Martin Flanagan at his very best ......... and he has penned some beauties about our great Club and great people over the last couple of years. This one provided some new insights for me about the Stynes / McLardy relationship. Our Club is in great hands.

I concur

A superb article that even brought a tear to my eye. Just shows how lucky we are with the new board we have, along with Schwabby and C.C.

That is a great article, yes.

I just truly hope this board of People can eradicate from this club the type of performance we had last week & against West Coast.

I say it because successive groups of people have tried over the years without succeeding.

Posters on here can give many reasons in defence of our team, but i don't buy it.

Where is the commitment to the cause & Jumper that existed on QB?? I don't give a stuff where the game is played, the Contest at the ball should not change.

Performances like last week are not good through our sponsors eyes, even with the Big Jimma in charge.

But Yes Thankyou Martin for another great piece of writing-Maybe Martin Flanagan knows the reason why melbourne lose when expected to win????

Gee you did a great job of finding a negative out of a very big positive article.

Flanagan is a journalistic genius, every single article of his is so well written and written with passion. Makes the lesser journalists look like the D graders that they are. And once again he has put together a beauty.

The Article was extremely positive and beautifully crafted as are all of Martins contributions, But with on field performances like last saturday the press are not going to continue to Print Positive stories forever.

We as a club have been very lucky over the last 3 years with press reporting, but the Club needs better on field commitment otherwise that Press will turn nasty very quickly,

No, you are just not ready to face up to a reality yet. But everybody will get there i know.

Love your passion.

Disagree entirely and think your points are off topic of the intention of the thread / article.

Fair enough, but what are the exact intentions of the thread?

I love what Jimmy and the Board have achieved so far, but i still worry that a very old problem at the MFC exists, & all i said was i hope Jimmy, Don and all the Board can fix it.

Interesting for you to make such a narrow-minded comment in regard to this article.

Name one single club that has not been on the wrong side of a thrashing the likes of which we are talking about.

Name one single young developing team that has not had erratic form and been soundly beaten from time to time.

Even Geelong in 2007 were obliterated by Collingwood.

It happens, accept it, move on. The problem will be if the kids don't learn from these beatings.

There will be many more.

They will never cease completely.

I understand the very old problem that you talk of but that is what Jimmy HAS been changing. And with every day he fights and survives, the players learn a little more.

What Jimmy and his board have done in the last couple of years puts to shame several administrations before them and the lack of WORK they actually did to rebuilding and improving this once great club.

First - the point of the thread is to point out what a great article was written. It is to clearly point out the beginning of the Stynes/McClardy relationship, how it has built over the years, their mutual respect for each other, and to show the Melbourne faithful that we are in very good hands.

Second - since when is it the role of a board of directors to eradicate the type of performance we had last week and against West Coast? Sure, they appoint the coaching staff etc, but that is nowhere near their role, and it shouldn't be. I would much prefer my board, who as members we elect, to be putting their efforts into making our club equal to or exceed the financial powerhouses of the competition, making us a viable going concern, providing us with the MONEY and RESOURCES to build a football team which has everything at their disposal that they can realistically need and want. With these resources, the football department can then work to weed out mediocre performance. But then again, who would have thought a young team would be inconsistent?

Third - Since when have we ever been in a position where we are expected to win? We do not have that luxury, and never should. Once that attitude comes in, from supporters, and from players, we are going to struggle. You do not go to any game of football expecting to win. Hey, maybe your expectation has led to those type of performances you mention above. No team should ever expect to win, and neither should its supporters. It only leads to complacency. We cannot and never have been afforded that luxury.

Dont agree with your Interpretation of this article, however I understand where you are coming from

But I believe you should have started your own thread to discuss this problem rather than take away from this post

So Ill start it for you and I look forward to discussing it there with you

I think you are the narrow minded one. You have obviously accepted these soft beatings for many years.

Yes all clubs have had these kind of beatings.

BUT WE HAVE THEM REGULARLY for decades now, So NO the CLIB DOES NOT LEARN FROM THEM...as yet

I HOPE THIS Board can address this problem....

and please so not use the Geelong 2007 Loss to collingwood as an example of similarity to us. We have many stairs to climb before we can claim Geelongs position.

After losing the 2000 GF we couldn't even make the finals, let alone go one better.

So once again i hope Jimmy & His Board are the ones to finally "exorcise" the '65 Curse.

First-I have read the article twice and i like it, & thank the stars above that Jim Stynes is our president, because without him the Media would have hung this club out to dry. Over the last 3 years we have had the Best Honeymoon of any "Rebuilding" club.

So we are plain lucky-But without on field commitment to the jumper from the players each week that Media Tip Toeing around the MFC will not last

Second-Why do you wish to separate the Board from the players? We are all in this together. If the players do not perform to their best, we shall never be a financial powerhouse as you wish.

I think that is one of jimmy's great strengths, that he is uniting the whole club as one-This club has been fractured since 1965. But without success on the field, even the greatest boards will not be able to perform miracles.

If you want MONEY and RESOURCES to be ongoing at the MFC, we have to be performing at a very high rate every week, and if we do get Thumped-TO BOUNCE BACK HARD the next week. From winning one gets good fixtures TV Prime Time. Top Sponsorship exposure, stadium revenue etc etc.

The Board and players should be reasnoably close in so much as they know they are all working for the one Place & cause.

Third-Why should we never expect to win?? Between 1954-64 You Bet this club expected to win. Between 1971-91 Hawthorn ALWAYS expected to win, and they were pretty good at it.

I wish the Jimmy Stynes Led Demons to create that same dynasty. If that is not your wish ox_5 i sympathize for you. But to be the Best you gotta be tough & ruthless.

At present you accept mediocrity mate-LIFT!

I agree completely & yes i know it is a long Job-But Last week when Jack Trengove was out there trying to fire up our senior players-That to me is a very deep Seated Problem.

Maybe what i need to say in this thread is that i don't think enough of our players are giving Jim Stynes the Respect & Commitment he deserves. Not just at the MCG, But every week.

It's not good enough, considering what the Great man going through is Doing for this great club.

Imitation is one of the highest forms of respect, so thanks for that.

Have you realised nobody has agreed with you about anything you have said? You dont seem to very well understand the workings of the inner sanctum of a football club.

This all stemmed with you being annoyed at last weeks performance. Now you are saying that if you get thumped, that you need to bounce back. We havnt played the game this afternoon yet, so maybe wait til then before you hit the roof. Our team has shown that they can do this. I present to you the evidence of Round 2 pies match after the Round 1 thumping. I present to you the evidence of the Bulldogs game after the Kangas game. I present to you the Port game after the West Coast game. We didnt win them all, but we sure as hell BOUNCED BACK HARD as you like to put it.

Of course the Board and the football are one of the same. But it is very clear that it is not their role. A board, of any business, appoint a board to complete the tasks they want completed. Chris Connolly, Dean Bailey etc have been appointed to do this.

And nah, I don't want a dynasty. Why would I? Are you really that thick that that is what you gathered from my post?

You need to lift, and support this side through thick and thin, and have a little bit of patience. Cultures are not changed overnight.

I have been Following the Demons for 40 years so do not question my loyalty.

If you think the performances against adelaide and West Coast are acceptable-Fine, But i do not. And for that matter i do not mind if everyone on here disagrees with my sentiments (which have always ben very pro Jimmy)

But i will never accept soft performances against a very ordinary performing Aselaide & West Coast.-Both of them are shite this year.

Your Comment on dynasties-a little difficult to work out which side of the fence you sit on. You have had a bet each way!!

BTW if we had Beaten North Adelaide and Wet Coke we wouldn't have needed to bounce back-we would have just won-cool that's the object. We were Beaten in all of those 3 games bfore the Games started.

We Beat Port by one point. Remember....

Bleat bleat noise noise cliche cliche. Go enjoy your holiday

Happy with todays effort were you??? Sorry for speaking my mind-I am sure nobody inside the club is worried that i speak openly, with always the best intentions.

My wish is for this club to be a Power again over a long period of time, & not a mere Doorstop like Fitzroy ended up.

Sounds like we have a few lawyers presenting their defence of an under performing club. It appears to me most people accept that Jimmy & co are heading in the right direction. I only hope we can see another Grand Old flag in the not too distant future. Keep up the fight Jim and nice article in the Age.

The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
