about time a few of you agreed with me .Yes trade mclean immediately and ensure that valenti stays on the list .I beleive he is our best mid fielder and if the club decides to let him go then watch him turn into the next darren jolly

That's exactly what you would be doing if you traded him.

He's had 1 ordinary year, there are a lot more players on the list that have more than 1 ordinary year and are still at the club.

He had no pre season and played like he was injured for the majority of the year. If he plays like this next year then it's time to consider a trade.

He has had half of one good season in the last 3 years.... this year and last were nothing seasons for him and the year before he put in half a good year....

That's the sort of bloke that makes me proud to be a Dees supproter. Blokes who bleed for the club are vital to the fabric of the place. In all seriousness, McLean and Jones are currently our two best on-ballers. Now admittedly, given our current midfield stocks, that's not saying very much, but it's a fact that should be acknowledged before entertaining a trade. Some of the suggestions here have been way off; while it's great to see Moloney have an uninterrupted season, the fact remains that he is not as good as either of these two, and is in a slightly different mold as a footballer in any case. Valenti is not even in the same league, and will be off our list before long.

The fact that our two best midfielders are good honest toilers, rather than genuine gamebreakers, accounts for part of the reason we're currently sitting on the bottom of the ladder. We desperately need class in the midfield, but I tend to believe that this situation can drastically improve without aggressive trading: we will pick up the two best midfielders in the draft this year, and we seem to have an abundance of good, emerging players with class and/or pace who can at least pinch-hit, if not play full time in the midfield in future (Davey, Blease, Strauss, Maric, Wonna, Sylvia, Jetta, just to name a few).

While I don't think this thread is entirely without merit (another top 10 pick would certainly be handy), I believe that trading either McLean or Jones at this stage would be a mistake, as they'll be very important players in a few years time. When Watts, Morton, Scully, etc are hitting their straps (provided they turn out as good as we hope), other sides won't be able to afford them the same amount of attention anymore, and they will provide our better players with first use of the ball time and time again. They will be in their mid-20s by this stage, and will be senior players in a very young team. They will be at the physical peak of their careers and they'll be downright intimidating to play against.

Alot of people are blinded by the fact that McLean and Jones aren't going to be the superstars we once hoped they might be, and blind to the fact that, FFS, both are under 24.

Unless you think McLean is going to decline I don't know why you would trade now, when his trade value is at its lowest.

Not that I'm particularly keen to offload either of them at this stage, but Moloney and Jones would give you more bang for buck at the trading table.

I think Moloney's value would be quite high after a return to some sort of fitness and a consistent year, while Jones is the type of player that another Club might feel has potential untapped by Melbourne.

I doubt we'd get enough to look at trading any of them though.

Keep him. Trading him would be a step backwards in our list. We're trying to improve the list. I agree with Rogue, considering trading him now when his value would be at it's lowest would be a bad move.

Agree with Two Sheds post with regard to the addition of two quality midfielders to the list and the reminder that the likes of Brock and Jones for that matter are both under 24.

when i hear people say that borck mclean is goin to be the next melbourne captain i cringe.... i dont think he is up to afl football...i reckon we should look at trading him and pick 18 for a first round pick becasue the afl world is hyping him up then we may be able to get a good deal for him

I'm not convinced that he's the next captain, but not up to AFL? Pfft.

As had been said, set him amongst some quality running players and a bit more support in the middle, he could star. He definately has the ability and the determination, his only issue is his body letting him down.

What he does, when not on half a leg, is get to contest after contest after contest turning them into 50-50 deals rater than yet another easy entry into our defence, or another failed thrust forward, when many other players simply wouldn't be able to will themselves there. There is a very good chance he'll return to the high quality we saw a couple of years ago before injury started limiting him. I.e. multiple BOGs in a season, the occassional real matchwinner, and no failures because he will always keep on going and going.

I agree with your sentiment but those two are not our best two onballers.

Davey and Moloney are, as of this minute, our best two onballers.

Moloney is one you could argue but Davey is one of the best wingers in the game.

He is our only star.

In all reality Brock is probably safe this year. However if he dosnt light up the mifdield with serious effect next year then I for one wouldnt lose a moments sleep should he be offered as trade.

I really dont understand why some consider anyone of limits. If a trade to our 'betterment' can be had ..then you consider it on its merits.

Brock is amongst a band of merry warriors for the red and blue who quite frankly have a way to living up to their potential and expectations of the club and its followers. He has played some great games.. but like a couple of his teammates is struggling of seasons late to sting them all together and consistently impact games.

I would like him to , and I cant beleive I am saying this.. but to apply himslef with as much vigour at realising himself as his fellow draft pick in Sylvia. Brock is supposedly regarded ( by some ) as elite. Currently, hes good without being brilliant. If he remains so this time next year then Id be prepared to allow another team to gamble on realising his brilliance.
