Current Rule

In 2007 the AFL made an important amendment for the father-son rule, establishing a bidding system to determine which draft pick a club must give up to secure the potential recruit. The current system works as follows:[1] [2]

* 1. Individual clubs are free to nominate potential father-son recruits within the above eligibility guidelines.

* 2. A meeting is held on the Monday before the start of trade week where clubs can bid for the nominated players. Each club has the option to bid, in reverse ladder order, for the nominated players.

* 3. If a bid is made, the club that nominated the father-son player must use its next available selection if it wishes to retain its hold on that player. If a club nominating the father-son player declines to match the selection nominated, the club with the successful bid must use that selection at the Draft to select the player.

* 4. Any club that makes a successful bid on a father-son selection must to the pick the player they nominate.

* 5. If no bid is made by another club, the club that nominated the father-son eligible player will forfeit its last selection in the draft to select the player.

For example in 2008 the Western Bulldogs had to use their 1st round selection, #14, to secure Ayce Cordy after St Kilda bid their 1st round selection for him. Ayce's father, Brian, played 124 games for the Bulldogs in the 1980s.

no- tommorrow he plays against WA for the under 16 championship.Just hope he grows some- 175 - is a little small.

Rhino, my source is Chris Connelly! Chris said that they have been talking with Todd about Jack playing for the club.

If you bump into Chris ask him, he will confirm this to be true. I do not have a media link as this is something Chris has said during a conversation in May.

You are definately correct- that is Jack- No1. Watch TAC show Sunday- they will be highlighting him as a future champion.

This isn't meant to be a negative post but what is really separating us from the better teams is they drool over what they have and we drool over what we might have. We've been doing it for a couple of years. First we wet ourselves over Jack Watts and then we went into hysteria over getting the one and two draft picks and now it is Viney. I'm not knocking the enthusiasm but we really need to worry about the here and now and let the wiser heads of the club plan for the future because pinning our hopes on babies that may or may not become good players is only adding to the brain damage we are getting as we bang our heads on the keyboard waiting for the MFC to produce another star.

Don't get me wrong: passion is good but the level of desperation is quite scary sometimes. Some will make it, some won't and others will surprise us, but to expect that we will somehow be a power because we got some certain kid just lets up for a bad fall when the law of averages rears it's ugly head.

I think we're al jumping the gun a bit here. Am sure the club is keeping in good with the Viney clan and when its appropriate things will happen. Pretty sure he'll listen to his old man too. Just depends on what that will be lol.

we have a good list, we will be a lot better in 2 years time, he'll have played some senior footy no doubt with the Roosters and all things being equal will probably slot right in just as Trengove has.

Very interesting indeed and thanks for pointing this out.So ,if as I am told Jack Viney may come over a year earlier for schooiling and possibly some pre training- whom would sign for him -a manager?.I hear Todd is acting on his behalf. If indeed the above did take place and Jack at the last minute says stick it- what grounds would we have then?

An employment contract is ok, as long as it's for the benefit of the minor.

I don't think we've got much of a case if Jack decided to nominate for the draft outside the father-son rules. The contract for his employment once drafted by the club would be binding, although the contract (if it met the requirements for contract formation), may not.

The other issue, is that the Dees, if they wanted to hold Jack to his word, would probably struggle to prove that there was an intention to enter legal relations anyway.

Thought I'd raise an interesting point, in that Jack played a fair bit of school footy last year at PAC in a midfield that included both Jack Trengove and Luke Tapscott. If (and more likely when) Jack joins the MFC via the F/S in 2012 draft, he'll have no shortage of help fitting into the MFC environment.
