THE POWER TO WIN (not really)

THE POWER TO WIN by JVM

I heard on the news last night that "football champion Jim Stynes has told his closest friends that doctors have declared his second cancer operation a success". It was great hearing those words read out by veteran television newsreader Peter Hitchener but even the uninformed observer is aware that the club's leader has a long road to travel before he can successfully complete his recovery.

And just as we Demon fans have learned to be patient with our football team, we will patiently wait for our Jim's return to full health. The Melbourne community and indeed, the whole football world, is right behind our Jim Stynes – an inspiration for our club.

Last week Jim's boys did him proud with an emotion charged win over the West Coast Eagles. However, as coach Dean Bailey made clear, you can't rely on emotion every week and you need to be self-motivated to win every time you go out to play.

That's what makes this week's game such a challenge for the Demons who need to find the power to win again.

LAST TIME THEY MET Port Adelaide 22.15.147 defeated Melbourne 14.6.90 Round 3 2009 at AAMI Stadium

Melbourne enhanced its reputation as a poor traveller by serving up yet another innocuous performance at AAMI Stadium when it went down by 57 points to the Power.

The Demons were competitive in the first quarter but it was downhill all the way from there and only a fighting final term prevented a total massacre. Aaron Davey, Cameron Bruce and Cale Morton were Melbourne's beat while Brad Green kicked 3 goals.

The day belonged to Port Adelaide's Warren Tredrea who showed he was not a spent force as a tall forward with his strong marking and six goals. Daniel Motlop was also prominent converting three majors.

This Sunday's MCG match is between two teams that last week put an end to their own recent horror stretches by winning games they were expected to lose. Before those wins, both Melbourne and Port Adelaide were becoming punching bags fit only for running opposition teams into form, so how does one preview this game between such unreliable combinations?

On the face of it, the fact that Port Adelaide is currently in 9th place and only out of the top 8 on percentage, should determine the issue. The opportunity to play off in a finals series and the rewards that this brings should be incentive enough. On the other hand, Melbourne has little to play for but to salvage some pride wounded after a series of under whelming performances.

But it's not that simple. Port Adelaide might have beaten the Brisbane Lions last week and it might have thrashed Melbourne earlier in the season, but the Power has of late only been able to produce their best at AAMI Stadium. Their record away from home this year is a miserable 1 win from 7 matches - a record identical to their overall tally against Melbourne on the MCG.

It's true that Port Adelaide doesn't perform well at the home of football. Mark Williams' team might have won a premiership on that hallowed turf but it's recent form there has been miserable. Who could ever forget the 2007 grand final and the 119-point touch up delivered to them by the Cats that day? Earlier that year, they beat an undermanned Demons for the first and only time at the G and that was only with more than a grain of luck and a last minute goal from Daniel Motlop.

Motlop won't be at the MCG on Sunday and Chad Cornes, who always seems to be in the way of the Demons and victory whenever they meet Port Adelaide, will be playing his first game for several weeks. And while the Power have ruck veterans Dean Brogan and Brendon Lade, Melbourne has another South Australian in Mark Jamar in top form. Last week his strong play in that division turned the game to his team's advantage. The young Demons have the confidence and the momentum and determined to show they're on a roll.

These things are enough for me to believe the Demons will really make the football world sit up and take notice on Sunday afternoon to make it two in a row.

Melbourne by 15 points

We wiil win...

...if Sylvia, Woneamirri, Garland and Scully come in to the team.

Port by 23.

Port are a different team now their coaching issue has been more or less resolved. The only way we can win is if Choco spits the dummy about the behavioural clauses in his contract before the game. If they don't win this game, they're stuffed as a football club. In fact, we will cause serious damage to anybody we beat this year except for Freo (oh god please let us beat Carlton!) We might go close though.

Heart says win, head says lose. My first game for a while though, so i'm looking forward to it.

I've been thinking about this all week. On the one hand it would be absolutley fantastic to win 2 in a row (first time since round 10-11 2007) and to destory an opponents finals hopes. Plus I know we have un-winnable games V Geelong and Sydney coming up week.

On the other hand I can't help but think we still have Freo and Richmond on hand.

Your thoughts guys!

Cheering followed by singing, followed by victory doughnuts, follwed by the scared fact that if we then beat freo and the tigers bye bye scully.

"over the moon"....singing hugging clapping and a glass ( or 2 ) in the hassett Room.....now I'm getting excited thinking about it.

.....It's a grand old flag, it's a high flying flag......................................it's the emblem of,the team we love. It's the team of the red and the blue...........everyheart....PLEASE JOIN IN !!!!!!

Beating Williams, Treadrea and Cornes and making it a little harder for them to finish in the eight......delicious.

Then we can be "competitive" for the rest of the season.

Dismay !!

Only safe to win games when its mathematically sound. Yep call me one of those people if you wish but theres far more to lose than to gain by winning at the wrong time.

I'd be thinking: -

Port are a weak bunch of insipid, pathetic footballers.

But I would be happy for our boys and would be wrapped to hear the song again.

No more than 4 boys.

We won't beat both Richmond and Freo. We might not even beat one of them. I seriously think we have a better chance of beating Port than any of our remaining games. They are not an MCG team (nor is Freo, but they always play well against us on the G)

You are either underestimating us, or overestimating Rich and Freo.

If we beat PA, we will not get the PP. Simple as that.

HT is right.

It would be a bittersweet victory. I would enjoy it, but driving home, I would realise what it means.

Much excitement, and happiness. 24 hours later i may feel a bit worried about the possibility of losing pick 1, but i haven't witnessed a victory this year, and i can't remember the last time i followed the Dees and didn't see a win for the whole season!

I'd be thinking: -

Port are a weak bunch of insipid, pathetic footballers.

They've been embarrassing in their losses so surely they must make a stand and stomp the bottom of the table side.

I'm pretty confident that we'll lose but I reckon Dean Bailey should come and say Port Adelaide are the most weak minded, pathetic flat track bullies in the AFL.

He actually should do that for 8 rounds.

Total bug-eyed disbelief - it just won't happen. Port have way too much to play for. The only way we could win is if Choco does a dummy-spit on Sunday morning about some of the behavioural clauses in his new contract, which I don't think he's signed yet.

I'd prefer to leave the option open for our fourth win to be against Carlton in the second-last game, which would wreck their entire season. Then an honourable loss to the Saints in a high-scoring game the week after, and look forward to the 2010 preseason with all our current youngsters fit and with Scully & either Morabito or Rohan on board.

I would be thinking "No other club would shoot themselves in the foot like this."

I'm hoping Green, Bruce, McDonald and Grimes are all late withdrawals with the flu.

Of course all Melbourne fc supporters would be rapt but if we win kiss Tom Scully bye bye not to mention another waste of a year.

Delighted. 2 wins in a row, and I ABSOLUTELY HATE THAT FOOTBALL CLUB, CANNOT STAND ONE PERSON THERE!!!!! PORT POWER MY ARSE!!

Dismay- i want Scully at our club. HE"S A GUN

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.

The Demons are finally back at the MCG and finally back on the winners list as they continually chipped away at a spirited Kangaroos side eventually breaking their backs and opening the floodgates to run out winners by 6 goals.
