Sean Charles was awsome when up and going. Physically strong and fast. Not afraid of anybody.

Think he suffered from osteoporosis, which resulted in multiple breakages of the wrist. Nasty. Bloody brave to play on with that arm guard with us then Carlton a year later.

Sean and Jeff Farmer were tandem teamed at full forward by Balme for some time, working from the square. A dismal failure.

I think I recall a final against Carlton where Sean Charles destroyed them almost single handed, he then repeated the dose a year later.

Reckon that Sean Charles also kicked 18 goals for a Sunraysia representative team a few years back. Not bad for an old man.

Interesting bit of info on Charles, as a kid he was a very, very quick sprinter and his old man desperately wanted him to forget his footballing career and concentrate on athletics, as he thought he rigors of it would ruin his body.

Guess he was right sadly.

I have wondered for over 40 years what had happened to Glen Swann, mainly because I saw him play just one game but it was one of the most impressive I have ever seen (was it his debut?). Have asked around and checked the web over the years but no luck - great to see discussion of him and others on this message board.

As David Cordner was described previously, Swann was also a "blue blood blonder hair 6'4" adonis", whom I saw play at the MCG in 1973 and boot 8 goals. Moreover, I recall a number of them being torpedoes from 60-70 yards from near the boundary. Quite tall for those days and wonderfully fast and agile and a strong mark plus a monster kick. I assumed he must have gone off to the bush because there seemed no limit to his potential but perhaps he did just fizzle out.

Did anyone else witness his golden day at the 'G and those torps?

As I mentioned elsewhere , I recall this talented young man following up his 8 goals with the Dees by taking 8 wickets a week or two later as an opening bowler with the Melbourne district cricket first eleven.

Welcome bigbob and I remember Swann as well but it was about 33 years ago not 40 when he made his debut. Very tall and the opposition worked him out very quickly so he became ineffective very quickly.

Another flash in the pan from about 40 years ago was Ed Burston who kicked six goals one week and was dropped the next.

Yeah, Ben Beams is a top little fella. He once "defended my honour" when I was a young lass out on the turps one night, taking on a guy who was about 5 times his size..so I'll always be eternally grateful to him for that! Always friendly , he drinks at our local.

BTW, he wasn't a 5 minute wonder, but does anyone know what Pete Vardy is up to these days?

Brocky has more than adequately filled the void for me now that Pete's gone but I do miss him still..

Shaun Smith, Sean Wight, Rod Grinter, Marcus Seecamp, Andrew Obst were all 100 game AFL footballers or thereabouts...hardly five minute wonders.

Allen Jakovich was one of the most talented footballers I have seen at MFC and played over 4 seasons..Hardly a five minute wonder.

The other players in this thread are 5 minute wonders...some not worth 5 seconds.

The MFC has been littered with them over the past 40 years.

By the way, a vignette in mind was the day the tank-like "Diamond Jim" Tillbrook steamed top speed out of full back at the 'G with only Alex Jesualenko standing flat footed in the way about 30 metres out from goal. "Diamond Jim" put the ball under his arm to run through him, but at the last moment Jezza did the cutest of side-steps like a matador, stealing the footy, leaving big Jim careening on his football-less way. Alas, the comedy continued when Jezza, under no pressure, missed the easy shot at goal. Another classic moment - would be nice if someone could make a video collection of these (or perhaps they have?).

That bloke came over from SA with the biggest reputation (off memory) but failed at all 3 clubs - Kangaroos, Melbourne and Collingwood.

Played for the Dees in our 2 worst years of recent memory - 1996 & 97. (or was it just 97?)

Pyman was just another poor recruit of the mid-late 90's in the mould of Nick Pesch, Nick Carter, Darren O'Brien (who at least tried) and some Williams bloke from Adelaide who kicked about 18 goals in 1 game for Noble Park last year.

Brent Williams is a terrifically gifted sportsman who basically couldn't give a f##k. Pretty sure he comes from down Keysborough way. If we'd been able to harness his talent we would have had a real player.

Was watching from the fence behind the goals one game and Cordner took a strong grab right in front of us.
He got belted 3 times in the face while being dragged to the ground.
Still held the ball out in front of him and didn't retaliate at all.
I was amazed both at what he copped and his resigned reaction.
Was always gonna be a tough career if you put up with that every week.

David Hone was No 21 at MFC and at the point where his footy career started to take shape sort to continue his post grad studies in England. I seem to recall a knee injury somewhere involved.

David Williams did an ACL and was out of footy year. Got delisted by MFC and got drafted by Richmond. Apparently hated it there. Cant blame him. I thought he ended up playing and coaching in the Shepparton leagues.

For shooting stars, I recall MFC played a schoolboy in the 1970's called Des O'Dwyer. They had big wraps on him. Gave him one game as 16yo for a taster. Never made the grade. I think MFC website had a story on him.

When I looked at the Top 40, I realised that the real talent was starting to thin for the last couple of players and I thought how many one minute wonders did we have.

Ed was one of my school teachers, he had more going on than just footy and it wasn't worth it to him at the time, wasn't dropped for performance.

I think that was our flash-in-the-pan win v Hawthorn in '66. Alas we couldn't repeat the effort.

I can't see the reference to Darren Cuthbertson .. he had a couple of explosive games .

I was a big 'ology fan. I was on the old version of DL but definitely cut my online forum teeth on 'Ology. Being in my teens at the time and hardly any MFC friends it was like Xmas had come when I found all these like minded fans in the same place!
