WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - BILLY STRETCH

Featured Replies

He looks a bit bigger than when I last saw a photo of him.

I'd say he'd still be a good 16kg heavier than Cale Morton in that one.

When you are down and almost out on the canvas, all you can see are stars. SS was a good b++ player who played some really good games. But wake up everybody we are losing perspective.

Is it true that Grinter has a son coming through the ranks also who's looking the goods?

Billy was named in the 40 man squad for SA's u18, good effort. He's listed as being 180cm & 67kg

Coming along nicely

Had a chance to hear from Steve yesterday & he and the coaches are absolutely wrapped with Billy's development especially the last year he's really come on a lot and more importantly is loving his footy. The fact that he's made the team as an underage player could move him up the pecking order a bit.

If he's the one I'm thinking about he's about 23 years old.

"The 16 year old made his debut for the Glenelg reserves"

And people gave us heat for playing Viney in the VFL last year when he was 18 and ready for it, whilst in the SANFL 16 year olds play reserves! Good stuff.

Looks like a solid game from young Billy.

Looks like a solid game from young Billy.

And he's getting used to 50 point thrashing as well! :P

But seriously, it's a big credit to him to be playing U18s a year early and from the sound of things he's grown a bit too. I really hope he works out as a FS pick. It would suck if someone underbid us and he had to play somewhere else.

An amazing game.. He kicked 2 goals for the Red Team and was in the best for the Blue... Sounds like a few Melbourne players!!!

Switched at half time? It happens in our practice games.

27 possessions and looked lively from a report i had today from a resident ais-afl watcher.

they said he's got a real 'bounce' to his football.

will wear #11, and as stated in previous pages he's now listed as 180cm and 67kg - he's also the youngest member of the sa squad by a good couple of months.

sign Billy up NOW

lol

Does anyone remember when we did that with Jack Viney and they seething masses cheered until we were nearly forced to use Pick 3 to get him at which point the seething masses said it was stupid to telegraph our desire for him by signing him up at 16?

sign him to a deal that finishes on draft day but includes his nomination for father son without any commitment from us.

Next step rig the press commentary around him when he's 18 his value drops. A jack darling like tent issue on a school camp could work!

Get him a couple of rounds below his worth. Win win

From what I've been told he'd be a likely second or third round pick this year.

It'll be interesting to see whether his value rises in 2014 - if he continues to improve he may end up being like Viney and worth a first round pick. Still can't believe we landed Jack with #26. Bargain!

Late call up to play for SA in the U18's champs this weekend. Good signs as a skinny underage kid!

If we are seriously looking at him, I hope we are giving him some specific training/coaching for this/next season. Also, I'd love for us to get him on the 'permission to train' list for preseason. He may not do the whole pre-season with us, but it would be a pretty awesome experience for the young kid to get him out here for 2-3 weeks to do some fitness work and skills work with the squad, to give him a taste of where he needs to get to. It may give him that motivation to push himself a little harder next year.

We've had a fair bit to do with him the last few years. He did his work experience with the club, I think in the physio department. I'm pretty sure we'll put our hand up for him when he's eligible.

Could someone please remind us at what stage Jack Viney made his commitment to us?

I stand corrected but I thought it was at least at this time of his second last season in under age ranks i.e at around the stage where Stretch is now.

Wasn't he sixteen when he signed that contract with us?

as per 3 times already, we need kids that want to play for us. He has talent, the desire and is father son eligible.

Sign him up.

Good sign that he has made SA under 18s a year ahead of schedule.

As per your request....

MELBOURNE has signed the 16-year-old son of club champion Todd Viney

to keep him out of the clutches of Greater Western Sydney.

Jack Viney, 16, has committed to the Demons under the father-son rule even though he can't play for the club for another three years.

Viney captained SA to its first national under-16 title this year and was named the state's most valuable player.

A midfielder like his father, Viney doesn't become available for selection until the 2012 draft, but Melbourne is getting in early because he could be nominated next year by GWS.

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?
