Garland is a capable defender who can play on smalls and talls, has good pace and drive and is part of an effective defence.

Given we are grooming Watts and we will have Jurrah back soon why would we weaken a strong area for us?

So RR --where would you play Rivers?

Just out of interest, what were the official statistics for forward 50 entries by both sides and how many marks did each side take in their own forward 50 and in their defensive 50?

Where would you find these stats?

This debate is quite interesting. Melbourne had 47 inside 50s to the Eagles' 59 and 5 marks inside 50 to 16. Probably could mount the argument both ways about the performance of the forwards but to me it was a reflection of the poor delivery the mids were providing on the day.

Interestingly, it was the same inside 50 count as we had against the Roos, with the Hawthorn game (44) the only one worse - seems to support RR's view IMO.

Also, I seem to recall Garland started his career at Melbourne as a forward but never really looked comfortable in the side until he shifted to defence. Not sure that I see him as the shotgun solution to our short term forward set-up that some believe.

Damn it. I keep missing this. Where have you heard it? I remember reading that Garland himself said he's been told he's a defender, and that's that.

I have spoken with DB personally on a number of occasions about Garland. That's where he has stated it.
