Ok, I'll take a look at your side.

Surjan gets the job done, I prefer him that a young player with potential isolated in a back pocked. Hurn I think would get more press in a good Victorian side. His crazy long kicking is a bonus and his size allows him to play 3rd tall. Adcock actually played 20+ games I think in 2009. He's had a couple of injury hit years but made it out there in between that. He's Grimes like at his best and that's what I want from him. He'll do a job on any mid sized half forward flanker and can use the ball. I'm probably missing a star in the back half, but I think as a unit I'm actually stronger than some of the other sides.

My midfield is my strength especially if you rate Kennedy (who has to stay in the midfield), or rate what he brings compared to the players around him. Hill I jumped at early for pure excitement and Griffen, Thompson and Thomas are all in that very close to elite level. I thought Thompson in particular was a steal. Importantly they win the ball, use the ball and tackle. Half forward line is weak but I think Henderson will improve next year and does a job. I think when Swallow gets going next year he'll look good on a HFF. He's a good size, strong and loves a goal, half forward is perfect for him even though he'll play in the middle from round 1 at GC. I would have preferred just 1 of Monfries or Morton and instead taken a Banfield/Garlett type. But instead of crumbing I've got more power on the lead. Schneider is top class and Buddy is Buddy. I agree going early on the rucks was a tactical error, but I'm more than happy with Jamar. I think along with Sandilands and Jolly he is one of 3 who can actually get right on top of an opposition ruckman of the class we all have.

Further to that I'd include Cox in that group of rucks. Although, Sandilands does stand out at his best.

In all honesty Swallow (D) is a good pick up. He's a plug'n play. If anyone is talking him down they are a tad jealous.

Surjan solid but unspectacular. In the mould of Junior.

Hurn will be better in 2011.

Was exposed for pace and agility in 2010, but the sub rule will bring him back into it.

Tree trunks for legs & a kick to match.

Both of Monfries and Morton are unacceptable IMO!

Schneider overrated.

The Roger Mellie Spin

Champion Team:

Defence - solid and unspectacular. I like both Fisher and Chaplin as the keys.

Was aiming for Garland as the 3rd tall depending on the opposition. I had to settle for Rivers

with some reluctance. I though his first half of 2010 was horrendous but improved out of site in the second half.

Also aimed for Pears earlier but was pipped by about 2 picks.

Always happy with his spoiling efforts and fearless, last lines of defence marking.

Rich will bounce back from the second year blues and unleash some lethal kicking.

Krakoeur missed a bit of 2010 but happy enough with his dash out of defence.

Fisher can go forward at a pinch and Murphy can switch to defence as needed

Mids - J Selwood, Mundy, Jack - cant argue with that. Jack capable of tagging as needed

Can rotate through the midfield Le Cras, Douglas and increasingly Melksham.

Essendon are awful - so I took Melksham, who I rate (inside and outside)and could not exclude from a GF side just because its his second year.

Douglas - B & F winner at Adelaide - there as a mid/forward and noted for his defensive pressure up forward (a tackling machine)

Very happy with the forwards and I hope Roughead will tear it up out of Buddy's shadow.

As far as positions go - they are roughly in place but I would never expect a side to play in the positions named - particularly these days

At the very least Didak, Douglas and Le Cras would all swap with each other.

Murphy would play tall or small, forward and back.

Misses: Pav, Garland, Pears, using pick 3 on Selwood

Hits: 2011 Premiership Cup :)

In the coming season, I thought we could apply dreamteam or supercoach points to our teams each week.

As we all seemed to have picked proper teams, by that I mean players in correct positions, not just possession accumulators, it'll give us some sort of fair, outside assessment for next year, and a bit of fun.

The beauty is, no one has to do anything. No maintenance, it's a marathon with the team you have selected. Injuries, suspensions, byes, poor form... bad luck! You get the total of the players that played that week.

Someone will need to add up the team totals and draw up the ladder, I'm happy to do that.

I was thinking we could play each other twice. That's the first 18 rounds.

Our finals start in round 19. Instead of a top 8 we have a top 6, the bottom 4 are out and laughed at.

-Top 2 teams skip elimination finals and go straight through to the semi's.

-(rnd 19) 3rd plays 5th, 4th plays 6th, winners advance. Losers are out.

-(rnd20) In the semi's 2nd plays the highest ranked winner, 1st plays the lowest ranked winner.

-(rnd21) Grand final.

-Bragging rights.

The league shall be called WNC (When Nerds Collide).

If this idea gets the nod, we'll work out who'll draw up the fixture.

Seems one way to settle it DA. Good suggestion.

It will be interesting to see what old55's judges have in store too.

No.175 - Garrick Ibbotson (Fremantle)

Coach's Summary

The forward line looks very potent with mercurial Gold Coast recruit Jared Brennan playing foil to champion spearhead Brendan Fevola, who is primed for a big year in front of goal without having to worry about the cumbersome Brown blocking his space. With his first injury-free and highly promising season under his belt, young Scott Gumbleton is now going to show the footy world just why he was selected at No.2 in the 2006 draft by commanding the air space around centre half forward. He'll be complimented on the flanks by Adelaide young gun Chris Knights and Melbourne's inspirational club champion Brad Green. North Melbourne live-wire Lindsay Thomas will work at the feet of Fev and co, crumbing goals while providing constant forward line pressure.

As we all know the game is won and lost in the middle of the ground and my midfield group is dripping with top shelf quality and finals proven hardness. Brownlow medal winning ball magnet Jimmy Bartel is still at the peak of his powers and is joined in the centre by Hawthorn's tough and uncompromising Jordan Lewis and Carlton's silky-smooth-moving No.1 draft pick, Marc Murphy. All three players are also capable goal kickers and can perform any number of roles for the team. On the wings you've got the blinding pace and indigenous magic of Aaron Davey and Sydney's brilliant young 2010 Rising Star winner Daniel Hannebery. Giving us first use at the stoppages we have dual premiership ruckman and proven big game performer, Collingwood's Darren Jolly.

Our defence is built around the twin rocks of the best fullback in the AFL in Brian Lake and probably the best footballer in Australia in Brendan Goddard, both of whom will repel attack after opposition attack and deliver the ball with surgical precision to our A-grade midfield group. Lake is ably supported by the hard-nosed West Coast premiership back pocket Beau Waters and the young, long-kicking Fremantle speedster Garrick Ibbotson. Supporting Goddard on the half back line you've got classy Port Adelaide runner Steven Salopek and Richmond's ultra-competitive Daniel Jackson, who has proven himself to be one of the competition's premier taggers.

So there you have it. The Royals have got class, quality and line-breaking speed all over the park, plenty of avenues to goal and a rock solid defensive unit. The jewel in our star-studded crown - Brendan Goddard - has been appointed Captain for the 2011 season and looks forward to holding the premiership cup aloft on the last Saturday in September.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
