally agree with this.

Get on to it Demons...Now is the time to bring in some mentoring.

That mark & goal in round 2 showed that Jack Watts can be a class act, he just needs to up his application.

I am still having nightmares about that pre season news article written on him and his "laconic" attitude to losing.

I am not prepared to write him "on" but you are 100% right on writing "off" and the players you mention ( except Col who still is hot and cold) really shows that you have to give players time to develop before making rash write off calls.

One of the great influential forwards to play the game - smart footballer. As you mentioned about Malthouse - anyone who cant see that doesnt have a clue.

Are you serious?? You obviously never saw the "kid" play. Sure i hated him, but only coz he was that good.

Watch the '89 Grand Final again before any further comments on here C & B.

Dermott would be a perfect mentor for Jack "Charlie" Watts.

I mentioned what about who?

Mentoring pfffft just sit down and have a nice chat with Derm and I'm sure he'll be as hard as nails and kicking bags in no time, what a joke

You really do not have a clue if you believe what you have just written.

Astounding!!

The role of the right mentor as a coach (not just a chat) can be pivotal to so many careers in any situation.

Apologies - it was roost it who made the malthouse comment - not you.

I still stand by the fact that if we are trying to develop JW as a CHF having Dermott mentor him on the niceties of the position would be a good thing. We have ruck coach, forward coach, midfield coach - to have one of the games great CHF's coach Jack could only help his development. ( and yes, he is a nob - but a fantastic footballer)

just think that type of thing is garbage, he has coaches already, he knows he has to play with passion and play to get hurt if he is ever going to be any good. He doesn't need that [censored] pontificating at him, he ust needs to HTFU and sooner rather than later please

ok then since you clearly know the ins and outs of this discussion tell me exactly what is involved in a mentoring role, does Dermie put on the boots or what, do they have a few rounds in the ring?

load of shyte

Watts is the only one who can make Watts work

Centre Half Forward - the role he is being groomed for - is acknowledged as the hardest position on the ground to play. To get insight on positioning, running, timing of leads, how far to lead up and back - from one of the greats of the game is just adding some extra education into him - there is consensus from most that JW at times looks very lost. As an alternative I also wouldnt mind a certain ex player who wore the no 5 to offer his services. What is being suggested here is not revolutionary and has been done many times before. Interestingly that whilst mid, forwards and backs have a generic coach, the ruck coach is specialist to that position and always a ruckman. I can see benefits in having a champion key position forward teaching not only Watts but Cook as well ( and Dunn)

when Dermie played CHF it was a completely different game, what information does he have for Watts over a latte

Can we have a thread on Mark Robinson v Caroline Wilson.

I don't like Caro; I hardly ever read anything she writes ...

She still gets my vote ahead of the buffoon.

the whole Dermie discussion is pretty far fetched IMO, so i can see why C&B is shrugging it off.

Firstly, for it to work Dermie would have to have some sort of reason to want to be Jack Watt's mentor and IMO it would need to be more than just cash (which Im guessing he has enough of to keep him happy). For dermie to really be the mentor that people are talking about he'd need to spend alot of time with Watts, and would need to persist with him for a couple of years id say. Cant see why Dermie would bother with all that effort? He'd be asked about the process and JW's progress on every pannel that he sat on in the various TV programs, and what if Watts showed no improvement? Plus Dermie being a natural footballer doesnt equate to him being able to teach it to others

Secondly, what kind of a slap in the face would it be to the current coaching group & support staff at the club? It would be an admission that our own coaching staff arent good enough to extract the talent from a number #1 draft pick?

Thirdly, if Watts needed such a level of coaching/mentoring where the team of coaches, support staff and past players are not enough then he either doesnt have the talent we think he does, or he doesnt give a crap about footy. I think the club would be better served getting the Ox, Neita or another one of our great forwards to "mentor" him, if infact it is even requried.

A well made point that is very wrong.

If you've read recently at all you may have noticed the Jobe Watson/Greg Williams story.

Was that a slap in the face of any kind to any coaching group? Hardly, Williams was able to offer further expertise in an area he excelled.

As could Dermott, or someone else of similar quality on the field. A Kernahan might be good for Jack as he has a similar frame.

But no, lets just continue to look within and only employ those that have worn red & blue. Surely your not serious with that comment?

Certainly some benefit from Ox and Neita could be appropriate but I'd like to see a voice outside the club. Someone that knows success inside out.

I was only responding to your average comment, not the entire population.

But continue to allow others to get the words out for you if that is how you choose. I'll remember to pay scant regard in future.

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
