We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

Re-invent Brad Miller as a defender ...

Brad Miller just hasn't cut it as a key forward. He doesn't have the necessary attacking smarts or goal sense.

What he does have is strength, athleticism and a good leap and he likes to run bull-at-a-gate in straight lines and give off handballs to runners.

I reckon they should try him down back in 2010, either at CHB on the more mobile types like Robert Murphy or as another tall option on the last line of defence.

If they continue to persist with him as a forward he'll playing twos most of the year and will be one of the first cut at the end of 2010.

They should take a gamble and re-invent him as an attacking backman. If it comes off he could hold down a spot there for another 5 years or so.

Opinions?

Yeah, cos we definitely have a dearth of quality players to play in defence, but way too much quality in the forward line.

Your logic is flawed.

God No!

Miller is a very good third tall. We have just forced him to play CHF and FF which is not his role. He is a much better forward than backman as he has proved time and time again. I am also not sure who would push him out of his team. I think he adds far more than people give him credit for. His only real crime is he is not a Jonathan Brown.

In any case even if he had not proven a better forward than backman moving Miller to the backline would make no sense. Our tall backs are great. In fact our third and fourth best back men (Rivers and Garland) are better than the 2nd best at most clubs. With Harley's retirement, Geelong would take either of these players at CHB. Who do the bulldogs have who is better than either of these (harris excluded). How about Collingwood (?) Presti? The list goes on. Our backline will be excellent in a few years, all it needs is a couple of small defensive running players with great skills like a Macleod or a mackie who can do stuff coming out of the backline.

Miller needs to stay forward playing the role of third or fourth tall and then he will be very good value.

You might rate them as 'quality players' but I'm not yet sold on Warnock or Garland. Those two in particular will have to produce the goods in 2010 and it wouldn't hurt to have a player like Miller putting pressure on them at the selection table.

Offer up some of your own logic before being so quick to dismiss other's ideas.

Miller doesn't put pressure on anyone at the selection table.

Its gotten to the point where he is little more than a depth player.

Warnock is the first chosen in the backline and Garland, when fit, has shown he is a gun.

That backline is so stacked that we have the option of playing Garland as a forward.

Go back to the drawing board...

I don't know which games of Miller you're referring to there. Time and time again you reckon he's proved himself up forward?

Surely you're kidding ...

Bad Call!

Been tried before and failed.

The only way to re-invent himself is bring back the aggression he showed in his 1st 2 years as a half forward. He was a feared player and he knew it. It was great to watch. Sadly, after a few suspensions he was told to pull his head in and curb that aggression.

Unleash him. I`d love to see it again. To be perfectly honest if he gets suspended again, we can more than cover him now.

Fair enough that you think that but I'm still not convinced, particularly about Warnock. Think about the past few premiership sides' full backs - Scarlett, Croad, Glass. He's got a lot to prove to be considered of that quality.

Throw Miller down there and see what happens. It's worth a gamble.

It has been tried. Daniher did it to death. Miller mis-read the ball, got beaten in too many one on ones and panicked occasionally underpressure. The last experiment of Miller down back nearly finished Miller's career. He got three brownlow votes once because of his job on Hall but it was more that the Dee's won and someone had to get them and so they went to Miller. From memory Hall kicked 2 goals & 4 behinds if it had been 6 goals straight Hall would have got the brownlow votes.

Points of need aside (my views on our backline are above), I agree with shifting Miller down back, as a big strong body could work in theory but he has played down back and it just did not work. Warnock for such a big man occasionally loses one on one contests due to strength, miller surprisingly was far worst.

hahahahahaha you don't think Warnock is as good as Croad?

Wow.

Late entry for thread of the year :D

The point of the thread is to suggest a back line role for Miller.

The guy is dead weight up forward and frankly a liability in that position.

I believe he can play a role in defence, whatever cheap shots you want to throw my way.

no offence to miller, but he is dead weight were ever he plays, hes played in defence, it didnt work, hes played forward, and kicked 1.2 goals a game, if he was on the crows list he would have been delisted 3yrs ago, your beating a deadhorse, hes a jumper and hes finished nxt season.

I can't see Murphy playing in the VFL. He should be tried down back at Casey as long as he never plays a game for Melbourne again. Giving Miller a one year contract is every bit a stupid as the contracts they gave to Newton and Meeson, surely the Gold Coast couldn't be that stupid and take him off our hands at the end of next year.

The only defensive players roles that he could play is Warnocks and Frawleys and to think he is even close to either of those two is laughable. You are so adamant that he is dead weight up forward where we have no key options of any maturity. Yet you want to find him a position in our defence where we have so many quality options they will struggle to all get games next year. Here's an idea if he doesn't warrant a game in his legitimate position as a forward why dont we play him at Casey until injury or form forces us to play him.

Next thread, Re-inventing Newton as a Ruckman...

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
