I've noticed with all the signings that there's been no news about Cameron Bruce and I'm wondering whats happening with him?

Still overseas on holidays?

Suspect the club is waiting on him to return and advise of his intentions before issuing the final delistings.

I did find it odd that he didn't go on the China trip.

I've got a feeling another team has been in his ear, trying to get him go in the PSD.

Either essendon or carlton, I'd reckon.

All baseless speculation at this stage.

I hope he turns his nose up at one year and leaves.

So does everyone else who has no idea of Cam's importance to the side...

I reckon asking for 2 years is ok. But he's 30. If it was good enough for Shane Crawford, it's good enough for Bruce. 30 year olds the league over accept 1 year contract. What makes him think he's deserving of special treatment?

That and the fact I don't think the Suns have the ability to sign uncontracted players anymore...

The deadline for that was during trade week.

Yes, but they can still go through the PSD like any other club, can they not? I assume they would also have pick 1 in the PSD.

Does the club have a set policy for players over 30 of one year contracts?

If so, Cam knows the rules and he knows he's meant to be a club leader.

I suppose he's entitled to look after himself and can take his time making what is no doubt an important decision. Does he remain a one club man for the length of his career or does he opt for a contract elsewhere that might give him more time and more cash.

It could be a tough decision for Cam but it's also equally tough for the club which has a line and it's own policies to uphold.

That's football. That's business.

If that were to happen, surely we'd be eligible for a compensation pick.

The whole system was organized so that GC17 wouldn't be enticing players to enter the PSD so that the club losing a player doesn't get any compensation.

We'd have serious claims for grievance if that were to happen.

This is becoming more of a mystery than Allen Jakovich's whereabouts. If he's not 100% committed for playing with us even for one more season then I don't have have a problem if he goes. I'd have a problem if he stuck around and wasn't on board a full 100%. Not good having a sooking veteran sucking up the energy of the positive momentum that is building at the club. I hope there are sincere non club related issues for his continued absence and silence.

Whatever the case, it's very clear that the compensation is inadequate and I would expect the 16 exisitng clubs to put up a case to the AFL for increased compensation in the future.

I don't believe Geelong got anywhwere near enough for Gary Ablett and if ever there was proof in the eating of the pudding it had to be the fact that Hawthorn used its Campbell Brown compensation pick to get ... David Hale!!! Brown was a premiership player, All Australian (?) and a regular top five team player and Hale spent half of the last two seasons in the VFL. I hope Cam Schwab reads this and takes this up with the powers that be at the AFL because if those [snip]s from GWS take one of our players next year I would want quid pro quo by way of replacement.

Not at all.

The Ablett compo was fair imo, especially considering they originally got him father-son.

And what the hawks did with their compensation is irrelevant.

They may have overpaid for Hale, but that doesn't reduce the worth of the pick.

(some may say the compensation was too much for Brown - the key isn't what they have already achieved, but rather what they are expected to achieve in the future at their new club).

I would rather have Hale than Brown.

I would rather have big weeping sores all over my body than Brown, so what's your point?

Use your brain and read the post I was replying to. Hale is more than fair compensation for Brown.

He also knows the clubs recent attitude to aging players, MCDonald, Robertson, Wheatley, Whelan, Yze (all his contemporaries and no doubt friends). There is no loyalty from the club for those at this end of the gravy train. One year deals at Melbourne are precisely that. Compare the Bombers and Mr Gadget, Hawks and that's what I'm talking about. If he can get two years somewhere else with the possibility of an extra third given form from another top club, why wouldn't you take it.

Was the Mcdonald decision too hasty or was his destiny inconsiquential to Bruce's? Would the FD have acted differently given the benefit of hindsight?

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
