Sorry to correct you but we can shuffle the 25 anyway we want until 5pm Friday when we have to finalise,we did this a couple of times last year, I think Robbo went in or out and he wasn't even named in the original 25 on one occasion. Hence why I said think Bennel will end up as an emergency, and think Goodwin may not appear for the Crows

This topic has been covered a lot on Demonland in recent years. I'm quite sure that only the extended bench gets shuffled after the initial release. If you've got real examples (specific ones, not "this happened a few times last year") I'd like to see them. BRFE is quite right.

I can't give specific examples last year was last year, have a vague memory one involved Robbo that's all, we have named 25 players, when the game starts the 4 on the bench won't necessarily be sitting there, I think you can even change the extended bench until 5pm Friday

From the AFL website

"Melbourne, Adelaide, the Western Bulldogs, Hawthorn, Fremantle and the Geelong Cats will name their final sides (22 plus three emergencies) from 5pm AEST on Friday"

Note the word final

That doesn't tell us anything at all about the matter at hand.

It amazes me the amount of people that do not understand the following:

1. If you are named in the starting 18 you are not an emergency. The emergencies will come from those players named on the extended bench.

2. If in the starting 18 Scully is named in the ruck it does not mean he will play there. The starting positions have absolutely no relevance on the game itself.

3. If a player on the extended bench is named in the Casey starting 18 it has absolutely no relevance,.

Agree with all of that.

Why do young blokes need a good 4 to 5 games to show something?

Well plenty have in the past. The point is arguable about what is the better method. Kreuzer and Natanui were not earning their spots early on performance alone. They were showing glimpses at best. and they were 'talls' expected to take longer. They played heaps of games to get them used to AFL. The rewards came after a while. Natanui early was dreadful but they kept playing him.

i don't mind Strauss leaving for Garland but would hate to think we play someone like Bartram, who is not getting better and a woeful kick at times ahead of Strauss.

anyway, genrally we are playing the youngsters so that is good overall.

Didn't Paris Hilton tap that?

Paris Hilton has tapped EVERYTHING. "The fish stop moving when she walks into the room".. Eddie Murphy classic.

Maybe this can be a sticky to every week when the teams are named.

I'd also like to add:

4. If a first-gamer is named on an extended bench, he WILL play. They never get a kid's hopes up like that then lave him out of the side.

It just doesn't happen. Ever.

That's just general selection etiquette rather than a hard and fast rule, but true just the same.

Gyberts was named in either round 1 or 2 in the extended bench. He NEVER got a game.

Garland will not play,IMO.McKenzie,Jones,Newton, Bate will be the interchange with CHENEY the stiff one here.I think Cheney should be permantly in the starting 18.

When was that?

If so, that is the first time I have ever seen it happen.

I know that he was name as an emergency in one of the first games, but they were played on a Saturday when typically there is no extended bench.

That is reserved for Sunday and the extremely rare Monday games.

I stand corrected, it was an emergency. My apologies.

That's ok, I was just shocked that the theory had been disproved!

I've not yet seen it happen.

True.

The other three are more pertinent as people always question them.

Have we all checked the MFC site in the last half an hour, Bailey quoted as saying that Sylvia is still no certainty to play, my point about blowing smoke.......

Posted

my point about blowing smoke.......

No, your point was that the final cuts from the squad could come from anywhere in the squad, not just the extended interchange. Which is still just as wrong as it was before. When the final teams are named in about half an hour's time, Sylvia's name will certainly be in it.

Sylvia withdrawing from the on the side on the day and to be replaced by one of the emergencies (what these articles are referring to) is a completely separate issue.

Jordan Roughhead for the doggies last week was on the extended bench and ended up an emergency when the Sunday lists were finalised..and will probably happen again this weekend

Posted

It sounds to me like a theory that hasn't been based on fact but more of a general vibe.

Now Schmidt (albeit not for his debut) was even promoted to the senior list but is on the emergency list, though he still may come in. Jordan Roughead was named on the extended bench and is now an emergency. Taylor Duryea for the Hawks also in the same boat. And now Fyfe. There goes the theory.

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
