"put your hands in the air and give me all your money - if nobody moves, nobody gets hurt".

Self interest ! I reckon Daniel Bell acted in self interest when he told the club "don't give me a contract - I want to retire and not play AFL again even though I am in my mid 20's".

This is a professional sport - and as emotional as we become the bottom line is that the club acts with self interest and the people who put on the show, the players act with self interest as well. There is certain demand and supply factors that come into all negotiations and we supporters should hope that there is an acceptable mid point of self interest of the club and the players. When players opt to leave for better pay or conditions - aka - Cam Bruce, the self interest of the player has outweighed the self interest of the club. When we said tata to Cheney, McDonald and Miller the self interest of the club outweighed the self interest of the players.

Its not really brain rockets surgery science.

You're right Nutbean. It's all about finding that middle ground between two parties. Bit of give, bit of take.

Velocity Sports saying "we're going to wait until the end of the year to see how much we can bleed you" is too much take.

Is it?

Since that's what I was alluding to.

Which is still a play on the terms "rocket science" and "brain surgery".

Must I dumb everything down for people to understand the meaning..?

Oh you 'dumbed' it down, don't worry about that.

Nothing short of I have re-signed will placate many supporters

" I love the Melbourne football club" ( then why dont you sign now ?)

" My management will work with club in the fullness of time to structure a deal to keep me at the MFC" (then why dont you sign now ?)

"I would love to be one club player" ( then why dont you sign now ?)

For some supporters who fail to grasp that negotiation is a two way street and should be handled delicately, professionally and with maturity, they will be satisfied with nothing short of "I have signed".

Apologies if there was any confusion.

My reply was not directed at you, but at the reply to my post sitting just above.

And you are correct, but it does not make it any more intelligent for them to think like that.

Raise the bar, people!

Sorry to ask again, but can someone provide me the link to the specific tweet?

I'va I believe this is the tweet, that may have been misconstrued as meaning a presser to say he's re-signed by some on here:

".Scully should play next week. If he does, is likely to break silence in lead up to game with "all-in" press conference. Good call by Dees.

8:28 PM Feb 24th via Twitter for iPhone "

So you think the club will roll out Tom Scully so he can essentially repeat what his manager has already said. If they do this the media and fan frenzy will only increase, by a large margin. Can you explain how anyone benefits from Tom doing this.

No Range Rover YOU are the one wanting to hold Tom Scully to ransom to sign his contract now. You are the one who cannot sleep.

Tom Scully is a MFC contracted player till the end of October 2011.

He is well within his right to not sign ANY contract until then. There are too many variables that could occur between March & October to sign now.

I want him to stay a one club player-but i have no problem with him not signing until after the season ends.

If the Demons play good footy this year hopefully Tom Scully will WANT to stay.

You Range Rover ( i can't call you RR, that name is taken!!!) are obviously still learning business dealings.

I hope you are right but I get the feeling we will be sitting here saying 'oh FFS'

let me ask you this - if the club intends to make a 'Scully commits!' event, complete with hugs from Jimmy, panties thrown on stage, the works, how can they plan such an event if they don't know they are going to reach satisfactory terms sometime this week? If they haven't had the discussion how do they know Scull isnt going to ask for $1M a year which they can't afford. Then it's a massive backfire of a press conference isn't it?

Yours is a myopic view that doesn't take into account the special circumstances of Scully's particular case.

I have plenty of experience in business. Eddie McGuire, who lit this flame and fanned it, has got you all bluffed.

Scully has no special circumstances-You just want to have your life sorted.

I know exactly what Eddie is doing, & he was out of line. But it still does not change a thing

Tom Scully is well within his rights to sign NOTHING until seasons end.

Example...What would happen if Tom did the sore knee next week, what would happen to your contract negotiations then?

It is YOU who are putting extra pressure on him not i.

The post above nutbean's and yours, that directly quoted my post...

I think they might.

I honestly don't think it could possibly be more of a frenzy unless he declines to discuss it.

It may even be a more direct response from Scully, saying "I want to stay at Melbourne and don't want to go to GWS."

In reality, that will placate some of the maddening horde, but beyond that it would not hurt his negotiations.

GWS would still be happy to talk to his management & try to change his mind, MFC would still have to wary of this and would need to negotiate with him fairly (as I'm sure they will anyway).

In the end:

People are stupid.

People are unrealistic in what they want from him.

Nothing he says will change that.

Eddie is deflecting the bright light off his own patch. I don't think it will make any difference as Gubby Allan is working for GWS.

But supporters like yourself are keeping the Frenzy Burning, because you have no patience-So yes i know what Eddie is doing.

Gee, I wish I had that much influence on proceedings!

I think there's more to it than that WYL. In Melbourne, Eddie quite rightly sees a threat on the horizon and he's seen an opportunity to put some hurt on us.

If this were a game of chess (which in many respects it is), he's aggressively put us in a check position while we fumble around trying to protect our king with pawns. Sometimes, you've got to go right back at 'em and be prepared to trade queens.

I am sorry but i fail to see the Fumblings by the MFC...you have no idea of any MFC strategies. Why trade Queens when you do not have to? That wastes Energy Rangy.

Eddie may want us to attack, sure. But i still think our Board will stand up when needed. Sometimes in a game of chess it is also good to wait for your oponents to expose themselves before going in for the kill.

I got my money on Jim and Schwabby-"swim under the surface until you need to come up for air"

The club's had plenty of time to deal with Scully and his management and could well have come to an agreement with him by now. Friday's event is intriguing. I just think the current board is too smart to roll out their star young gun so he can essentially repeat what his manager has already said. What would that achieve, besides putting Scully under increased pressure. Personally if he doesn't commit to the club on Friday I think he's gone and that will be the first time I've thought that since this all began.

The club is currently run by some smart and driven people. Can you imagine just how much positive spin can be put on Scully committing this friday, a few weeks before the season proper. Almost looks like a set up! It's a marketer's dream for a club like ours.

I sure hope you are right Roost....If Scully has already committed to the MFC it will be the biggest story this club has been involved in since 1965.

jesus let's not get carried away

roost I love your optimism but 'marketer's dream?' this thing has been an ugly mess and when he signs the only emotion i have will be sheer relief, then it's time to start worrying about the rest of them

I cannot fathom why he would agree to anything with us or anyone else now, as opposed to the end of season.

as his manager will have made clear to him, whether he wants to stay with us or not it is almost certainly going to be more lucrative to do it later, because it is likely all players will be getting more, and his specific value will probably skyrocket even more with a good year. Any club in the comp could offer him more at seasons end than what the MFC are offering now, whats the harm in waiting and seeing? Plus he will have more influential information, such as how the team is going, how he is getting on with his teammateds and coach, and personal spects of his life like girlfirend, investments, family etc

why the hell would he sign now when he doesnt have to?

As stated before I agree, why would you put Scully in front of the wolves leading into his first pre-season match. The media is only interested in one thing from Scully and they will keep asking the same question just changing the words slightly to try and catch him out.

And what does Melbourne have to gain, a little extra coverage in a nothing week, do we look like pin heads and stipulate to the media "Tom is here to talk about tomorrows game and not his contract if you keep asking him the interview is over"

No party has anything to gain from this media conference unless there is something to announce.

If this press conference does eventuate I want to hear Tom say that he is committed with us for 2012 and beyond or his resignation speech. I will not be satisfied anything else.

I couldn't agree more !!!

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w
