Garry Lyon has made numerous comments on radio and tv about Jacks performances this year and what he needs to do to improve. Comments that i found to be very insightful and constructive, from a person that definitely knows his stuff.

On Footy Classified on Monday night, Garry's fellow commentators asked him whether he had passed on these comments to Jack personally, to which he has said no.

I want to know why former great forwards of our club like Garry, Neita and The Ox aren't down at the club coaching Jack on how to play as a key forward.

With all due respect to Josh Mahoney, I don't think he has the runs on the board (95 Career Matches, 87 Career Goals)

to teach Jack the art of playing CHF or FF.

I believe we need to invest greater resources into developing Jack Watts in order for him to reach his potential as he is in my opinion our greatest asset on our list.

We need a former great key forward as our forward coach or even as just as a specialist coach for Jack (and Liam), whether it be from our club or another, to teach Jack how to play as a key forward.

This is a great question, I for one would like to know why some of our past great forwards aren't involved in teaching Jack.

Being a great forward is not a pre-requisite for being a good coach, nor does being a great forward automatically make you a great coach.

Basically, you've got no idea whether or not Josh Mahoney is a better coach than Ox or Garry. In fact, I'd hazard a guess that he probably is a much better coach than either of those two, given that he's a coach and they aren't. Josh was one of the first blokes Dean head-hunted when he took the job. I have a very hard time swallowing this forumulated opinion that he can't coach.

Probably because they have not been asked and the club has coaches for that stuff. seriously!

I think there are legitimate grounds for the question ( op ) Our forward line, it's structure ( if any ) and certainly it's potency IS our Achilles .Seaoned observers are questioning our approach and it warrants attention, answers and action. Remember it's not just what you have but how you use it. We need todo better and if it's down to Mahoney then he needs to produce something more

Good Call, although i suspect he is pretty happy with his roll in the media as money would not be huge and his probably enjoying his time away from a footy club. However i agree with the topic (i am not saying that Josh is no good as i really have no idea) getting a good forward coach would be "handy" but having the right cattle to work with is a massive factor as we all know -

Jack Watts is learning and is no where near ready

LJ hasn't been available

Pettard was looking good but went down

Morton has just come back

Aussie Not ready fitness wise

Brad Green could do with another 2 off him!

Sylvia has hardly fired (excepet his first game back)

Bate has been hit and miss mainly due too fitness and injury

Miller and Newton are not in our long term plans

Martin tried and failed

So really what do they have too work with??

Rivers is worth a punt IMO as his form in the backline has been average at best!

Dunn can also come in coming off an 8 goal game, i like his endeavor but not sure he his in our best 22 going forward, hope he prooves me wrong

Would be great if Jack Watts was anything like Matthew Lloyd as a player or we wanted him to be.

Truth of the matter is, Lloyd is a player from a bygone era and very few play the game the way he did these days.

Even he was forced to chang his gamestyle in his final years at essendon.

He's not exactly insightful as a commentator, so I don't know what anyone believes would make him a good coach, let alone a good coach to teach Watts.

I am completely against the suggestion that Josh Mahoney isn't a good forward coach based on the 'logic' that he wasn't a superstar player. I like Josh as a coach, he impressed me when he presented at Before the Bounce earlier in the year.

However, I certainly see the place for a specialist tall forwards coach. We may well already have such a person, I just don't know. Perhaps it's a question someone could ask Schwabby on Twitter. We certainly have a specialist rucks coach, which makes obvious sense as neither Scott West nor Mark Williams could be expected to have expertise playing the position of ruck. I think the same logic could be reasonably applied to coaching tall forwards without being any kind of slight on Josh Mahoney's abilities.

This is an entirely valid question to be asking. Mahony may be an excellent coach, but he was never a star forward, and I'm sure there are aspects of this art that he will struggle to get across to players like Jack and Liam. It may not even be a matter of getting in a specialist coach for these guys so much as asking former players to come in and chat with them. Perhaps have Lyon or Schwartz sit down one on one with the player and the match tape and do a review of how they worked as a forward? This would not eat into their media commitments and could be of enormous value to the players having that insight from some very good players on how they could have done things just a little bit better.

The premise of my thread was, "Is Josh Mahoney the best person to teach and develop Jack Watts how to play as a key tall forward?"

I am sure he is a good assistant coach/forward coach whatever he does, but does Jack need someone that has played the position as a key forward successfully and who knows the inns and outs of the role?

I just think we need someone down at the club as a specialist coach, such as a Lloyd, Lyon, Brereton, Carey, etc guiding him and coaching him how to play the position.

Playing CHF is a hell of a lot different to playing HF.

And i didn't start this thread because i am impatient as to where Jack is at with his development. On the contrary, I am very happy as to where he is at the moment, I just want the best resources to be at his disposal to maximise his potential, as his output in the future will be critical for the success of our club.

Jack needs the best people coaching him. I'm just not convinced this is the case at present.

As for the main question, what Nasher said. You've no idea what Mahoney is like as a coach and there is no obvious correlation between being a great key forward and being able to coach. All your OP does is display a lack of patience.

I'm not foolish enough to presume I know any better than the football dept...

But if it was up to me, I'd go for an honest trier, someone who throughout their time as a player had to bust their gut and use footy smarts and guile to get every ounce they could out of themselves, in spite of their physical limitations.

This attitude and knowledge, coupled with the athleticism and skillset of a player like Watts would produce a champion.

So, in summary, I'd go for a coach like... Josh Mahoney.

Which is why everyone needs to stop questioning his attitude. The kid has a very good head on his shoulders and understands exactly where his game is right now. That being said, I still think the OP has a good point and he could benefit from some one-on-one time with a really good forward to learn a few of the tricks of the trade.

Give insight and advice from a perspective that neither Mahony nor O'Donnell possess. It's that simple. And it doesn't need to be another specialist coach. As I said earlier, even getting someone to sit down with him once a week and go through the game would be of huge benefit (while not costing the earth).
