Grooming Brock?

Something that I've noticed, particularly over the last few weeks is how Brock seems to be involved with everything promoting MFC. The main one I'm thinking of is Macca and Brock in the Members email this week (standing side by side). Could it be that the club has decided on its next captain? It's almost a forgone conclusion that this will be Macca's last season, so perhaps the club are taking the early steps in this process? What does everyone else think?

That "tough initiation" was a media beat-up. Mclean said that they were doing some boxing training, jack had his left hand up and Mclean was practising his left hand jabs. Mclean's jab hit Watts' hand, which was knocked back into his face causing him a blood nose. nothing in it.

I think Mclean has all the attributes to be a captain. Loves the club, has clear leadership skills and leadership aspirations. He is a role model on the training track as well which is important....... the ONLY concern, and it is a major one....... i'm not sure whether he is good enough a player to be captain.

Anyone who gets 8 clearances against the Hawks and then backs it up against the Saints with another 8 is a very good player.

A captain needn't be the best player - only someone in a position to affect a game and his teammates.

He is not our dynamic inside/outside midfielder that can run the lines and go forward and kick a goal. And that's OK, we will find one somewhere else. I'm looking in the direction of Maric, Petterd, Bennell, Wonaeamirri, Buckley, Jones, or perhaps someone in the next draft?

Yep, he won't be quick enough to be the Judd type. But as long as we have got a Blease, Buckley, Davey running past him receiving the quick hand ball he wont have to be. The problem at the moment is that Jones and Moloney are similar pace. We need 1 or 2 quicker inside mids on the list.

He will be captain next year. the only other options are Bruce and Green.

You dont have to be the best player to be captain at all. Have a look at Kirk from Sydney, he was held in very high regard but wasn't quick or flashy but he did the team things better than anyone.

And yes, Brock seems to be popping up everywhere. In all the hullaballoo of new recruits and Jack debuting, we have neglected the captaincy announcement issue. Well picked up...

Brock has never been quick, but this year he looks particularly slow. His disposal has also gone downhill, I think he is actually a very good kick going inside 50 but this year he has had the oportunity a few times and turned it over. The encourraging thing is that he still finds the hard ball so he will always be an asset. I also think the return of a more mature Jamar will allow him a bit more freedom when the ball hits the deck in a ruck contest.

Definately a captain next year, and the timing is good if we start to improve. The interesting one for me is Vice captain, not an important role by any stretch, but still interesting.

The thing about Brock is, his game is built on determination. When things get a bit hair-raising and the pressure is on, he'll maintain his level while others on both teams start to fluctuate.

He also works very hard to get to contest after contest after contest - the number of times Brock Mclean is there, turning what would otherwise be a two on one into a two on two, or an easy run and bounce for the other side into a hard one, it's truly impressive. He doesn't win every contest like magic, but because of Brock Mclean in any given week there's an extra dozen contests that our opponents have to work through.

The work ethic, determination and calmness will be priceless in big games, for a taste we only need to look back on the Elimination Final against St Kilda.

Mine too. I have no doubt Brock has leadership capabilities, but his pace and disposal worry me.

Except I'd never have Maxwell has my captain. He might do the team things occasionally, but you also need someone who can turn a game, when you're down and out. Maxwell couldn't do that. Brock might be able to do that. As I've said all along, Brock will come into his own, if he has some quick players around him to hand off too (ie Davey, Morton and maybe Scully). He must improve his disposal though, otherwise he's got the potential to kill us with turnovers.

Mclean plays every game like its his last. I think it`s pretty obvious that he`s gonna be our choice for Captain next year or the year after and I`m sure he can become an elite inside Midfielder. And Colin Sylvia is finally starting to step up to. I`m telling ya we have got a team here. In the DVD it`s a grand old flag (150 years of the MFC) after the speech from Bails. Mclean is saying "Inspire your team mates through your actions", and when they are doing 4 stared handball Mclean is demanding the ball. I can see the determination in his eyes. He will have to success as a AFL footballer, (with his determination). He might not be a match winner but he will sometimes and he will always be giving 100% week in week out.
