No complaints at this stage - still think there may be more upside to Morton than Rioli, but both will be excellent players.

Sydney might be a little unhappy about their choice, but there is a fair bit of drafting for needs between our pick at 4 and Hawthorn at 12 - particularly Essendon and St Kilda.

It's premature to ask whether we took the right picks because players develop at different rates depending on their draft age. But purely based on performance to date, here's who I'd rate as having a greater impact than the Melbourne players:

Morton - Rioli, Palmer, Taylor.

Grimes - Taylor, Otten, Whitecross

Maric - Pears, Otten, Whitecross

I think you'd be happy drafting either of these two.

From our perspective already having Flash and subsequently recruiting Aussie and Maric our stock of quality crumbing forwards is pretty good.

I wouldn't be happy with Palmer at all - he can't hit a target.

The initial hype will fade and he'll be seen as an also-ran from that draft

There's about 15 players there i'd take first

I think that we picked the right ones. Morton will have far more impact on games than Rioli in the long run; Grimes is a little beauty; Maric is a work in progress and the only one thus far that has not fully confirmed his status.

In a word, No. Happy with Cale. Despite Rioli's brilliance. Might want to re-visit this in 3-4 years time. They play diffrerent positions.

TBH I'm happy to have Morton with the likes of Davey, Bennell at present, if we didn't have a Davey, Bennell, Jetta and/or Wonaeamirri, you might have got a different response, because of a need for a speedy small forward such as Rioli.

Very happy with Grimes so far. So far haven't seen anything to suggest otherwise for Maric either.

Who would you have drafted? Selwood may be?

Exactly. Once (if) he develops as expected, his precision delivery will be invaluable. Well, handy at least.

No, what I meant was I'd perhaps only swap Maric for Rioli if the draft had been different. I certainly wouldn't swap Morton, he'll be a superstar and as for Grimes he could be anything. I have faith in our drafting of the past 2 years, we've drafted only what we've absolutely needed, rather than average midfielders, one after the other, or rejects from other clubs. We've really stuck to our youth policy, which provides me with great confidence.

In reality you can only look at guys after Maric. However I believe no matter what you draft the best kid, and not what you need at the time. you can build a team around a super star over time (Not that the D's have had a super star for ages). Like the 2000 draft at 16 we took Scott Thompson (now gone), and we missed D Kerr at 18. And in the 2001 draft we took Luke Molan at 9 and missed N. Del santo at 13. But them's the breaks.

It is just interesting to see what may have been! <_<

So far, very very happy with our picks. Morton's scope for development is out of sight. At the very worst we'll just get a "good" footballer. The best case scenario is stuff of dreams; better than anything Rioli could deliver IMO, and there's no doubting Rioli is a very, very good player.

Grimes seems to have been an absolute bargain at 14 as well.

It's unlikely the Swans will be unhappy with taking Veszpremi. He's going to be a very, very good player for them. Injuries have cruelled his output thus far, but wait until he gets fit again.

And my top five choices from that draft would be:

1. Cotchin

daylight

2. Morton

3. Rioli

4. Kreuzer

5. Palmer

I would've said daylight after Rioli, but you're not too far off.

Cotchin will be a gem

Rioli - match winner, premiership and is the most skillful player in todays game. Possible All-Australian as early as this year.

Can't see how anyone would consider putting anyone else above him

Agree. I don't buy the argument that Morton has more upside than Rioli simply because he's taller and physically undeveloped. If Morton becomes a match winner with great defensive qualities, which is where Rioli is at, I'd be rapt.

Agree with all that.

Both look like being outstanding players.

I dont think that argument has been expressed at all in this thread. Nothing to buy there.

Can't say I have any issues with who we drafted. You could say Rioli is the better player of the lot right now, hard to disagree at this stage, maybe Cotchin, but there's many years to come to determine this argument. Morton is the type we needed and will ultimately be an elite player. Grimes was a solid selection at 14, the guy is going to be something. And as for Maric, can't question this selection either. Who would you rather have taken? I think Maric is going to be a real talent once he gets a few games into him. He kicked two goals last week, but he set up or was directly involved in another three with a couple of sweet handballs and one little touch kick. After that Geelong horror game he had, he has done nothing but show great promise.

I'll stick with our choices anyday.

Ablett????

lol, are you joking? Ablett isn't close to being one of the most skillful players in the comp. He has an ability to break tackles, but his footskills are not even close to rioli's. Ablett is simply good because his body shape is impossible to tackle.

Most skilfull players in my opinion are

1.Rioli

2. Steve Johnson

3. Daniel Motlop

All have done things Ablett simply cant do. The reason Ablett is the 2nd best player in the comp (behind franklin..best KP is always better than the best midfielder) is because he has a greater work rate, a stronger body, and a better team around him.

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.

    THE HUNTER by The Oracle

Something struck me as I sat on the couch watching the tragedy of North Melbourne’s attempt to beat Collingwood unfold on Sunday afternoon at the MCG.    It was three quarter time, the scoreboard had the Pies on 12.7.79, a respectable 63.16% in terms of goal kicking ratio. Meanwhile, the Roos’ 18.2.110 was off the charts at 90.00% shooting accuracy. I was thinking at the same time of Melbourne’s final score only six days before, a woeful 6.15.51 or 28.57% against Collingwood’s 14.5.89

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t
