Lucas Cook

Age: 18

Position: Tall Forward

History: Lucas Cook is a 194cm and 82kg AFL- AIS Graduate, who is an extremely agile key forward prospect with a strong lead and the ability to take contested pack marks. He additionally is a good reader of the ball when it is in the air, has a strong overhead mark and is also very good when the ball on the ground.

In Vic Countrys first game in the Under 18 Championships Cook kicked 5 goals (including 3 in three minutes) and also took 5 contested marks and collected 20 disposals. In early July, Cook was a part of Vic Countrys first national Under 18 championship win in seven years and impressed AFL recruiters so much he was named in the Under 18 All-Australian Team.

In 2008 and 2009 Cook played for the North Ballarat Rebels in the TAC Cup and played in 20 matches and kicked a total of 19 goals.

Cook is currently into his third season with North Ballarat and after 7 matches has scored 18.5 (an average of 3 goals per game) from 29 marks.

Just like to say welcome to the best club in the world  to all our new players. I hope you enjoy your time at the club. ;)

Wow! Not sure how tough the opposition is, but that Howe kid has talent!!

MFCSS. Seek help immediately.

Welcome to the club boys, hope you have a blast.

Claiming Troy Davis as my boy alongside my last boy Rohan Bail.

NB: There is nothing gay about that not that there's anything wrong with that.

From our friends at Inside Football:

TROY DAVIS - Geelong Falcons, Vic

Born: 10/6/92 Ht: 193cm Wt: 90kg

"Troy is a Geelong Grammar boy who is a centre half back and I'd rate him a chance. He's a big bodied kid who moves well and he might be helped by the fact there's not a lot of key defenders around. Has really improved his speed and mobility this year." - Geelong Falcons region manager Michael Turner

JEREMY HOWE-Tasmania

Born:20yo Ht: 191 cm Wt: 83 kg

"Jeremy's an interesting story and he's the chance to emulate jeromey Webberley (drafted by Richmond in 2009) and get picked up out of the state league. He's an absolute jack-in-the-box who takes screamers but he's had an inconsist¬ent journey through the talent pathway. He's coming from a country league club last year to play in the state league this year. Plays at full for¬ward and had some terrific games where he was able to catch it and kick goals." - AFL Tasmania high performance manager Nick Probert

hahah i'm going to start keeping a list and award the most rubbish post of the year at the conclusion of next season

I can't lose - I hope I make it! ;)

I'm trying to place these kids (based on not having seen them except for highlights packages).

Taylor seems like a Warnock type defender. Speed, power, agility and looks to be able to run with the footy. Players like that need pace, but usually need time to develop.

McDonald reads to me like Leigh Brown. Strong, hard working, lion hearted tall utility. Wouldn't surprise me if he's being looked at as a mobile second ruckman who can do a job for you anywhere.

Howe is a medium/tall forward, but I guess it's his running ability and class that has got him drafted as much as his obvious high marking. It's hard to find what he has.

Cook looks to be that tall forward who can compete for the ball when it slows down. Good endurance, good mark but also able to take full advantage of his good work through kicking.

Bear in mind that this is based on no information so I'm just theorising, more than anything else. Very interesting draft.

I agree on McDonald being a Leigh Brown type. Looks to be a player who's place in the team and the modern game will add to his value. As an individual nothing flashy, but as part of a team an asset. Who knows I could be massively under selling him as there isn't hype around him. He could be the next Jarrod Roughead for all I know.

Davis I think we've drafted here on attributes more than any particular talent (again I know nothing just a gut feel). I think what we've gone for is a competitor with that speed you need to play full back. With a strong body and a good tough country mindset. Would be hard for him to be as good but I think we've looked at the basic ingredients of Frawley and thought we can mold something out of this kid. You can't teach speed in solidly built defenders though so I'm pretty happy with this selection.

With Howe I worry our recruiters fell in love with a highlights package. But there seems to be good endurance, sound skills and all round ability. I think for a 20 year old playing state league to go at pick 33 he's obviously interviewed well. I'd like to find out why he bummed around in Dodges ferry and didn't aim even higher than TSL. Russel Robertson, Jack Riewoldt, a white Liam Jurrah - I'd settle for him bringing any of that to the table. I'm excited to see if he can produce at VFL (or AFL) level early next season.

Cook I like. Should be physically capable in a few years time and he fits our game plan with suitable skills. Looks a cut above the Brad Miller mark and have no idea what to do with it and ruin an attack. Can play CHF with his endurance or closer to goal as he grows and has CHB potential as well. Not sure who he resembles. I'd be happy to throw him a few cheap NAB cup games, see what tricks he's got. After that I'm expecting a quiet year.

Maybe its overkill and poor drafting. But I'm really excited about getting 4 tall country boys (not sure about Howe but it's Tassie) into the team. If Howe has the typical big personality that comes with high flyers he should spice things up. Cook appears a diligent young man from afar. McDonald typical no frills worker, and Davis I hope he's brought the same attitude as well as hair style from Kerang as Jordie McKenzie.

Good post.

Re Howe, I think the clue here is in BP's line that he's really come on in the last 6 weeks. Ready to make the next step? We're about to find out!

That Howe kids highlight reel is fun to watch. Great contested marking ability, what a leap.

Would it be wrong to call him the 2 Headed Wizard?

Like the way he wheels around on to the right and kicks through it too.

I'll take a stab and say he has zero defensive side to his game ?

One writeup I read (can't remember where now) claimed he had good defensive skills

So maybe he is a Robbo who keeps his feet and can chase??

Edited by daisycutter

Howe reminds me of Danny Hughes and I rated Hughes just couldn't get his body right. Is Jack Watts the next Garry Lyon he may be the next step ladder for many marks of the year.

daisycutter: think you may have it there! Howe looks exciting but without Robbo's blemishes. Didn't see him injured after any of those marks.

Is this the most exciting big man draft for us since the really exciting and high potential (Bates,Dunn,Newton) draft?

...

Mate, Jordie McKenzie is from Terang.

I agree on McDonald, coming across like a Leigh Brown-type utility.

Has a basketball background too.

All 4 blokes run a 14+ beep test fwiw.

For those "normal" people that don't use twitter, I enjoyed what camschwab had to say about the draftees:

Just rang each of the lads we've drafted.

Now that's a good phone call to make.

Some very excited young men and families.

From the first phone call, we ask the players to embrace the heritage of the club.

They are now part of it.

Very proud young men.

Wow this young Cook fella looks incredibly agile for a tall CHF!

Strong work ethic is evident! :)

For those old enough dare I make a prediction from left field. The new Robert Walls.

To find ourselves landing the All Australian CHF. How good can it get

His second efforts are really, really good. He's definitely no big, lumbering forward.

I like our picks. With Gysberts playing minimal football, Strauss, Blease, Tapscott as well as Viney in the future the club can't have gone in any other direction.

On potential it is a really good mix, even accounting for the current stocks. Cook being named as AA CHF in front of other players rated higher, may just be a great decision.

Obviously some time will tell. A couple I hope to see quite early on and if the potential is realised we will be much the better.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Gold Coast

On Friday, the Demons return to our Casey Fields fortress where they have a 77% win rate. The scent of September is in the air and the struggling Suns are on the horizon. The Cranbourne weather forecast? Ominous, like the match itself: a strong chance of carnage. Let’s be honest, last week’s first half against the West Coast was a training drill but we dropped our guard in the final quarter. While this match is a mismatch on paper — second versus seventeenth — football is won in the wind, the contests, and the moments.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #32 Tom Sparrow

The rugged Sparrow’s career appears to have plateaued in recent years. He makes the side on a week to week basis but he is unable to establish a foothold in the team’s midfield and arguably performs best outside of the contest in a forward position without being a goal kicker. He remains a good honest foot soldier but is not a star.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #33 Tom Fullarton

Fullarton managed a couple of games in the first half of the season but soon found himself back in the VFL. There, he found a niche at centre half back but it was not enough to retain a place on the list at season’s end.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #35 Harrison Petty

Entering 2025, it looked as if Petty would be secured in a defensive position, but plans shifted and he spent more time forward, averaging just over a goal per game throughout the season. It remains uncertain which area of the ground he will be expected to cover under the new coaching regime.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #36 Kysaiah Pickett

The dynamic small forward, possessing an innate ability to generate excitement with his explosive play around the goals, successfully transitioned into a role that afforded him more time in the midfield. The club also negotiated a long-term deal with Pickett, thereby eliminating any prospect of a move west by their star young player.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #37 Kade Chandler

For a few years now, he has been a reliable, hard working pressure forward, but in 2025, Chandler elevated his performance, becoming an integral component of the team with enough versatility to play effectively on a wing from time to time.
