I was prepared to bet another poster here a notable contribution to MFC if Meesen were to continue on his existing contract at year end. And I dont like to give easy money away. B)

He has been carrying the stress fracture since late last season... hence not playing in the pre season.

He is shattered.

There are varying degrees of injuries. While it is a stress fracture now it may have been a lesser injury before. He could have aggravated it against Geelong.

there is no lesser stress fracture, it either is or isn't, running on it everyday would have told him something was wrong......I have had one in the foot, and it is like you have a large stone in your shoe, it is very uncomfortable, it doesn't get any worse....and it doesn't get any better.........hence Garland felt discomfort straight away and reported it....agree with the poster either Meesen lied to the staff or he has only just done it........seems to be jumping ok in the ruck for somebody with a stress fracture in the foot for a while....head back in

there is no lesser stress fracture, it either is or isn't, running on it everyday would have told him something was wrong.

I believe MRI's can pick up hot spots which are a hard sign for developing stress fractures.

I would be absolutely amazed he had not been scanned previously. I would be even more amazed if he continued to play with medical staffs blessing if there was any signs of stress fractures developing.

That is a completely differernt scenario, Richo, would assume if we was tied to treatment table you would see him trying to untangle it from the banner as he ran on the field.......this post is now a few hours old and nothing on the MFC site.....it is not a weekend and I am sure they have a few board readers......they would confirm if true to stop all this

Yeah, I had a hotspot show up over the site of an old break in the Tibia years back as I was getting pretty fit & considering playing footy again.

Sad to loose Meesen, as people have said he had showed real promise in 4 games, he looked like he had the potential to become an elite Ruckman.

I'd rather keep Martin down back and give Spencer a go (if avalible). I thought Spencer looked great and was unlucky to be out of the team, and it'll give him a good go at rucking.

He did a full pre season, so that is tripe for a start, and you cant play with a stress fracture for so long, it gets too sore, ask Colin Garland or Mathew Egan.....especially when you carrying 100Kgs on it...

not true at all, i nursed my way through a season with grade 2 stress fractures in one shin from about round 4-5. it is hard to train, and there is a lot of pain but it can be done.

I would say that if it is, he was gone even before the injury.

He is still very young for a ruckman, so if the club believes he is worth persisting with, they will keep him on. Stress fractures, while they take a while to heal, are not untreatable.

Given that he is contracted until the end of 2010, I can't see the club paying out his contract and delisting him. For one, we can't afford to do that, and secondly the competition for his position is about as weak as it gets. Spencer is nowhere near ready, PJ is not a ruckman, and Jamar is... well... Jamar.

We can delist him, and try to pluck another ruckman in the draft, but very few, if any, are ready to ruck at AFL level within a year of being drafted, so having Meesen there for another year as back-up at least, seems reasonable.

The worst thing that could happen IMO, is if we run out of ruckmen, and end up having to play someone like Martin in that position, and he gets injured because he is inexperienced and doesn't know when/how to jump correctly.

I'd be interested to know the contract status of PJ and Jamar. If either are out of contract, they may be gone before Meesen.

Lets hope Spencer comes good, because our ruck stocks are horrendous.

Agree. Which is sad because a lot of people on here have been saying 'Can't wait till Jamar's back'. The media trumpets him as being our 'no. 1 ruck', which makes him sound a lot better than he actually is.

Meesen hopefully will be right for next year. IMO he's done more than enough to take Jamar's spot on the list.

He is a beanpole with no experience.

I think he has a huge amount of potential, but he needs a lot of time at VFL level before he is anywhere near ready for a serious rucking role.

Very few can step into that role first year in. It is the most specialised position on the ground, which requires a lot of perfecting. You let someone ruck who hasn't had the previous experience (and I'm pretty sure Spencer is not from an AFL background) and you risk serious injury... not to mention a lot of frees being paid against you.

If Meesen is indeed injured, then PJ goes into Number One Ruck mode until Jamar is fit, and Spencer becomes the backup.

I actually thought in the first two rounds Spencer gave us more in the centre than PJ did. I would have the order the other way because PJ is apparently one of the best 2nd rucks in the AFL. B)

Me too, though that may be a reflection on PJ's crapness in those first 3 rounds than Spencer's ability. Nonetheless, from what I saw of Spencer I think there's talent there that could well work out for us.

He is 203cm of awkwardness, and he was dropped from the senior team for a reason.

Let this take nothing away from the best 2nd ruckman in the AFL, who might well be the worst 1st ruckman
