obviously i like the look of strauss (hence my name) but what does everyone else think, i reckon he will be used on the half back flank (thats were he played for vic metro in 08) he is a really good kick and could provied good run off half back

His kicking is MUCH better than really good

As far as the rest of his ability its far too early to call

I am really glad the MFC is starting to realise the importance of recruiting kids who can kick

Jurrah is another who threads a needle consistantly

he will be so much better on the mcg. His game style isn't suited to the scrappy style of the vfl. His kicking is so mint that he can't not be good. He will prove his worth when he gets his chance. I'm more worried about Maric. I rate him very highly but he hasn't kicked on at all

Maric was recruited as a small crumbing forward who knows where the goals are

I wouldnt be too worried that Maric hasnt turned into Steven Milne yet

With the expected improvement of the midfield expect far more forward 50 oppurtunities in future

The kiss of death. Everybody put your money on Maric to win most improved.

Strauss will be good. One query I have about him is that he seems a bit indecisive at times, kind of like a stutter step and a panic under high pressure situations. Hopefully that has been ironed out, but yes, he has all the skills and athletic qualities to be a top line flanker/midfielder. Lethal right boot.

Strauss will be good, injury and not finding enough of it are his only concern. Both can and will be fixed.

A couple of passages of play at Casey involving him just shone amongst the rubbish being played around him. His foot skills are all they're talked up to be, hits targets at top speed too.

As the game moves towards giving the ball to the best users, him finding the footy isn't going to be a problem. Would love to see both he and Davey getting the cheap handballs and delivering to wanting [censored] all over the field.

I thought he showed enough? Why is everyone on his back suddenly? He was injured this year.

I have to be honest, I was hoping that we'd get Swift with the pick we used on Strauss. Towards the end of the year Swift started to show what he's capable of, the kid is going to be a very good player. It sucks watching him run around with the Eagles when we could have picked him instead, but the club decided to go with Strauss, so I reluctantly trust their judgement.

As already mentioned Strauss has great disposal and is really strong, hopefully he'll be a regular player in the future. Would fit in very nicely on a HBF once he gets over his injuries.

The next 6mths are important for the development of players like Strauss and Maric. Staying fit through the preseason period is important for all players but more so for younger players. They get fitter and stronger, play some preseason games and get confidence that they can make it at AFL level. Lets hope for both Strauss and Maric that they can stay fit and healthy for 12 mths so this time next year we will have a better understanding of there ability.

i expect every player taken top 20 in a draft to be at least a very good player, if not a great player or an out and out star. James was recruited and praised at the time for his foot skills, so i'm really looking forwards to his debut, along with Blease and the upcoming draftees.

I was hoping the club picked him up along with Blease last year, so I was pretty happy when the club drafted them both. I watched a game in the VFL last season where Casey played at Williamstown, really liked what I saw of him including a 60 meter bomb for goal. He's struggled with knee and shoulder injuries this year from what I've been told/heard, so I think once he has a full pre-season where he can stay fit we will see a fair bit more of his potential. I see him as a half back flanker that can rotate through the middle if needed. He has a pretty good aerobic capacity also so this should allow him to be utilized as a mid when needed.

The only doubts I have on him are his handballing decisions in close. The reason I say this is, last year I watched him in a practice match at Casey and he coughed it up under pressure a couple of times across half back by hand. I'm pretty sure that was due to the speed of the game and him getting used to the pace of AFL level and the fact that as a young bloke your always learning to try and take the right option. Overall I think he will come good provided he gets a clear run with injuries and that he continues to learn more about the inside side of his game. Hopefully he will play 150 games plus in the red n blue.

But would he beat Freak in a beep test?

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi
