Leigh Matthews is an old fool

Sorry if this post may seem a waste and going over old ground in and amongst other topics but, I cannot contain having a dedicated post to a senile old man like Leigh Matthews and showing my disdain for his unwarranted comments re Jack Watts.

As he did in his playing days he is now commentating using cheap shops: His critique of JW's potential on 3AW last Saturday was utter garbage and seemed to me to be almost a crusade of his after he made similar comments on JW during the Essendon game last year. (JW's second game I will add!)

Even a glass half empty pessimist such as Pat Smith was able to comment on similarities between Jack and James Hird - the similarities being JW's ground level efforts and athleticism.

Surely Leigh could see this. Maybe there is something behind Leigh's comments - he has made similar cheap shots towards the Dees and our glory days of the 50's/60's by saying that the team played so often at 'The G' that premierships were a logical conclusion. This is utter tripe at it's best....his own powerful Lions were propped up by the AFL to achieve their success (the only difference between Melb Storm and Bris Lions being that the AFL was aware and authorised the extra payments.

Maybe he is embarrassed by his decision to get Trav to Brisbane in exchange for the pick that delivered Jack Grimes......maybe this post has gone on long enough to allow me to say:

Thanks for Jack Grimes, Leigh and lets talk again in 12-18 mths and see if Jack Watts is a struggling rookie type at best!

Jack will be very good. It is just going to take time. He's smart, he's got clean hands and he's big!

I think what he's saying is correct, but I think most are taking the literal too precise. He's not a fool, so I tried to think what he may mean, & I think he's saying that normally someone like a Jack Watts wouldn't play in power teams until they're ready to stamp their authority on a game & grab it by the scruff of the neck.

I believe he's trying to put the mustard on both Jack & on the Dees footy dept, inferring that he's not yet ready to play AFL footy.

In essence he's right, but i believe because we are doing such a comprehensive rebuild,,, we have No one else any better to hold down those spots. So we are lowering the standards, at least temporarily.

I think you are being far too kind to Leigh Matthews dee-luded.

I'm no fan of Lethal, but seriously, his comments should be taken with a grain of salt.

Hopefully it spurs young Jack on.

He's nothing like Sheedy........Sheedy is senile......Lethal has just expressed an opinion we don't like......I don't think he was grandstanding, just offering his opinion.

Huh, very good, how did you do that. :o

But seriously, how can you agree with Leigh Matthews calling Jack Watts a dud?

Why, do you think he hates melbourne or something? I don't think he does.

I doubt that he hates Melbourne, but I do think he has lost a fair bit of the the 'plot' since joining the media. Listen closely to his commentary....... he says some very odd things at times. Maybe he's just grand-standing.

Lethal doesn't have a clue, and will gradually be eating his words. In JW's second game he made the assessment "he hasn't shown anything to warrant pick 1" and now 12 months on,and 5-8 kg heavier, JW's has a less impressive game in my opinion and all of a sudden "he will be a good player eventually".

Mathews has lost all perspective on player development, and would never give Watts the respect he deserves unless he debuted looking like a 20 yr old Barry Hall (built like a brick [censored] house), otherwise he is no "child prodigy"...

There not the words he used, what he said is that he cant see that the boy is playing like a No 1 Pick from the National Draft. And I'm sure that's right, but the club has been holding him back for the advantage of both.

So I think Matthews is having a go at us on many levels, but really I think he sees this new thing coming into the AFL where clubs bottom out extensively,,, to harvest the draft then make a rush for the top 6..... That's what's happening Now, a lot,,, & will continue.

I believer he sees this,, & is concerned by it, & probably doesn't like the concept. And we probably all agree that it needs to be tweaked.

So, I think he's saying Jack should not be playing seniors yet, or,,, should be going as hard at it as he can like it's a mans game. Jacks still very much a boy, that's OK, he'll grow & Mature.

Also I'm reading that he may disapprove of the new wave idea of List Management.

And I think he's having a little crack @ the Dees for doing such. This would also include other teams we know of like Carlton, W/C, & others to lesser extents over the last 10 years.

The sooner the AFL put the first 8 picks into a hat as a lottery, the better.

When Matthews played it was normal for reserve players at Hawthorn to spend 2 years or more in their reserves before they had built their bodies & games to a point where they could come in and play a hard brand of football from the start. This would have helped them maintain that clubs ruthless, 'take no prisoners', aura about them.

We are currently developing our kids through the top league, which means we're not in contention for the top 8, in reality,,, & this helps us practice & harvest the draft at the same time.

The downside of this, would be that this has the effect of diluting the very competition itself, while we mature as a club. Then when we start to climb, others will do as we have done, diluting the standard of the competition.

So, in a way I understand that this would be frustrating to the legends of our game, the ones who can see (visualize) this occurring.

Insightful post dee-luded. Well done. If Matthews disapproves of the "wave" list management (ie harvesting picks) and the AFL wants an even competition, I'd like him to put forward as to how things should be done in his opinion, instead of taking pot shots.

I think you are reading too much into matthews comments, the lions had a extra million in there cap, now you would think there flags are much more tainted then bottoming out.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
