I reckon Scully's year is slightly underrated. He'd be my top pick.

He pips Hannebery in every 'average' category for a midfielder. More disposals, tackles, clearances, contested possessions, uncontested possessions, 1%'s, inside 50's, rebound from 50's - everything. And it's his first year in the AFL system. His engine is already elite, which is extraordinary, and he has explosive pace that Hannebery and most lack.

His best game is the equal of Hannebery's best game, but his next best probably trails Hannebery's next couple of best.

Hannebery will win it and is certainly deserving, but Scully has legitimate claims.

A number of stars haven't won the Rising Star award and still have impressive CV's. I think Scull and JT would prefer to see a few premierships next to their name.

Did anyone else listen to the coverage on SEN? They had a snippet of JT's introduction to life as an AFL footballer with footage (that obviously we couldn't see on the radio). They must have shown parts of the boxing camp the boys participated in with Beamer and Chunk. By the sounds of it, JT and Watts had a bit of a bout, and from what I could visualise, JT must have landed a ripper on him! They are replaying the Rising Star after the footy this Saturday night - will be watching with interest - could be a pi$$er if that's true. also mentioned he and watts are very competitive.

Will they win enough games? Not sure if that maters - maybe someone who has more time on their hands can report on the previous winners and where their team finished/how many wins they had in that year. I'm not expecting GC17 to have a cracker year first up, and I think with a good preseason in the gym for the Gys, it might bring him back with great hunger, and hopefully a team that improves again at the same time.

I think people that want to term this a 'media' award and bring it down in any fashion are just a long way off the mark.

Supporters should have every right to feel proud about one of 'their own' being awarded individual awards, many of these awards are presented to the individual but the entire side & football club gets recognition and should rightly feel as if they have contributed in some way.

I enjoy this award and that the AFL get the parents involved, especially the mothers as it is almost a final handing over of 'their boy' into the care of said AFL club. The previous 16,17,18 years it is the parents sacrificing so much.

Congratulations to Dan Hannebery. A deserving winner of this years award. This time a couple of years ago he was busy stocking up on eggs!

Great debut years by Skull & JT. A couple of good posts above really highlight how good these two were, especially Scully's year. The fact that they are a year behind 1st & 3rd highlights exactly how good these two will be.
