It was ridiculous, as could well be guessed.

For instance, Mark Stevens came out with this gem:

It's so important to start well. In the past their Round 1 matches in particular have been disastrous. Massive, massive game v Sydney week one. Lose by 5-6 goals and the blowtorch is on already

Yeah, that's why after our mega-loss to hawthorn we struggled against Collingwood and fell into wins for the next few games.

Really set us back.

Fool.

Followed by this pearl:

Couldn't agree more Josh. This first round game v Sydney is MASSIVE. I know the club will play it down as worth only four points, but it is worth a lot more than that. Stuffinf knocked out of team early on last year v Haw. Time to show something at home.

Once again, check out our 5 games following that.

Yep, major setback. MASSIVE.

This was mildly interesting:

I know the Dees really like the look of Tapscott. He kicks it beautifully. Speaking to Bails last week, he said the kid kids "three irons". If you're kicking wedges and seven irons you're in bother.,

We haven't won a game in the first 2 rounds of a season since 2005.

I think that's it understandable that many of the media pundits are now predicting Melbourne to miss the top eight this year (e.g Mike Stevens). Assuming that they base their opinions largely on what Melbourne has shown so far in the pre-season then its hard to back them into the eight, although some still have us in just scraping in. Yes we can say that out pre-season last year wasn't the greatest indicator of our form during the first 5 rounds (Hawthorn match excluded) and from the reports coming from last weeks match we were looking pretty good during the first half. Because of this I have tempered my expectations a little based on what I have heard/read of our performances and the loss of Frawley is hurting our defence at this stage. However, I think its difficult to judge how the Dees are tracking until you've seen them play at the 'G where they always seem to reserve their best footy for.

So bring on Round 1 (and 2 and 3) so we can stop speculating and finally see whether all the hype can be deliver on! :)

all i can say is i remember us beating the reigning premiers north melbourne in 1997 in round 1, and we all know how that season turned out.

That was the game when Carey did his shoulder. So funny. I remember laughing so hard. What great memories.

Win the opener then the 2nd ,I believe we are certainties for the finals.

One idiot posted that in the feed and Stevens said he'd check on that.

He never mentioned it again.

I'm sure if there was even the slightest hint of truth in it, he'd have found out and there'd be a Hun fluff article about Sylvia being in doubt for round 1.

Relax and worry about things that have actually happened...

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
