Dirtiest Player in AFL history (not VFL Days)

Hi 45. I don't recall the Free incident. Can you elaborate? In light of Wonnajurrah's initial post to identify the dirtiest player in the AFL and considering all the replies so far I would vote for Dermie as the dirtiest in the AFL history closely followed by Wallis. What weighs in his favor is that in the earlier years acts of extreme violence were still acceptable unlike in todays game. And he featured prominently in many.

im fairly sure that dermie round housed T free a few yrs back and put him out for a few weeks, i cant remember if he broke his jaw but it was low act considering the size difference.

Dermie did the same thing to Rayden Tallis (sp?) didn't he?

Yeah, it was when he was playing for Sydney or Collingwood, can't remember which.

The thing with Robbie Muir was that it was generally provoked. He didn't go out to hurt people, they got in his ear (which was his biggest weakness!) and then look out!

I still debate that Grinter was a sniper. He was hard and tough, that's not dirty. The amount of times I saw Gary Hocking kick players was disgusting. Dustin Fletcher is not far different either. That's why I don't believe Byron was a dirty player, just a hard nut that loved the hip and shoulder. If you think big hip and shoulder's are dirty, you've obviously never played a game!

I was at that St Kilda game too when Bazza went off. The incident that sent him in to that rage was when Bazza was at the bottom of a pack, and Steven Febey walked past him and "accidentally" kneed him in the head. There were other incidents before this, but this was the one when I jumped up and started throwing hay-makers! Now, Steven Febey was not a dirty player, but it was pretty clear what his intentions were when he was walking past.

Thanks 45 for your reply. To Billy, going back to Grinter I still consider him one of my favorite all time players despite some of the things he did. Like Leigh Mathews and Dermie he could dish it out but cop it also. For several seasons he was a marked man and many opposition players tried to take him out severely and failed. If they did hit him he always bounced up quickly and I never seen him down for the count. Thats why they called him "Balls". I always had the impression the Dee's played much better when he was on the field. He never lost his cool or acted like an idiot either. He was not imposing physically, quite average in size but he had enormous hands just like bear paws. Not surprising his specialty was the big round house spoil. If it missed the ball it did real damage.

There have been some feral players over the years but what Jim O'Dea did to John Greening was the worst incident i have seen in Football

The usual suspects have already been mentioned but you guys are a little hard on Mathews on ONE incident (Neville Bruns)

The guy was the first real tank ruck rover and was as Lou Richards declared Lethal

He had many victims with his style of play and he took as good as he gave

Mathews wasnt a big man but he put the fear of god into most opponents when a collision was inevitable

2 of the best examples were in Sate Games when he tackled Barrie Robran (ended his career that day) and Barry Cable

Ricky Mclean was no angel either

Dermott Brereton.

Watched a replay of a Melbourne - Hawthorn game the other night and he was clearly sniping behind play, even raking his studs over

Graeme Yeats at one point while Yeater was face down in the mud.

Very good player Brereton but dirty as they come.

also the pies reserve player who was suspended for 10 years for taking out south players, umpire, ref and a spectator. Its on youtube

Think his name was Bourke

He simply didnt agree with the umpires decision so pushed the unmpire over because he was in his face then some hero in the crowd gave him verbal and Bourke jumped the fence and belted him

was pretty funny at the time especially the reaction of Slug Jordan in the commemtary box

It wasnt dirty he just lost the plot

Raminaskas for me also, Long is another

What? raminaskas? there are so many more dirty players even in that team. How many times did you see Soloman line someone up? or Barnard? or Hardwick? much worse than Raminaskas. geez, neil balm, grinter, lee matthews, locket? Ramma must of done something to annoy you

Already mentioned but Libba for sure, I think he eye gouged one of the Febey boys severely once.

I think Milburn should get a mention, if only for the Silvani hit, but he doesn't mind giving it as often as possible.

Mick Martyn also...... rough bugger

Also Juddy claims to be fair but eye gouging or "pressure pointing" in a final never looks good.

Michael Long, 2000 Grand Final. Ask Troy Simmons.

And I can't believe no-one has mentioned Robbie Muir. Seem to recall he played something like 66 games and was suspended for a total of 22.

Sorry - just saw R Muir was mentioned earlier - 1st by Hell Bent.

    GAMEDAY: Rd 16 vs Brisbane

It's Game Day and the Dees are deep in the heart of enemy territory as they take on the Lions in Brisbane under the Friday Night Lights at the Gabba. Will the Demon finally be awakened and the season get back on track or will they meekly be sacrificed like lambs to the slaughter?

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

GAMEDAY: Rd 15 vs North Melbourne

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.
