Casey in the Finals

Now that Casey are assured of finishing 5th or 6th in the finals the question will be which Melbourne based plyers will be available and eligable to play for them come finals time to hopefully secure some silver wear? Off the top of my head the players I came up with that may be available and eligable are:

Buckley

Bartram

Miller???

Dunn

Cheney

Newton (if fit)

McNamara

Jetta???

Bail (if fit)

Spencer

Bennell???

Valenti

Whelan (if fit)

Jurrah

McKenzie

Not sure if I've missed anyone, and also not sure on whether Miller, Jetta or Bennell have played enough games to qualify, also will be waiting on fitness of Newton, Bail & Whelan.

Anyone know if I've missed anyone or if any of the above wont be able to make a finals appearance?

Not sure who is eligible entirely, but I know one thing. Having seen Casey play a few games (mostly on ABC;thankyou) ;) I cannot help but be impressed with how German and his players have played - even when undermanned (few Mfc players). casey will give the VFL Premiership a real shake. We could not have wished for a better start to the Mfc-Casey Scorpions alignment. Well done to all concerned. Most of all well done to Peter German and his ever changing line up of men. Good win over Willy too!

AFL listed players need 7 games in total at VFL level (senior and/or reserves) to qualify. I make the list as follows (injured/unavailable =  *):

Rohan Bail *,

Simon Buckley *,

Kyle Cheney,

Rhys Healey *,

Danny Hughes *,

Liam Jurrah,

Jordie McKenzie,

Tom McNamara,

Michael Newton *,

Jake Spencer,

Shane Valenti,

Jack Watts *,

Paul Wheatley,

Matthew Whelan * and

Trent Zomer.

One game more required to qualify:-

Clint Bartram *, Lynden Dunn * and Russell Robertson (since Robbo is playing his farewell game on Sunday, he won't qualify).

The sad part of it all is that with so many qualified players injured or unavailable, a number of players will miss out on an opportunity to play finals football with a successful club which is an experience our younger players have yet to get. Some of them could have gained a lot of benefit from that.

Thanks for that KC, much appreciated. Best of luck to Casey, I think they have a real shot at going all the way even with several injuries. Appology to Trent Zomer as I forgot him from my initial list.

It's a shame many of them are injured, but at the same time, with the club looking at beginning pre-season training in early October, it would be a massive workload for these guys to play in a finals campaign potentially to the last week in September, then have only approx. 6 weeks off before they're into their pre-season...

I believe Dunn will play for Casey this week, and in the finals, as he was "rested" last game... Watts will be concentrating on school, will be interesting to see how LJ is holding up, and whether they want to put him through more football, or let him rest before pre-season...

I have heard a rumour that Melbourne players won't be allowed to play in Casey finals in case they get injured. Not a good start for an alignment.

Surely that wouldn't be the case, wouldn't make for a good start to the alignment, and we never did that with Sandringham.

There are least 5 players in the eligible stakes that are up for delisting this year.

If they get injured while playing for Casey, MFC could be up for half their salary each in medical expenses.

And I am sure some poster will say "Surely they could let the ones they are going to keep next year, play on"

The issue is dont risk it.

Surely the AFL could arrange some form of insurance policy to cover such an eventuality?

Not playing qualified players in finals is an insult to your alignment partner. What if they turned around next year and decided to develop their own home grown players and select their AFL players in the reserves? It's been done interstate.

Why is Watts unavailable?

Being wrapped in cotton wool so he'll be ready for the pre-season. Decided he could concentrate on his studies after his broken finger. A shame though, would have been great experience for him.

That would most certainly not be a good start for the alignment. there would be some very palpable anger down at Casey Fields if MFC decided that its players couldn't be risked in a VFL final. Apart form getting some good intense matches into the younger players (albeit not AFL matches), surely the players would prefer to play footy finals (particularly as the AFL team finished last) rather than be prima donnas and saying they can't play because the pre-season is just around the corner.

The pre-season just around the corner at CASEY FIELDS. You know - the ground of the Casey Scorpions.

The rumour had better be wrong or there'll be many miffed people at the Scorps.

i agree with both sides of the coin here. and really, once the afl clubs season is over the players should be 'released' with the rest of their pay (for the last month or so) forwarded to them, allowing them to keep playing finals without the risk to the club.

have just read local casey newspaper, and casey officials are not happy with melb. reg. players not playing with casey. very poor decision M.F.C. they wany a local supporter base, this is not the way to do it.

Poor form by the club if true. If we have players available, they should be playing for Casey IMO. Period.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
