Jack Watts

Is Jack Watts playing this weekend?

ย

Spoke to him last wednesday. Back is fine. His quad is recovering well. Only a slight strain. Could play this week but more likely next week for a half.

Surely after the Jurrah injury, they'll fast-track his development and throw him to the wolves by round 2 or 3.

Bailey wants to put 40-50 games into these kids, so we can't hide Watts forever.

Lets toss the baby out with the bath water.

Why should an injury to Jurrah compromise the development plans for another young player? Nuts.

Watts role and development path was never dependent upon the fitness of Jurrah.

Its not a matter of hiding Watts at all.

That is why we still have the likes of Miller on the list and Newton on the rookie so we can give development time to the likes of Watts and Jurrah. The MFC has been very deliberate about how it approaches player recuiting and development over the last 2 seasons I doubt they would change it over 1 injury...

Can Jack Watts now be referred to with the sobriquet 223?

?

I get it, but... not feeling it.

Watts development should be pushed ahead not because of Jurruh but because we haven't developed any real forwards for the past 5 years.

Do we even have a game next week? I thought this was the last prac-match? Or are you talking Scorps? Man, if he's only playing half for Scorps we won't see him for a few rounds...

He won't play round 1 and the club won't play him against Collingwood but expect to see him round 3 against the Crows or latest Round 4 against the Tigers, not a bad run for him to play Tigers, Lions, North,Bulldogs, WCE, Port

How do you supose we fast track his development?

It would be Detrimental to his future to try such a thing. We want a 10year player not a beaten up under confident 21year old.

The loss of Jurruh and our lack of forwards are the same thing.

If you put it that way, hows he going to cope at casey?

A little overdramatic. Only one way to develop, that is week by week.

Fast tracking his development or letting him develop at his own pace at casey/AFL are two very diffrent things.

The FD will play Watts when he's ready. Him being ready has nothing to do with any other player. You've got to try to remember that in essence this is his first year and his first preseason. It's also been interrupted through careful management of injury. Both watts and the FD are getting used to his body and what it can handle. Watts needs 2 full preseason's at least. Expect some form in the second half of next year. I know, a full 18 months to wait, shocking isn't it.

Ohh Yeah-throw him to the wolves at AFL Level while his bones are still growing.

Glad you don't work for the Footy Dept. "Good Things take Time"

But.. but... by then he'll be almost 20!

How can he not already be dominating the AFL by that age?!

If I worked for the Footy Department, and Watts wasn't ready, I'd have made some plans to fix our forward line prior to this season without him in the picture. Why didn't we recruit a forward? I can accept that Watts isn't ready, but when are any players ever ready. Surely, he can't be the only 19 year old whose bones are still growing that can't play.

I'm sure you'd have done a lot of things if you worked for our footy dept, but thankfully your short-sightedness is kept well away.

Why didn't we recruit a forward..?

See my signature. Simple.

You can't fix a forwardline instantly, generally it takes 4 or 5 years to develop a good key forward. Also, there's no point in recruiting a 'not quite right' key forward at the expense of a much better player in the draft just for the sake of recruiting a key forward, that's poor drafting. The only other thing the club may have done differently is to target a mature player in a trade, but this would be a waste for us as we're 3 or 4 seasons away from properly challenging.

Since CAC's 2nd last week year in charge of recruiting we've gone about it the right way for our future.

Easy throw away line.

Since you are willing to put yourself in the shoes of the footy dept, please outline exactly how you would have fixed our forward line for 2010 including the names of players you would have recruited and at whose expense.

I don't believe they will fast track Watts. Ifs his fit they'll play him. Ifs he's underdone, they'll rest him. They will not jeopardize burning him out. Jurrahs injury will not have anything to do with it. I'm not sold on we should have pick up a forward with our PS Draft, just NOT JD. Jurrahs Injury does however give players such as Newton (Aarrhhhh), Martin, Dunn, Jetta, Maric, Fitzpatrick, MacNamara can cement a spot in the side. I think Dunn will be used as Jurrahs replacement, Its about time he stepped up. Anybody think Garland? Sometimes injuries bring players out of the woods when they get they opportunity to shine, with exception to Newton :), My two cents.

Go Dees :) :) :)

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterdayโ€™s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown andย  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
